Good.spot to eat. My daughter said we should try the schnitzel. It was very good! My wife had the beer chicken which was also very tasty. I also got a fresh bites of the saurbraten which was fantastic. Great service and a good old German restaurant feel and look. Definitely worth a 2nd meal there for me.

Google
The food was really good. The service was super nice and the restaurant has a very German vibe. I highly recommend this place if you wanna try real German food. Btw the explain everything about the beers and the different options. Is really nice.

Google
Its an old traditional German Pub. Excellent food and great beer. I just loved it...and the staff are super friendly...

Google
Since we had made a reservation beforehand, we were seated quickly in their warm, candle-lit atmosphere that perfectly blended tradition and charm. We ordered some classic German dishes, and everything was hearty and flavorful. The Bratwurst with spinach and potatoes was particularly delicious—well-seasoned and perfectly cooked. The portion sizes were generous, making it a great place to enjoy authentic Berlin-style cuisine. Kreuzberger Molle, the house beer served in a glass featuring Max and Moritz. The beer was smooth, refreshing, and paired beautifully with the hearty dishes. The candlelit tables, rustic wooden interiors, and lively atmosphere made the experience even more enjoyable. The restaurant had a welcoming, nostalgic charm, and it felt like stepping into a piece of Berlin’s past. The service was friendly and efficient, adding to the warm experience. If you’re looking for a place in Berlin to enjoy authentic German food in a traditional setting, Max und Moritz is an excellent choice. The delicious food, historic ambiance, and great beer make it a must-visit!

Google
Max und Moritz was amazing. The food was very good, atmosphere amazing and staff welcoming. The owner was close by and heard us toast to my mother, who passed away a few weeks ago. He came over to our table with his favorite beer liquor and toasted to my mother together with us and the shots on the house.

Google
Delicious traditional German dishes. This was recommended to us and it did not disappoint. We booked in advance and we are pleased we did as they were turning people away when we got there. The food was delicious and brilliant to experience proper German cuisine. There was a good selection of beers and wine too. This restaurant is cash only so make sure you take cash!!

Google
Unforgettable this experience! Everything 10 out of 10. Authentic German food here and the Honor is extremely welcoming and charming. He treated us like his closed friends. Definitely coming back !

Google
Enjoyed traditional dinner, healthy portions and tasty. Older, “art deco” style decoration. Very good service. Unfortunately let down by only accepting cash, luckily I had some with me (rare) - justified by trying to keep the experience authentic like they have done since 1902, that’s fine but why then are staff using electronic devices to take orders. My overall rating reduced by 1 for the lack of card acceptance but if you are ok with cash it’s a “5”. Irrespective, with cash it’s definitely worth a visit.

Yelp
I ate here with family last fall. I wanted sauerbraten. When I saw the name, I recalled the comic from my childhood. With sauerbraten on the menu, I had to try this restaurant. My wife and I had sauerbraten...every bit as good as I had hoped. Son had the veal schnitzel...also delicious. The vegetarian item looked good too. Huge portions. Reasonable pricing. Great atmosphere (though the neighborhood looks a bit run down). I will return in my next visit to Berlin. I have to try the Konigsburger Klöpse.

Yelp
The nicest hostess in Germany greeted us at the door and the rest of the evening went just as well. Lots of veterinarian dishes and I had the ravioli over spinach and a cream sauce. They actually had Bourbon which is kinda difficult to find in Germany. Other guest had a meatball dish and someone had a fish dish and a nice Rose. All in all a great meal and Berlin restaurants are much cheaper than America.
google avatar

Abby A.

Yelp
They offer English menus which is very nice. Prices higher than I wanted and cash only. In the end vibe just not right for the day and we left after two beers. Weekends may be busier so definitely could be a fun stop on weekdays.

Yelp
Food amazing. Location has old world ambience. Order everything. You will not be disappointed. The server we had, well he was not very attentive. I could understand if he or the resturant was busy, but goofing off behind the bar, in full view of our table 7 feet away, nope. Hanging amount chatting not checking drinks, how the food was, if we required anything our visit, unacceptable. We received assistance from another server while there.

Yelp
Lively traditional Berliner pub with great food and huge portions. Nice selection of beer and wine, prices are reasonable and service friendly. Great place in Berlin for hearty German fare. Cash only!

Jeanne Y.

Yelp
Ambiance what you'd expect from a restaurant that survived two world wars. Speaking of time 35 minutes for dessert to be requested after meal was cleared and arrival. Have to pay with cash. Food was good and a lot. Noise was loud in the hallway where we were sat. Still waiting for dessert. Waitress wouldn't make eye contact as she flew past us in the hallway. We were polite but damn. Ridiculous

Ron M.

Yelp
Service was awesome. Ambiance was great and the decor was authentic German. The food well it was awesome. Beer great too. The man in charge even helped us flag down a ride leaving the restaurant. Definitely want to return again!

Yelp
Great place for a noisy table of coworkers from different international offices. We entered without reservations as a party of 9 and were seated in a somewhat-back room at a large wood table. My American coworkers found good things to eat and of course my Polish and German coworkers ate comfortably. The service was friendly and boisterous. I remember the food being quite good.

Yelp
CASH ONLY and they do ask you to leave tip! If you want to experience real german food, this is the place to go. It is very loud though-- seemed like a lot of students were there. And at one point, there was live music but it was more loud than nice lol they also did come around asking to give them money. They have amazing food and beer but it was very very hard to get the servers' attention. They also did not let us in at first because we did not make a reservation. Make sure to call before you go, they all speak English very well.

Yelp
My rating is at 3.5 stars but I rounded up for good measure. We were turned onto Max & Moritz restaurant by Yelp and took a recommendation for traditional/regional food from a local (who works at a trendy, not known for great food/experience Gastropub) to go there. M & M is a old school traditional restaurant that brews their own beer and serves local and national beers on draught. The restaurant stays true to its pre-war roots with a very traditional style. The restaurant itself is very warm and a bit smoky by the bar and obviously outside at the outdoor tables. It lacked any kind of air flow and, to top it off, each table was lavished with a candle to set the ambiance and heat level higher. The interior of the restaurant is what I'd expect for a traditional German restaurant, however. M & M was bustling with large groups, both friends and family-everything from a toddler and her parents to raucous 20 and 30-something year old males slugging back liters of beer. One such male took it upon himself to play a classical piece on the piano which sounded nice but in reality the acoustics were pretty bad and the echo wasn't enjoyable. I was impressed with the size of the menu and the fact that they had a "vegetarian" section on the menu. I enjoyed seeing the Berliner section with entrees specific to Berlin. Nice, complimentary bread was served with the meals. Servers and the hostess were nice and spoke English and there was an English menu which was also appreciated. With a severe lack of German restaurants in the area (and, to my surprise, more "kepap" places than I could count), this restaurant was a welcomed find. I enjoyed my meal but the overall atmosphere left some things to be desired.

Yelp
Delicious food ! I was taken here by my friends who have lived in Berlin for a while when I asked them to take me to an authentic restaurant, I had the Berliner soup - potato, sausage and bacon. It was delicious. I shared the carnivore platter- oh my more meat then I could ever eat! I tried the Schnitzel and it was delicious! Highly recommend!

Yelp
The homemade noodles are amazing, just the thing on a cold night! The rustic interior was really cozy. We were able to get in without a reservation, but I wish we'd made one. They had a great variety of bar beverages, the food was really tasty and large portions.
google avatar

David N.

Yelp
We've been on this rustic restaurant trend while we been in Berlin. Max and Moritz follow this theme. The rustic wood interior hall full of diners. You think with all the hard surface it would be a loud space but on the contrary. It is quite pleasant. Our perky server came by the get the beer order and on the night, we were there, there was a roaming band to entertain the patrons. The English-speaking servers and menu was a great help but with modern technology it isn't a hindrance. Prices seemed reasonable. It was good German cooking. The food was very good. The spaetzle was slightly crispy and buttery and meat tender in the Goulash. I tried the Rheinischer sauerbraten (or German roast beef). It was interesting. Lots of flavor but probably I'm not big in sweet sauces with meat but that just my preference. That said it was excellent. A neighborhood restaurant that is not necessarily part the tourist path but certainly in the popular trendy neighborhood. The fun part of traveling is getting to try new food. Sometimes it pays to go beyond the confines of tourist centers to explore what a city has to offer and that's where you learn the most about a country's culture.

Yelp
FYI CASH ONLY! But worth it! The food was the best that we've had in Germany so far, and we've been here over a week! In our party of 6, every single one of us was impressed with our meals, and we all got something different! You can't go wrong here! Highly recommend!!
google avatar

Yelp
Hot as hades and not even a stir of air in the main back room. Horrible acoustics. Loud. Echoey. Is this meaty authentic Berliner cuisine? Yes. Pork foot. Sauerbraten. Goulash. Lamb stew. A couple veggie options and some salads. Large portions. Fair to slightly spendy pricing. Lots of beers being served up. A few tables outside but all occupied and full of smokers. The restaurant inside was uncomfortable in June. So hot and stuffy I was thankful when someone walked by as the air stirred. My conclusion is that yes, this is a traditional German food experience and this is also why there aren't more of this type of place. Loud boorish atmosphere in shabby hot place. I blew out the candle at our table because it was only making things worse. Who wants to dine uncomfortably? Not me. No thanks. If you're intoxicated enough you might not mind being all sweaty.

Yelp
This restaurant was suggested to me by one of the girls working at the hostel we stayed at our first night in Berlin! She said, "if you want to eat authentic German food you need to eat here." Max and Moritz truly delivers! My boyfriend and I are from California so we really wanted to be exposed to the culture and the food. Service was great and I ended up getting an apple strudel for dessert! (Pictured) definitely a must try!!!!

Yelp
Pretty good restaurant for german / berlin food. Beware that the food comes in a very hugeeee portion and tastes pretty good We got the berlin pork feet einsbein and it was humongous ... Tastes great as well Then i got the rippenspeer (small) but it was hugeee i could not finish it! Service was great. Super friendly and english is spoken (plus english menu!) They also gave you complimentary bread! But unlike what yelp says, there is no wifi.
google avatar

Bri R.

Yelp
Let me preface by saying that German food is not my favorite, but I got the spinach ravioli and it was really good! The staff is incredibly friendly and the atmosphere is fun and warm! Would recommend!!
google avatar

David T.

Yelp
If you want really authentic German food in a classic setting, this is a great choice. The food is great quality and large serves. The service was very good as well, very happy.
google avatar

Manuel C.

Yelp
I love this place. Good food, good people and good waiters. You have to try the potato soup, the local breaded fish and if you are adventurous like my friends, try the pork knuckle-see the picture. The restaurant hosts music on certain nights. They have a full bar. Great rustic look to the place. Gorgeous waitresses who know how to imbibe.
google avatar

Sofia R.

Yelp
Fantastic and absolutely lovely restaurant. The staff is phenomenal and the menu, of course is traditional and to die for
google avatar

Gabriela C.

Yelp
There was a live band, friendly staff and overall great lively atmosphere. Typical German food. It was all very yummy at a great price. I would recommend making a reservation because they looked really packed. I wasn't thrilled about the location...we couldn't find much to do around the area afterwards.
google avatar

Jennifer W.

Yelp
Excellent German food! This was the best meal my mom and I had in Berlin. The service was excellent, and the staff was friendly, personable, and funny. Make sure you make a reservation, as this is a popular restaurant, and bring cash since it's cash only!

Yelp
A vegetarian's perspective: Located in the buzzy heart of the Kreuzberg district, Max Und Moritz turned out to be one of the favourite finds of our Berlin trip. Its very much a traditional beer house, one thats been serving very hearty German food and hospitality since the beginning of last century. The whole place just oozes character and the same could be said for the staff who were universally jolly, had a great sense of humour, and were well clued up on Scottish current affairs! I was in awe of the staff's ability to converse in so many languages and resolved that I must do better with my efforts to speak German. I was so pleased to find vegetarian options on the menu that were actually labelled as such, and even had a few tips from our waiters about what was good. My meat free meal was full of cheesy noodley spaetzle goodness and well complemented by a fresh salad. The meat eaters were equally impressed and fit to burst! It almost goes without saying that the beers were excellent, it is an historic beer house after all, and we did our best to work through the beer menu sampling as many as possible. Tough job but someone has to do it! Food and drink wise, prices were pretty fair for a major city bar restaurant, and definitely cheaper than our hotel. I fell in love with Berlin and hope one day to make a return visit to Max and Moritz. Loved it!

Yelp
Wiener schnitzel and apfel strudel are an annual tradition during my annual visit to Berlin. A charming setting hosts delicious and authentic German food, but crowds mean you'll need a reservation and should plan for a relaxed dinner.
google avatar

Deidre L.

Yelp
Food was delicious but nothing to write home about; service sadly was very slow (even by European restaurant standards). I wanted to give this 3 and a half stars however, because this place offers a very rustic Berlin food experience. The beer was excellent and our bartender was thoughtful, but we were here for two and a half hours and just got one thing to eat.
google avatar

Gemma S.

Yelp
It really takes a lot to get this girl to Kreuzberg but I couldn't pass up an opportunity to try this place. Having heard such mixed reviews about Max & Moritz, I needed to try it and did... I was brought as a guest for a large group dinner and the food was the exactly same as if we had all ordered our own plates (it was serve yourself). The bread selection was pretty good and the spätzle was very authentic but other than that, I felt the rest of the food was only a bit above average. They also have a very small wine by the glass selection and although the wine I ordered was pretty good, I would have liked a few more options. I think that the place could be a little intimidating for a first timer. The decor, though, is great and the bar adds a nice touch to the front entrance. It is definitely a very original place to check out but I don't know if I would schlepp all the way to Kreuzberg for another meal there.
google avatar

Didier R.

Yelp
We really liked the menu, totally local and tasty. We went for the schnitzel with spätzle (veal with German pasta). Very good and service nice. They also serve the green and red Berliner Pils.

Alissa D.

Yelp
This was the only restaurant I got to enjoy in Berlin before breaking my ankle and living in hospital rations. It was delicious, the service was great, the interior was beautiful. I thought it might be a tourist trap for "real German food," but so many happy, lively, large groups of locals were there too, that I know it was the real deal. I ordered the smoked pork with sour kraut and potatoes. My mom has roast beef with red cabbage. Both were outstanding.
google avatar

Paola M.

Yelp
Authentic and delicious German food. We are visiting from New York City and have been a couple of days here in Berlin and definitely this is a restaurant that you have to visit. They give you big and delicious food
google avatar

Jen H.

Yelp
The restaurant is conveniently located 5-8 mins walk away from the u-bahn. I got in around 7pm on a weekday with no problem, but I do recommend making a reservation with the restaurant cause it was getting quite busy when I left. Note, they do have large table to seat big parties. The feeling of the restaurant was spacious (I sat in the back hall). The menu was also available in English, plus! If you want a traditional German food that's been around forever, this is the place!
google avatar

Olivia S.

Yelp
The food is okay at most but my biggest complaint is the service. Service is extremely slow. It literally took at least 45 mins to get the check. I actually had high expectations for Max & Moritz so I was utterly disappointed when I visited Berlin. Plus, you have to make reservations way in advance or else a walk-in wait is aroudn 2 hrs during busy dinner time...
google avatar

Amy J.

Yelp
Sometimes all you can do when it's super hot and humid is go bar hopping and eat something in a fabulous place along the way. It was a million degrees and we played hooky with a matinee and a string of snacks. The Flammkuchen mit Speck, Zwiebeln und Schinkenstreifen is not to be missed. The other entrees looked like something I would enjoy on a cooler day. Not that the day wasn't cool- it was a very cool. It's just that it was so freakin hot.

Belal M.

Yelp
Come very hungry for this restaurant because the portions are very hearty. The food was very authentic and delicious. The service was great and the waitstaff very accommodating to those who don't speak German and to the vegetarian crowd. We ordered the sauerbraten and the käsespätzle, They were both wonderful.
google avatar

Kifah A.

Yelp
This location is freakin phenomnal. If you ignore the heavy smell of smoke the minute you enter the bar, you will be taken away, to a world of old Berlin. Berlin of the swinging twenties. The walls are restored and renovated, and it must have costed a fortune to do/keep that old look. It is a great locations for special meetings or celebrations/weddings/congresses.
google avatar

Dave R.

Yelp
I took all my American visitors (and other Germans, too) to this place -- good classic Berlin food, from Kassler to Rote Grütze. The interiors and I think also the furniture are more than 100 years old. Plus, if I remember this correctly, they also sell their own beer.
google avatar

Cassie H.

Yelp
I would say this was my first "real" german meal.... Was recommended to this place by a Berlin local and I have to say I am a fan - the generous portions and heavy carbs may be a turn off to some, but to me, it was comfort food deliciousness!! For our mains, my sister and I did the old half/half switch trick - which meant I got to try two different dishes, we chose Käsespätzle a cheesey, chewy pasta that with every mouthful I was thinking about the next, as well as the Rheinischer Sauerbraten which was a braised meat with red apple cabbage and potato dumplings. The servings were HUGE! and although I was feeling full, decided to share a dessert. The three of us shared the Süßer Flammkuchen (Sweet Flambee) which was kind of like a dessert pizza/tart with apple and raisons with a shot poured over an set on fire - the flames added a bit of drama to the meal - it was quite exciting. My only negative of the meal was the shot of alcohol poured over the dessert... I get that this is how the fire is lit, but it was a little overpowering in some parts which were quite heavily soaked in alcohol. Apart from that, I would recommend this place to anyone wanting an authentic german meal in berlin!!
google avatar

Taylor H.

Yelp
This was recommended by our Sandeman Tour Guide, and I'm really glad we came. The food was wonderful and the beer tasty, and the menus had English on them. We sat on the second floor by a window and just got to relax and enjoy the district. It's pricier than we were hoping to spend, however it was certainly worth it. Everything we had was delicious: the house pickled beets and cabbage, the salads were fresh, the homemade food was incredible, everything rocked. It was very good. It's also cash only, which is a bummer, but we had the cash. All in all, I'm glad we came here, I'm happy with it.
google avatar

Ashley K.

Yelp
Food was great, very large portions. Very authentic taste and cooking methods. Great place for legitimate German food. The waitstaff was cold towards us, even though I speak German. Overall it was an enjoyable meal.
google avatar

Christina B.

Yelp
Delicious, the kitchen was a little slow but the waitress made sure to make us aware of this before we ordered. Food was well worth the 40 minute wait.
google avatar

Nathan L.

Yelp
My gf and i were in Berlin for a few days and i really wanted a hardcore, traditional German meal. We went to Max Und Moritz and i got it. Good beer selection (including in-house stuff i didn't try but i heard was good), classic atmosphere and a cheerful crowd. The food is good if you like it heavy, fatty and full of flavor. I took a plate of classic German stuff: sauerkraut, salad, potatoes and a bunch of meat. Along with a couple of beers. It was exactly what the doctor ordered. If you go, do the same. Highly recommended for touristes.
google avatar

Greg S.

Yelp
Everyone in the staff that we encountered did something to make us feel unwelcome. We should have probably just left after seeing such attitude. First, the host shook her head and stopped paying attention to us upon hearing that we didn't have a reservation. Then, a passing waiter pointed at a bottle of water in my hand and told me it was not allowed inside. Then, the waiter kept ignoring us in every possible way. She would stop by the three tables around us frequently and would just look turn her head away from us every time she would be nearby. The food was oversalted, the decor is run down and the air is stuffy and hot.
google avatar

Danielle P.

Yelp
As noted by Nathan I. this is a place for some solid German cuisine. It's quite a large place with lots of seating areas. We were a small group so we found a spot tucked away off the main hall by the big bar in the front room so we could hear each other. I can imagine the place gets a bit loud and possibly rowdy at certain points. With it's humble decor, solid wood tables and paneling I could imagine artists and intellectuals fomenting revolution over their dinners. Tango lessons and dancing are also offered on a schedule (weekends?). It's got good food, great beers on tap and is also a good place to people watch, being in Kreuzberg. Though most of us spoke German, our waiter was more than happy to speak English to the one in our party who didn't.
google avatar

Aaron I.

Yelp
Good food, but a little shady on the outside. The neighborhood isn't the best (there's a club next door, and another shady "storefront" down the street), and the place looks small from the outside. But inside there is a bar, upstairs seating for special events, and a large back dining area. Downstairs is the WC (Water Closet/bathroom). The large pork knuckle (Berliner Eisbein) was large and delicious, though the random meat platter (Witwe Bolte's Schlachteplatte) had some average sausage and a smaller pork knuckle. The apple wine (apfel wein) came in either sweet or sour, I liked the sweet better. Good sauerkraut and mustard on many of the dishes. They don't take credit cards, so bring sufficient cash.

Henry K.

Yelp
The food is good. Be aware that the portion sizes are huge. Even the small is larger than a normal entree in North America. Avoid the wine and stick with beer. As with most German restaurants, there is no A/C. On a warm evening, the inside was very hot. Shorts and sandals recommended.

Yelp
Good looking and tasting german restaurant in Berlin Kreuzberg. All the berliner traditional receipes, plus flammkuchen and other german goodies. Several beers on draft. highs: location, taste lows: it might feel a little touristic my favourite: Berliner Eisbein, flammkuchen
google avatar

Brian M.

Yelp
Highly recommended. My companion and I searched high and low for some Sauerbraten and finally found some at Max und Moritz. Very nice location inside, servers were friendly and helpful for us English mostly speakers. The Sauerbraten was excellent but my favorite had to be the Goulash.

Tony Y.

Yelp
Excellent quality. The real German food. Room is not pretentious but definitely upscale. Prices moderate. Ordered everything from Sausages to Fish with great results. Tender where it should and crisp where it needs to be. Not touristy. Cash only. English menus and spoken. Added bonus, learned about the rascals Max and Moritz who are German touchstones.
google avatar

Scott A.

Yelp
Max & Moritz cooks traditional Berlin food, serves massive portions, makes their own excellent beer, has a friendly professional staff and is a fun place to take people who want some real German food. This is not a place to take vegetarians, the menu is dominated by pork dishes, but if you are looking for authentic Berliner food this is the place.
