Tortuguero is an amazing place. It's remote. It's jungle. It's wild. Mawamba is in the heart of it. The staff are very friendly and courteous. The trips into the jungle on boats open up incredible opportunities to see the amazing wildlife. The food is good. Nicely presented and wholesome. Good pool and nice bar. It's not 5 star, it's in the middle of the jungle! But it's good. I've read some reviews which make my teeth itch, complaints of the wildlife is too noisy and can be heard from the bedroom! Crackers! It's the jungle!!!!! The monkeys and teeming wildlife won't be quiet for tourists strangely enough..... It's a bit of a chore getting there, the transfer place where you get on a boat to get there is "rustic", it's a bit of a shack and a grind to get your bags on the boat through some mud, but it's the jungle!!! Really, what do you expect. Any discomfort is absolutely worth it for what awaits. I've seen comments where people are unkind in their comments of Tortuguero town. Do it. Spend a bit of money there. Let the locals benefit from tourism to help them preserve their paradise. Its not a western city. It's a little town in the jungle. People there seemed happy, school kids rode their bikes to school, tourists were welcomed, they recycle their waste right there. We could learn a thing or two...... And then there's the opportunity to watch majestic turtles laying eggs on the beach with rangers protecting them in what felt like a well managed, unobtrusive way. Wonderful experience! In summary, Mawamba isn't the Ritz. It's a great place in a remote part of heaven. It's welcoming. The staff work hard. The wildlife is incredible. Its a bit of a challenge to get there, but could it be easy to get to somewhere remote!? Ignore the negative comments about mid and noisy animals, let them stay somewhere artificial. If you're up for some family friendly jungle adventure, get to Mawamba!!!!!

This lodge provides a luxury experience on the edge of the wilderness. It is only accessible via a one hour boat ride (arranged by the hotel). Once you get there, the property had beautifully maintained grounds, including a very nice swimming pool. The rooms are not air conditioned (which we were concerned about), but the ceiling fan was adequate to keep our room comfortable for sleeping. The lodge provides several opportunities to travel on the nearby waterways for wildlife and bird watching. The guides are excellent. The restaurant is very good. We had a very enjoyable experience.

Great hotel to stay in Tortuguero. Seen a lot of animals around the hotel. Arrived with Smith from La PAVONA which was all very well organized. Rooms are good. Food is good as well. Staff is friendly. Swimming pool is nice. I believe one of the best places in the area

Ok, so it's rustic. You've seen the photos, I think you know what you are getting here, and that's why you're going. You probably like wildlife. Well, there's wildlife. Your room won't be sterile. It's made of wood and not exactly airtight. I personally liked it and it felt like an adventure. Great birds on site, huge oropendular nest site. green macaws etc. lizards, spiders etc. Activities offered are great fun. Did the turtle watching tour which was very exciting taking a boat in the night with the lights off zooming down the river. Bit hit and miss in July but we saw a turtle laying. Trip the day before people didn't. Restaurant does a limited menu but is very nice especially the fish dishes. Staff are all very nice ( saw some reviews that said they were not.. strange but then I'm European so maybe my expectations are lower.... *cough* realistic ??!). I feel this place might keep growing in numbers until it's ruined, but until then, get it while it's good!

We stayed here for two nights, the whole area of Tortuguero is absolutely stunning and full of wildlife and the hotel grounds are no different. The town is a 15 minute walk or short water taxi trip away. The rooms are lodge style with no AC or WiFi, although there is WiFi in the common areas and the rooms have ceiling fans which were enough to keep us comfortable. The rooms have no glazed windows but instead just have fine netting to keep the bugs out, while this does help with air flow at night there in nothing stopping all of the sounds of the jungle, which for us meant we were awake very early. Having said that, early mornings are great for tours, we did a 0530 kayak tour which was excellent. Breakfast and dinner at the hotel restaurant were of reasonable quality, but dinner prices are very expensive. We found the reception desk often unstaffed which wasn’t ideal, when staff were there they were very helpful. Staff can arrange for the public ferry to stop at the hotel as well as water taxis, these are a great way of seeing the area without splashing out on expensive tours, we caught the ferry to Cerro and back. The hotel provides a free shuttle on request from the airport, if you want this be sure to arrange it in advance as I was waiting a few days for a response. Finally a lovely touch is the hotel has a beach clean station where you can take a bucket on your walk to collect plastic waste from the beach.

Such a unique experience - beautiful setting only accessible by plane or boat and the canal trip there and back is full of fab flora and fauna to see.|The rooms themselves are pretty basic with no air con but not sure what people expect given where Mwamba is! Wasn’t a problem for us.|We found the staff friendly and helpful and the guides really informative on the tours we did. |Food in the restaurant was also good, albeit the same menu each night.|But the whole experience is based on 1 night / 2 days or 2 nights / 3 days so, again, really not an issue for us.|Costa Rica is just so beautiful and Tortuguero is definitely worth a visit.

We arrived in early May. After the boat ride, we checked in at the front reception desk. There, you can pay for your roundtrip boat trip, however use cash to avoid extra cost only for the boat tickets. You can use a credit card for the rest of the final tab without fees..| |We were assigned our favorite room #36, which is the Bungalow cabin at the farthest end of the complex. |The room was quite large with screen windows, and a changing area of enormous proportions, probably due to the fact that the room did not have a bathtub but instead had a wood deck in its place. There was pump soap and a hairdryer, and a basket with extra pool towels. There is a room safe, and plenty of electrical outlets. Two wall mounted fans and a ceiling fan provided air movement. No wifi here at this distance from the reception area.||There was minimal privacy even at best with our cabin. Windows in front have privacy shutters, but in this climate most people keep them open to catch a breeze. Expect this, it’s no big deal, but you are close enough to hear your neighbor’s conversations. On occasion some hikers will pass by on their way to the jungle trail and garden of torch ginger just beyond #36. The trails loop back to the entrance and don’t connect to other properties.||We should note that during the daytime, Rooms 21-28 had some kind of mechanical humming or pump sound coming from behind them. I would have been annoyed if I were in those rooms.||We spent peaceful hours on the boat launch deck that extended into the canal in front of our unit. We watched lightning in the distance, and experienced the rocking wave of our floating deck whenever a boat motored past our area. We watched the oropendula birds fighting in the hanging nests in the trees in front of our unit. The lodge and the entire area feel far from civilization. ||Dinners at the Mawamba Lodge restaurant were quite good and not unreasonable when we got the final room bill. On our first night we had grilled tilapia in a delicious tamarind sauce, accompanied by plantain and cooked vegetables, zucchini, green beans, and carrots. All perfectly done. We split a bottle of generic French white blend wine, La Vieille Ferme. Two dinners cost $32.52, and the wine bottle was $17.88 USD. |On our second night we had grilled chicken entrees in a similar sauce as the previous night and shared dessert, $38.21. Each had an Imperial beer, $10.57 for two. All in all, better than expected in both quality and price. We had a non-alcoholic smoothie at the pool for $5.69. There is a 13% tax (I.V.A.) and mandatory service fee of 10%. Breakfasts were included with the room cost and were very good. We liked the pancakes. |While the room cost was a bit steep (2 nights, $448 + $58 tax = $506), overall it was worthwhile, a good travel experience .

A brilliant couple of days, from the moment we were picked up to the point we said goodbye we were well looked after, particularly by Eric who was our knowledgeable and enthusiastic guide on the canals. Beautiful wildlife, and even saw a green turtle nesting and returning to the sea on the night excursion. Friendly staff and guides throughout the lodge. Fabulous.|Pura vida!
