A Spiritual Journey to Lumbini I recently visited Lumbini, a sacred site in Nepal, and it was a truly life-changing experience. As a Buddhist, I have always been drawn to this place, and it did not disappoint. The peaceful atmosphere, the stunning architecture, and the rich history all combined to create an unforgettable experience. The Lumbini Garden, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a beautifully maintained park that houses the Ashoka Pillar, the exact spot where Buddha was born. The garden is home to numerous monasteries, temples, and stupas, each with its unique architecture and history. I was struck by the sense of community and devotion among the pilgrims and monks. The monasteries were bustling with activity, with devotees chanting, praying, and making offerings. The Lumbini Museum is also worth a visit, with its impressive collection of artifacts and exhibits showcasing the history of Buddhism. My only suggestion would be to improve the infrastructure and facilities, particularly the roads and accommodations. Overall, Lumbini is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in spirituality, history, and culture. It's a place that will leave you feeling peaceful, inspired, and connected to something greater. The Maya Devi Temple in Lumbini, Nepal, is a highly revered site, traditionally considered the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, the historical Buddha. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a major pilgrimage destination. The temple complex is an important archaeological site. Excavations have revealed remains of ancient structures, including a sixth-century BCE timber shrine, which are considered some of the earliest Buddhist shrines in South Asia. You can see the ruins of ancient monasteries and the Ashoka Pillar, erected by Emperor Ashoka in 249 BCE to mark his homage to the site. The temple is adjacent to the Puskarini (Sacred Pool), where Maya Devi is said to have bathed before giving birth and where the infant Buddha took his first bath. There is also a sacred Bodhi Tree adorned with prayer flags, often used by monks for meditation. The nearby Lumbini Museum provides valuable insights into the life of the Buddha and the evolution of Buddhist art.

Being from Rupandehi, visiting Maya Devi Temple feels very special since it is in my own district, the birthplace of Buddha. This UNESCO World Heritage site is peaceful, full of history, and many monks can be seen praying, making it a meaningful place to visit. Some signage is now blurred and there is no clear explanation of what is what. The audio guide inside the temple does not even work. It would be very helpful to add details about the pond, trees, pillars, and other historic spots, maybe in big letters so visitors can see and understand them easily. Special information for visitors: • Avoid visiting between 12 and 1 pm, as most temples are closed while the monks pray. • Wear slippers or easy-to-remove shoes, as you will be asked to remove them from temple to temple. • If you plan to visit all the 20+ temples in a day, taking a tuktuk inside the temple is recommended. The fixed price is 1050 rupees as of January 2026.(Few might charge 400rupees extra to go to peace/white pagoda <one of the temple> as its bit far) Overall, the temple is a must-visit historic site in Rupandehi. While clearer and updated signage would make the experience even better, the history, peaceful environment, and significance of the place make it worth visiting.

Maya Devi Temple is an ancient Buddhist temple situated at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Lumbini, Nepal. It is the main temple at Lumbini, a site traditionally considered the birthplace of Gautama Buddha. The temple stands adjacent to a sacred pool (known as pushkarani) and a sacred garden. The archaeological remains at the site were previously dated to the third-century BCE brick buildings constructed by Ashoka. A sixth-century BCE timber shrine was discovered in 2013.

Mayadevi Temple is a sacred religious and historical place which is the main attraction of Lumbini. Emperor Ashoka of India erected a Pillar in 249 BC in which the Brahmi Script writing on analysis confirmed that Gautam Buddha was born in Lumbini. Later in 19th century Khadga Samsher Rana and Anton Fuhrer, a German archeologist, further excavated the ruins of temple and the town that was dated back to 3rd century BC. Inside the temple there is a footstep of Gautam Buddha and marker stone confirming the site of birth of Buddha. Photography is strictly prohibited inside the temple. A pond is located beside the temple formed from two naturally occurring well (इनार) where it is believed that Mayadevi took bath after giving birth to Siddhartha Gautam. Ticket is mandatory for visit to all Nepali and Foreign nationals except if you are native resident of Rupandehi district. It is quite busy on weekend and during Buddha Jayanti. Avoid visiting Lumbini on summer as the heat is unbearable.
