Max Fornaciari definitely knows how to produce an authentic gelato. The location is perfect for a tourist but if you're a local it might be a nightmare trying to find a parking space. Try going to the one at Trindade, Beira Mar or Itacorumbi (Mondi). Best ones are Pistacchio and Pinguim.
