Art and Culture in Beijing

"There are only a couple destinations around the world where one can see an embalmed former head of state; Beijing is one of them. Other personality cult leaders that have been preserved include Lenin in Moscow, Ho Chi Minh in Hanoi, and two “supreme leaders” from the Kim dynasty in Pyongyang, North Korea. The specter of this controversial historical figure can still be spotted in modern China, with his classic portrait photo hung high in restaurants and shops. The Great Helmsman left an indelible impression on the People’s Republic; the story of his own life is also a fascinating reflection of China’s vicissitudes over the past century. Remember that when visiting the mausoleum, sandals or other less-presentable clothing may get you turned away. Also, you must bring a passport and check any bags at a nearby locker. The line will be long, but it moves quickly. No one is allowed to linger as people stream past the crystal coffin." - MATADOR_NETWORK

The palace is very spacious with multiple layers of tight security, to get to the palace you have to walk around ±3 km, and don't forget to bring drinking water.

A lot of security and don't dare make a noise or try to take pics inside (understandably). You walk past him in a line and have to keep moving so you can only see him for about 30 seconds, then it's over.

Note google map is NOT accurate in China. Just passing by. Have no idea how to buy the tickets. It looks closed though. It is still a very important to the people of China, an icon.

This is a very popular place for local Chinese to visit, so you'd better be prepared for a long queue. Obviously of huge importance to the Chinese, but I'm not sure how much value tourists will get from visiting.

For Curiosities only. Impressive structure. Go for a visit. Like all things in China, go early! Early as in 15 to 20 minutes prior to opening Early. Make sure you visit this place carrying the lightest load possible. Otherwise you'll have to check your backpack in somewhere. They will not let you take photos inside and will keep the line moving. Try not to be alarmed if people start weeping when they see Mao. Photos are from the entrance and exit.

Very long queue, better to get there very early. You cannot take pictures inside and it is a very emotional place for Chinese people.

A very short walk through the building, past the body of Mao. You can't take pictures inside, or dawdle, they will make you keep moving. Queue starts on the east side. Before joining the queue, make sure you deposit your bags at a building just across the road on the east side of Tiananmen Square.

One advice: Wake up early and go early. I arrived at 06:50 and 90 minutes later, the line was at least more 60 minutes. In the end, I decided to leave the visit to another opportunity in the future.
