9 of the Best Places to Stay in South Australia

"Located in the heart of the CBD, I experienced a transformed historic building originally erected in 1934 as the Colonial Mutual Life building, once Adelaide’s tallest structure; I enjoyed alfresco cocktails on the 13th-floor rooftop bar Hennessy with cozy nooks and a Romanesque balcony, and noticed the thoughtful breakfast detail of a table of honeys collected from the hotel’s rooftop apiary." - Hannah Lott-Schwartz Hannah Lott-Schwartz Hannah Lott-Schwartz is an award-winning lifestyle journalist and editor. Great hotel, friendly and professional staff. Minor problem with the shower in the room we were relocated within 30mins. Breakfast is excellent, fresh and a variety of choices Excellent location in the city close to everything. Highly recommended.

We got married and stayed here for the night. Absolute delight. Bed and room was really nice, luxurious and comfortable. The gift was a perfect touch! Chocolate dip strawberry with champagne. Thanks for a wonderful night.

Do not stay here! We endured mouldy sheets and when we showed the photos we were told it was probably due to the humidity in the room. This was not the case it was 40 degrees outside so the air-conditioning was on 18. No excuse to have mouldy sheets! All we were offered was a pityful 10% back of our 4 night stay to use in CREDIT for a future stay not our money back! We will not be staying here ever again. Management and the service team do not know how to deal with customers. AVOID!!!!!! Unless you want to get very unwell. I left the hotel with Influenza A and am still suffering 2 weeks later.

Couldn’t fault the Mayfair. Very good service, bed very comfortable except no cover on the spare pillow in the cupboard, but that is minor. Quiet even though we were facing Hindley Street. Hallways and rooms very clean. Free, though limited, minibar a nice touch and appreciated the normal checkout time of 11am. Location great and a nice anniversary stay. Thank you.

Staff are all so lovely and the location is great. However for a hotel that boasts quality the rooms could of been tidier and the lack of smart tvs is very disappointing free to air TV isn't really enough in 2025. The WiFi also did not work at all. The beds were extremely comfortable though. Room service was very quick but far too pricey for the quality.

Google
The staff is nice (+1 star). The location is really convenient + car park (+1 star). The breakfast is average with some selection and a free coffee per person. However some of the food feels a bit stale e.g. mini muffins (-1 star). The beds are SUPER uncomfortable and the pillows are rock hard and too high for the neck (-1 star). The room service is so expensive for its quality and the bar closes way too early for a 5 star hotel. (-1 star).

Really nice hotel with lots of amenities and in a great location. We stayed for 3 nights in an executive suite which included breakfast and a free cocktail at Hennessy Bar each night. The free minibar was also a nice touch. The only issue was with the shower running hot and cold

We stayed here twice once for two night and the other time four nights. The hotel changed its name whilst we were there! Both rooms were a decent size. Bathrooms were good but water wasn’t that hot in the showers, after we complained it got better. Rooms serviced daily but no turn down service. We didn’t eat at the hotel - lots of restaurants nearby.

Yelp
I love that they repurposed the old life insurance building in a very convenient part of the town. The lobby was open and staff were friendly and accommodating. Depending on the time of day (I think), one of the elevators exclusively goes to the rooftop bar. The room was spacious, with a nice comfy bed and pillows. We had a nice view of the city. The bathroom was large. Nice soaps, fluffy towels and great water pressure in the shower. We could walk everywhere, including the shopping arcade across the street. Everything in Adelaide is about a 15 minute walk in any direction. Lots of shops, restaurants, coffee. Even the nice Botanical Gardens was within a walkable distance. The bar on the top floor gives a nice view. It's cozy but seating is limited. This boutique hotel is a nice change from the chains--I guess, until it's taken over as a Kimpton in 2026.

Yelp
Wow! Wow! Wow! I love this amazing new hotel! We had a lovely high tea in the downstairs dining area for my sisters hens day. The staff were attentive, the manager was lovely and helpful, the food and drinks delightful. This was my first high tea experience so wasn't sure how much food to expect. If your a big eater have a small lunch prior, but I found the meal sufficient especially with a glass of bubbles and flat white. There is however an addition cake cart to purchase extra treats for the sweet tooth in us all! My sister had a fantastic time as we were allowed to bring in some decorations and play some games. Quite a few girls indulged in cocktails that looked and tasted suburb. Well done guys I can't wait to come back for dinner!!

Yelp
I stopped by the Mayfair Hotel at the bar section on the roof top for drinks and to check out the place. A group of us headed to the lobby to use the lift however the front reception advised us that we have to take the stairs below to access to the lift, to take us to the roof top. Hotel lobby is quite brilliant and charming, very up market and the hotel is situated across from the main street. It was relatively packed at the roof top on a cold Saturday night, but the view of the city lights were stunning. There wasn't a lot of room to sit as most people have taken all the chairs but didn't have to wait too long as a group left a table with chairs. We enjoyed the view and looked at the wine/cocktail list. Cocktails ranged from $20+, a bit expensive pricey however I purchased a $22 cocktail as the bar tender recommended the honey and vodka. It was a strong mix and the honey helped to drink it down. There was a DJ in the corner, playing old classics such as Jackson 5, the music was pleasant enough for people to talk to one another. I didn't stay for too long, as well as some other customers whom stayed for a drink, check out the view and then leave. I think people stay for the view and have a couple of drinks and then move on to the next bar. I'll definitely come back for another visit, not as a regular but to check out the view again. If the drinks were a bit cheaper then I might stay a little longer there.

Yelp
Stayed here with a wedding party for 3 nights. Love love loved it. Very New and clean. Trendy roof top bar. Enjoyed the L'ocitane toiletries. Bed was a king and was very comfy. Had a good night sleep every night. Concierge and house keeping were very helpful and considerate. All the hotel workers had the best customer service. I was really sad to have to check out. Convenient location to everything. Walking distance to shopping and food. Must come back again even if my flight to Adelaide will take 24 hours.

Yelp
I can't rave enough about the outstanding, attentive service we received today in The Den Bistro! It was my husband and daughter's birthday and the wait staff went out of their way to make them feel extra special! Their kindness and attentiveness is unparalleled in our experience of Adelaide establishments. I hope they both receive employee of the month and a big raise! The food and drinks were pretty amazing too. We will be back for every birthday from now on! Thank you!

Yelp
Even though the room was lovely, and the breakfast was nice, I've had to give Mayfair 2 stars due to strange payment tactics. The room was around $200 per night, and they hold $150 for incidentals. We were surprised that it was so high (most around around the $100 mark). We paid $200 plus breakfast and carparking. What we didn't realise was that they also took an extra $200 for the room rate (which we had already paid upfront!) PLUS the $150 as a 'bond' which they kept for 1 week!! So for a week we were out of pocket by $350. When my partner emailed them to ask if a mistake had been made, they didn't even respond. She emailed them twice, just in case the email had gone missing ... and still no response. So if you want to stay a night at the Mayfair, make sure you have around $550 spare - don't worry, you'll get your $350 back after a week or so. Not impressed ... there are plenty of other places to stay in Adelaide, so I don't see the point in coming back here.

Yelp
The cons: 1. The worst thing was the fact the pillows were too hard and too tall. Our necks were bent both nights and sleep was horrible. We found out at check-out that there is a "pillow menu." It would have been helpful to know about that menu at check-in, not check-out. 2. At registered guests, we were looking for a bite to eat in the hotel restaurant and were turned away even though 80% of the tables were empty, ostensibly because those tables were reserved. The pros: 1. Rooms were clean. 2. Hotel was recently updated. 3. Staff friendly and courteous 4. Location of the hotel is perfect for shopping, dining. We'd stay here again.

Yelp
5 stars - centrally located with superb service. Stayed here for a week on a recent business trip - everything was outstanding - clean and luxurious. The breakfast package is lovely. Thank you, Mayfair.

Yelp
Business traveler here: The hotel itself has a lot of potential, but the management and the front desk staff do not live up to it. If the hotel is interested in growing its customer base they need to pay attention as to how they serve and treat those business travelers. Housekeeping was a bit disappointing in paying attention to particular requests, the front desk was also very challenging in accommodating specific needs, including their non-existing concierge service. As they say it's all on the details; nobody greets you at the door, nobody assists you with your luggage, front door will not open while you struggle in (nobody really even cracks a smile). The only service that was top-notch was in-room dining, Estevan (one of their service staff was incredibly professional), although the menu needs quite a bit of adjustment, the staff and the overall service they render was impeccable. On a side note: the hotel will seek to charge you every which way they can, including the Amex surcharge for any payment utilizing the card. Not really interested in returning to this property. Wait until the upcoming SPG properties open.
