9 of the Best Places to Stay in South Australia

"Located in the heart of the CBD (or central business district, the Australian equivalent of a downtown area), the Mayfair has transformed the historic Colonial Mutual Life building. When the heritage structure was originally built in 1934, it was the city’s tallest building — and stayed that way for more than three decades. Slip up to the 13th floor for an alfresco cocktail at Hennessy, the posh rooftop bar, where you can cozy up in myriad nooks or sit on the Romanesque balcony. At breakfast, look for a table of honey choices, all collected from the rooftop apiary — and all the sweeter for it. From $199 AUD per night." - Travel + Leisure Editors

A stunning hotel, from the moment you walk in it has luxury and upmarket feel. Room was Evelyn appointed, bed was very comfortable and large bathroom. The was very stylish and most importantly very quiet considering if its in a main city road. The roof top bar is the perfect place to eat and drink the afternoon away, with nice views. Would definitely recommend stay at the Mayfair.

Overall a poor experience. Location is good-ish. Central to food scene, but many option well located options at a similar price point.||I get what they are going for in terms of atmosphere as a high end boutique hotel, but the visibly homeless people encamped at the main entrance give off other vibes.||Rooms are a decent size, but on checking in we found pubic hairs in the sheets. The bathrooms have great water pressure, the hot water comes on fast and the Hunter brand amenities are nice. Burnt out lightbulbs that weren’t replaced also no giving off luxury vibes.||Minibar was not restocked.||Overall service is pretty ordinary especially in the Den and Hennessy - disengaged, uninterested and unhelpful staff. Actually ended up dining at the restaurants of nearby hotels for breakfast.||Checkout was efficient, and details correct on checkout.

Love Mayfair. An elegantly restored heritage building, and beautiful inside and out. Bed and pillows are so comfy. Perfect location. Very good breakfast. Partner Wilson Parking just at side road. Love the feel, atmosphere and decor. Happy to go back!

Great location. Shopping district is just 1 min away by crossing the street in front of the hotel. Plenty of restaurant nearby which you don’t have to worry what to eat. The hotel room is spacious and cozy. Suitable to stay in for the the whole day. Their staff are also very welcoming and warm. Unfortunately I didn’t visit the roof top garden, if you happen to be here, visit the roof top garden and chill there. Recommend!!!

Excellent service from all staff. Attentiveness and polite. Clear communication on arrival. Ambience in hotel lobby, room perfect, buffet simple standard fair but good quality food. Variety enough for the small crowd staying in. Staff were friendly and prompt with our needs. Only 1 day after collecting our breakfast we asked if like usual the staff could place our coffee orders but she replied there a machine up front to help ourselves. Otherwise definitely return to the hotel for my trips to Adelaide.

Beautiful rooms very very comfortable beds - 10/10. The service staff weren't particularly helpful, Id made a mistake with my booking and they weren't able to rectify. I went onto booking.com and was able to rebook. Id expect more from the hotel front of house. If the rooms weren't so comfy I would have rated lower than 4 stars.

Perfect location in the centre of Adelaide, with taxis, public transport and shops on the doorstep. |The Artdeco decor shouts elegance as does the sweeping stairs to the Den.|Lunch was in The Den, a delightful private area for a business or private group.|Staff were attentive and professional. I think the chef had an off day(we all do) as my meal was not as expected. I will return another day though as the hotel has a good reputation.|There are other dining areas that offer breakfast, casual coffee, afternoon tea and a rooftop bar.

Location was great! I had a very disappointing experience with this hotel’s service. They had no issue taking my bond payment, but when it came time for the refund, it became a frustrating ordeal. I was asked multiple times to provide my card details again, and despite doing so, they kept calling to say there were still “issues.” What made the situation worse was how it was handled by management. Instead of apologizing or showing understanding for the inconvenience, the manager actually hung up on me when I expressed frustration. That’s not the kind of customer service you expect from a 5 star hotel.

Yelp
I stopped by the Mayfair Hotel at the bar section on the roof top for drinks and to check out the place. A group of us headed to the lobby to use the lift however the front reception advised us that we have to take the stairs below to access to the lift, to take us to the roof top. Hotel lobby is quite brilliant and charming, very up market and the hotel is situated across from the main street. It was relatively packed at the roof top on a cold Saturday night, but the view of the city lights were stunning. There wasn't a lot of room to sit as most people have taken all the chairs but didn't have to wait too long as a group left a table with chairs. We enjoyed the view and looked at the wine/cocktail list. Cocktails ranged from $20+, a bit expensive pricey however I purchased a $22 cocktail as the bar tender recommended the honey and vodka. It was a strong mix and the honey helped to drink it down. There was a DJ in the corner, playing old classics such as Jackson 5, the music was pleasant enough for people to talk to one another. I didn't stay for too long, as well as some other customers whom stayed for a drink, check out the view and then leave. I think people stay for the view and have a couple of drinks and then move on to the next bar. I'll definitely come back for another visit, not as a regular but to check out the view again. If the drinks were a bit cheaper then I might stay a little longer there.

Yelp
Wow! Wow! Wow! I love this amazing new hotel! We had a lovely high tea in the downstairs dining area for my sisters hens day. The staff were attentive, the manager was lovely and helpful, the food and drinks delightful. This was my first high tea experience so wasn't sure how much food to expect. If your a big eater have a small lunch prior, but I found the meal sufficient especially with a glass of bubbles and flat white. There is however an addition cake cart to purchase extra treats for the sweet tooth in us all! My sister had a fantastic time as we were allowed to bring in some decorations and play some games. Quite a few girls indulged in cocktails that looked and tasted suburb. Well done guys I can't wait to come back for dinner!!

Yelp
Stayed here with a wedding party for 3 nights. Love love loved it. Very New and clean. Trendy roof top bar. Enjoyed the L'ocitane toiletries. Bed was a king and was very comfy. Had a good night sleep every night. Concierge and house keeping were very helpful and considerate. All the hotel workers had the best customer service. I was really sad to have to check out. Convenient location to everything. Walking distance to shopping and food. Must come back again even if my flight to Adelaide will take 24 hours.

Yelp
I can't rave enough about the outstanding, attentive service we received today in The Den Bistro! It was my husband and daughter's birthday and the wait staff went out of their way to make them feel extra special! Their kindness and attentiveness is unparalleled in our experience of Adelaide establishments. I hope they both receive employee of the month and a big raise! The food and drinks were pretty amazing too. We will be back for every birthday from now on! Thank you!

Yelp
Even though the room was lovely, and the breakfast was nice, I've had to give Mayfair 2 stars due to strange payment tactics. The room was around $200 per night, and they hold $150 for incidentals. We were surprised that it was so high (most around around the $100 mark). We paid $200 plus breakfast and carparking. What we didn't realise was that they also took an extra $200 for the room rate (which we had already paid upfront!) PLUS the $150 as a 'bond' which they kept for 1 week!! So for a week we were out of pocket by $350. When my partner emailed them to ask if a mistake had been made, they didn't even respond. She emailed them twice, just in case the email had gone missing ... and still no response. So if you want to stay a night at the Mayfair, make sure you have around $550 spare - don't worry, you'll get your $350 back after a week or so. Not impressed ... there are plenty of other places to stay in Adelaide, so I don't see the point in coming back here.

Yelp
The cons: 1. The worst thing was the fact the pillows were too hard and too tall. Our necks were bent both nights and sleep was horrible. We found out at check-out that there is a "pillow menu." It would have been helpful to know about that menu at check-in, not check-out. 2. At registered guests, we were looking for a bite to eat in the hotel restaurant and were turned away even though 80% of the tables were empty, ostensibly because those tables were reserved. The pros: 1. Rooms were clean. 2. Hotel was recently updated. 3. Staff friendly and courteous 4. Location of the hotel is perfect for shopping, dining. We'd stay here again.

Yelp
5 stars - centrally located with superb service. Stayed here for a week on a recent business trip - everything was outstanding - clean and luxurious. The breakfast package is lovely. Thank you, Mayfair.

Yelp
Business traveler here: The hotel itself has a lot of potential, but the management and the front desk staff do not live up to it. If the hotel is interested in growing its customer base they need to pay attention as to how they serve and treat those business travelers. Housekeeping was a bit disappointing in paying attention to particular requests, the front desk was also very challenging in accommodating specific needs, including their non-existing concierge service. As they say it's all on the details; nobody greets you at the door, nobody assists you with your luggage, front door will not open while you struggle in (nobody really even cracks a smile). The only service that was top-notch was in-room dining, Estevan (one of their service staff was incredibly professional), although the menu needs quite a bit of adjustment, the staff and the overall service they render was impeccable. On a side note: the hotel will seek to charge you every which way they can, including the Amex surcharge for any payment utilizing the card. Not really interested in returning to this property. Wait until the upcoming SPG properties open.
