While Ravenna is famous for the glimmering gold mosaics of the Byzantine era, the Mausoleum of Theodoric offers something completely different: raw, heavy, limestone power. Built around 520 AD by Theodoric the Great, King of the Ostrogoths, this UNESCO World Heritage site is a unique blend of Roman and Barbarian architectural styles.
On the upper floor, you will find a simple, dark red porphyry tub. This was Theodoric's sarcophagus. It is hauntingly empty (his remains were scattered during the Byzantine reconquest), but it serves as a powerful connection to the "Barbarian" king who ruled Italy.
