Maya Papaya

I stayed in a private room with a private bathroom here for two nights and had a great experience! The staff was super kind - for breakfast on my second morning they started speaking to me in English and remembered from the prior morning that I was trying to practice my Spanish so switched to Spanish almost immediately. I was expecting breakfast to be a buffet but it is made to order so all the food was delicious and the right temperature. My room was comfortable and the shower had hot water. They also provided towels and my room was cleaned every day which I wasn't expecting. It is a hostel so you'll hear some noise from other people but nothing egregious in my experience and I had no issues sleeping. I would definitely recommend Maya Papaya and stay here again.

I recently stayed here, as the hostel had many positive reviews. Unfortunately, my experience did not live up to the hype. When I checked in, the man who welcomed us at reception was not that friendly. Additionally, when he gave us a tour of the property, he rushed through it. The same night, upon returning from dinner, we found ourselves locked out of the property. There are main gates that guests can unlock, then a set brown doors. The brown doors started to close just as we returned and were slightly ajar, but not with enough space for us to step in. The man from check in saw that we were locked outside. Instead of helping us, he walked away and sat back down at his desk. Thankfully another employee saw us and had enough decency to help us come in. As for the room, I booked a private room with its own bathroom. The first morning there, a leak was coming from either the sink or toilet, unclear which. The room is also poorly ventilated. There is a fan in the room to help with this issue, but unfortunately the one in my room did not work. The only thing good about my stay was the quality of the breakfast that is included, I had ordered pancakes that were well-made. Overall, I would suggest staying elsewhere.

One of the best hostels I've ever stayed in. Very clean, cosy beds (with 2 pillows), great facilities and cosy spots to hang around. The location was great and I felt very save. The staff was amazing! Shoutout to alexis for being incredibly polite and helpful and for sharing some local tips.

The facilities at Maya are unbeatable: impeccably clean showers, tidy common areas, and well-kept rooms all make for a great stay. The beds are by far the most comfortable I've slept on at a hostel, and the guests were very respectful so I slept well during my six night stay. The best part, though, are the friendly employees at Maya! Shoutout to Angel, who had great recommendations for me on things to do and where to eat in Antigua. Maya also has a great happy hour each day and events to socialize with other hostel-goers. I made lifelong friends at this hostel and would recommend this place to anyone staying in Antigua. A bonus, too, is that you get access to the company's other properties in Antigua so if you want a pool or rooftop view you can just hop over to Casi Casa which has equally friendly employees.

This was a very chill hostel with a great vibe, situated in a beautiful colonial building. The staff js friendly, social, and really set the vibe. The hostel is not too busy, and the private rooms are very nice and cleaned daily. There is a bar that stays open until late in the evening, but it is definitely not a party hostel.

At $35 a night, I expected more. Not even a towel included (you have to pay extra). Basic breakfast; pancakes or eggs. This is typically included for free in most hostels, even at 1/3 of the price. Female dorm was very hot and humid, with tiny windows. The bathroom is attached and so all the humidity stays inside. Lockers are metal and very noisy in the morning when people are packing. Also the curtains are super noisy. I didn’t sleep well in this hostel, it was some of the worst sleep in I had in months. Staff were nice, showers were good, and the mattress was comfortable. You can find way better hostels for half the price here in Antigua.

Rooms were great, clean, comfy. My only (light) complaint would be that the curtains (for the bunks) do not completely cover the sleeping area (none behind the latters) and thus leaves a solid foot or so of light coming into your room. Staff is fantastic, drinks are great, recommendations for activities great as well!

Had a nice stay at Maya Papaya. The atmosphere was warm, relaxed and chill. The staff members were friendly and helpful. The breakfast was good. The rooms were a bit small, but overall I really enjoyed my stay!
