We stayed at the Mayan Monkey and there were definitely some pros and cons to the experience.
On the positive side, the amenities were great. Everything was very clean, and our private room was comfortable and nicely kept.
That said, there were a few things that left us with a less-than-great impression. The hotel definitely has a party hostel vibe, with loud music going until around 1am, which may not be ideal if you’re looking for a quieter stay. At check-in, I had already paid the tourist tax in advance, but it was charged again—something I only realized at the end. It wasn’t clear if this was a mistake or intentional, but it didn’t sit right.
The most disappointing part came at checkout. A cleaner came in to do a “room inspection” (the first time I’ve ever experienced this in a hotel), and we were told a mug was missing. We hadn’t touched the coffee machine because the coffee was all decaf, so it was confusing to be charged $6 for something we hadn’t used. It honestly felt like the mug had gone missing elsewhere and we were blamed for it.
Overall, while the facilities themselves were nice, the unexpected charges and the atmosphere made the stay less enjoyable than it could have been. If you’re looking for a party vibe, it might suit you—but if you value quiet and straightforward service, you may want to consider alternatives.
