The hotel room we stayed in was warm and comforting. This room really highlighted McCloud's lumber history; with thoughts of being in a treehouse looking up at Mt. Shasta.

This place is phenomenal. The most beautiful hotel room I’ve ever stayed in. When I opened the door my jaw hit the floor! First let me start with the lady at the front desk was so kind and helpful. We were traveling with our dog and booked their only pet-friendly room. When we arrived we were told there was an issue with the room we booked and even though we had our dog with us she upgraded us to another room at no additional charge. And this room was amazing! So clean, so well decorated. We had a view of Mt. Shasta, a fireplace, and a jacuzzi tub. Who ever renovated this hotel has an incredible eye. We’d love to return and stay in their other rooms cause they are all unique! They also have nugget ice and hot chocolate in the lounge area, along with a coffee shop, a cafe, and boutiques in the same building under the rooms (all worth checking out). Thanks so much for a wonderful experience!

Stayed over the Christmas holidays a few years ago. Got one of the nicer rooms - it was big, had a claw foot tub in the room. But the mattress on the bed was the cheapest, oldest mattress I have ever slept on. I’m not talking about mattress preference re hard or soft, I’m talking lumpy, uneven surface and, in places, the springs from the mattress were broken. I would be embarrassed to have a guest stay at my house and sleep on such an old, dilapidated mattress. It’s unfathomable that a hotel thinks that this is acceptable.

Stayed here last night. What a neat old place! Tons of character. An old timey candy shop near the check in. And we had breakfast at a neat diner at the other end of the building in the morning.

Incredible history beautiful town. Great people. Step back in time. Great getaway for the family

Google
Pretty damn magical, with rustic charm, rooms full of antiques and ample porch space to sit and drink a beer in the dark at 11pm. Somehow, also very reasonably priced and conveniently located in the same building as most of the shops in town. This place will have you browsing Zillow for local real estate as soon as you've got your room keys.

We stayed at the McCloud Mercantile Hotel for our anniversary this past weekend in the Shasta Wintu room. It was SO romantic and absolutely exceeded our expectations. The building has been restored and up kept beautifully and the room was very clean and the atmosphere cozy. We almost never sleep well our first night away from home and both of us got a great nights sleep the first night. Truly a gem of a place to stay. The breakfast credit toward either of the breakfast places downstairs was wonderful and both breakfasts were delicious. We won’t stay anywhere else if we visit Shasta again. I look forward to checking out the other rooms! 5 stars!

Where to start!! This gem was one of the best parts of our 3 week trip! Road closures forced us to quickly find a hotel and we were lucky to get one of the last rooms in town! Boy did we luck out! Spotless is the first thing I noticed. The warm, friendly welcome of the owner and her staff was so wonderful! The place is like a museum…a gorgeous ,meticulously kept up, heritage building. Our room was massive with all the comforts guests would need! The bed was oh so comfortable with high quality bedding! The soaker claw foot tub for 2 was a needed bonus! Then there was a massive shower with two shower heads!! Wifi was strong, water was excellent pressure and plenty of hot water! But wait there is more… a kitchen for guests to use with teas coffee hot chocolate microwave and fridge and ice maker. There is also a large living room area with an toasty wood fireplace going and games to play! And then to our surprise the price was totally reasonable with a 24 $ credit to the 2 restaurants they have on site! We had an amazing breakfast at their restaurant!! For dinner we ate at the Axe and Rose it was fantastic food and drinks and service were great!! This cute little town is worth the visit! I just wish we had more time to explore and stay with these lovely people!!

Yelp
Spent 5 hours on the road and $700 to be poisoned by the kerosine heater in room 211. Unfortunately, I have a terrible illness and have a lot of limitations so room 211 was chosen with strategy. Also, people on break kept coming onto the balcony smoking their cigarettes which both toxins waffled into the room whenever the door was open. This is a dog friendly room, which means opening and closing the door every time the dog out to go potty And dealing with the ridiculous off gas of kerosene. It was quite the effort to get away, but much needed if you know anything about the life of a sick person. It was suggested that I didn't use the heater if it was so bothersome. However, the draft under the door kept kicking the heater on and it was snowing outside. I thought the request was a little insensitive seeing as I am a bag of bones with no climate coping skills due to the illness. That draft / gap under the door also allowed the kerosene off gas in the room and can be smelled while in bed. It wasn't enough to trigger the carbon monoxide sensor, but the old factories had no problem, picking up parts per million. How is this even legal? I have stayed in the hotel other times, and had a great time, no complaints. Never stayed in 211 until now. This was a horrific, worrisome experience instead of a peaceful getaway .

Yelp
Stayed in this boutique hotel at the beginning of the month and it was wonderful, you check in at the gift store on the first floor and access your rooms via outside door. Good covid 19 precautions with rules posted in the communal dining hall, hand sanitizer available . Even though we knew most of the rooms were occupied it was quiet and peaceful and we didn't run into anyone. We stayed in the room 208 which had a huge bathroom with high ceilings. Great toiletries included, classic bath tub, and plenty of towels. Bed was comfy! Due to the pandemic we didn't use the pillows and opted for our own but they looked nice and soft! Thank you for a comfortable and safe stay.

Cute little place. Just came in to grab a bottle of water while at the McCloud Mushroom festival.

Yelp
This was a 5 star experience for sure. The clothing and gift selections were fantastic and the old fashioned customer service a true delight. I live in Mt Shasta and drove for Christmas gifts. I was so delighted to have someone listen to my questions snd provide me with great results. I went in looking fir one shirt and bought 5. My grandkids will love these high quality local shirts and sweatshirts. I will be back.

Yelp
The mountain called and we answered! This place, these people, this water, the air and most importantly the memories of our "Best Day" mean everything to us! You would be hard pressed to find a more magical place that reminds you of everything that is still good in this world! A place where people still say hello, how are you to strangers. People who recognize that there are no strangers only friends you have not met. If you are looking for that feeling, for your heart to recognize the good in the world than you have found the right place at the McCloud River Mercantile Hotel. We found this special place and have clung to it because of the magic that is McCloud and most especially the McCloud Merchantile Hotel!

Yelp
Charming spot! Nicely appointed rooms with vintage feel. We stayed in the Charles Miller room and loved it. The view is the best as you can see Mt Shasta clearly from the bed and (if you turn the two big chairs around). The king size bed is super comfy, the sheets were so soft. There is an extra bed in the annex to the room for those with a child. The bathroom is large and has a separate toilet and shower room. The shower head was messed up and I ended up holding it in my hand to aim correctly. They could use a hook or two to put towel/clothes. Also, no hair dryer to be found. I did like the shampoo and conditioner, high quality! Others have told you about the cute common kitchen. That is a plus! I'd come back!

Yelp
My family and I have stayed at the wonderful historic building on Several occasions. Very warm and loving you feel like you're part of their family. They've spent a lot of time and love on researching the history of the building and when you walk in it feels like you're walking back in time. If you're ever in Mccloud this is a must . It's A wonderful stop and stay location.

Yelp
I can't say enough about our stay at the McCloud Merc Hotel. We just stayed there this weekend and what a great experience. It was a weekend getaway for our anniversary and we were not disappointed in the least. Extremely clean and well maintained room and hotel. Upon finding out that it was our anniversary the hotelier offered to make us reservations at a near by restaurant, ( Harvest will get an excellent review as well) and there were flowers in our room when we arrived She was very friendly and helpful. The room was very clean and spacious with a fantastic rustic feel. Regrettably I didn't get pics of the room but I can tell you they wouldn't do it justice. The location is great as it was central to everything we wanted to do. We will definitely make this an annual getaway.

Yelp
Wow. The Mercantile Hotel far exceeded my expectations and got a fist bump from my hubby and son for finding this fine establishment to stay in. The check in is contactless, adhering to COVID guidelines. When you first walk in, there's a carpeted stairway leading up to the rooms. Each room is themed and so warm and cozy. The common area gives you the feel of home. The fireplace is lit each night and makes for beautiful ambience. It felt like home and we didn't want to leave! I LOVED THE MERC! Will return again!

Yelp
I wish I could leave more stars for this place. My boyfriend and I came up for a few days to hike and check out the sights. This hotel exceed our expectations. The owners are immensely friendly and made our stay exceedingly pleasant.. they have great places to eat in this quiet small town the best in mount Shasta to be honest.. the photos don't do this hotel justice! The Shasta room is so comfortable they have a great tub perfect for after hiking and a very comfortable bed for a great nights sleep. We will definitely be coming back here regularly. A hidden gem in the mountains

Yelp
My boyfriend and I were supposed to camp in McCloud... However, there was a serious lightning storm followed by heavy rain! I love lightning, but it was striking pretty close to camp so we opted to go next door and see if rooms were available at the Country Dance Hotel (I think that's what it was called, next to the RV park). Just our luck!! Darlene overheard that we needed a place to stay for the night because of the weather and she offered us her last room. Such a sweet woman. She gave us a discount for the night at $129. This place was amazing. We had the attic room (sorry, forgot exact name), which was really vintage and beautiful. The rooms are right above the shops on the first floor and I didn't hear a thing! The common area is really cute and nicely decorated. Anyway, our room was extremely neat and organized and clean! Lots of room, great decor, free wi-fi, and tv. Breakfast is included at the cafe on the corner too :P If you're a couple looking to stop by McCloud or on a date night, stay here. Staff is wonderful, lovely shops, great community, beautiful scenery, and a unique place to stay. (no pets so our dogs stayed in the car. lots of room to park as well)

Yelp
Hm! If you are looking for a flawless hotel this is not the right one for you. Judge for yourself. Pictures taken in July '21. Other than that it's a cozy old style hotel in a small town. I would have given 4 stars if the sheets looked fresh. The window frames needed some love as well. Old doesn't mean it can be dirty.p

Lesli W.

Yelp
Four Fantastic nights at Mccloud's Mercantile Hotel. Kevin and Darlene have done an unbelievable job at restoring this historical building with such a rich past. The whole town is so quaint with such welcoming people. The location between Shasta and the different local Falls is ideal, waking up every morning with Mt Shasta outside the hotel is a site to be seen. Again Kevin and Darlene are marvelous hosts with a world of knowledge about the area. Don't think twice about staying at the Mercantile Hotel in McCloud. BTW last night we had a wonderful meal the "Harvest" restaurant on the McCloud Golf Course one mile away from the hotel. Other restaurants in town are great also.

Yelp
Wonderful stay! Charles Miller room has a great view of Shasta! Clean, comfortable and quiet. We will be back to stay in a different room just because they are all done so well.

Yelp
It was a fantastic stay! We really enjoyed every moment we spent in this beautiful hotel. Despite our cozy room, we enjoyed a lot a common room with a fireplace equipped with some board games.

Yelp
I stayed in the Railroad Room two nights in June 2012 with two teens, 15 and 13. It was a huge room overlooking the main entrance with a queen bed and two twins. The room was immaculate, sparsely appointed with furniture: two nightstands, a small table and a console for a small flatscreen television. The mattresses were firm and comfortable. The bathroom had a soaking tub and separate shower with two sinks and a water closet. It was stylish and classic looking with white octagon floor tile. It was well appointed with upscale shampoo and conditioner. The only negative was the water pressure was low (it was slow to fill the tub), but adequate for showering. Dining was available downstairs at the White Mountain Cafe. We ate there two mornings, only for breakfast. The food was hearty, traditional, with HUGE portions: large flapjacks (about 8" in diameter!), biscuits and gravy (two large split biscuits smothered in a cup of gravy), humungous omelets (they must use 3 or 4 eggs), and reasonably priced. I only wish they were open past 9pm for dinner (we never made it back to the hotel before then). Our rate included a $20 credit for breakfast each morning. The hosts were service oriented by recommending a room that met our needs (3 beds). They managed to keep us in the same room two consecutive nights (originally the room we booked the first night wasn't available the second). They also left a useful map with information on accessing the McCloud River Falls, 5 miles east on Hwy 89. My only criticism: keep the wifi is working. There are three wifi hotspots, but they were not working the first night and most of the second night. I was trying to use my laptop over wifi but I had to do it on my iPad over the cellular network instead. Fortunately none of my work depended on the apps or files on my laptop. All in all we had a terrific time at the McCloud River Mercantile Inn and it will be our first choice for any return visit!

Yelp
Wow...I really can't describe how wonderful this place is. Our stay here was not planned. We were driving down from Portland with no reservation, planning on staying in Sacramento, but because of a late start we decided to find a place sooner. I called and the owner answered who was so nice and helpful. He gave us an excellent rate on The Founder's Room. We had no idea what to expect. We opened the door and were AMAZED. The room was gorgeous, down to every detail. It had a fireplace and ball and claw footed tub with a separate two-headed shower. In the morning, there was hoout cocoa, tea and coffee out with every imaginable accoutrement (marshmallows, candies, sprinkles and candy canes). Breakfast at the local restaurant around the corner was included in the room. I only wish we had known of this place sooner and had more time to spend. If it was closer to home, I would come back often. Even with the distance, I plan on returning as often as possible. Seriously...this place is magical!

Yelp
My husband and I decided to check out Mt Shasta for a get away weekend. This place is so peaceful, relaxing and beautiful. We enjoyed Middle falls and site seeing around the area. We stayed in the Shasta Winter Suite. The suite was so cozy and inviting. I personally love historic places and history. This place was a beautiful step back in time. Darlene, lady of the Mercantile is so gracious, accommodating and warm. She even set up a personal couple's massage to enjoy in our room when we arrived on Friday night. When the internet went down, she personally brought us a hot spot to enjoy Saturday evening after hours. The Meat Market Bar and Grill offered a delicious Ribeye and decadent Creme Brûlée Cheesecake for our Dinner our Friday night. Hilary, was such an attentive and gracious hostess. The little shops offer sweets, trinkets and other little treasures. My husband loved the fudge. The Bourbon Vanilla, Mistral Soaps smell absolutely amazing. We loved this tiny little piece of heaven and will definitely be back. A huge, "Thank you" to Darlene and her amazing staff. Brian and Jenny Thorstensen

Yelp
Since I have never been up to Mt. Shasta or McCloud, we decided to spend a long weekend here for our anniversary. I wanted to stay in a bit modern and less dated B&B and this is just your place. If you go to their website and read about the innkeepers bio, you will also find their story to be awe inspiring and you wonder if you can do something like that one day. There are four B&B's on Main street. The McCloud River Mercantile Hotel use to be Lumbar company store built in the 1890s. The InnKeepers gutted out the interior and did major renovations on it for past 7 years. You can read the story here: http://www.mccloudmercantile.com/history.htm and http://www.mccloudmercantile.com/innkeepers.htm Each room has a different theme and we stayed in the "Hot and Tot" theme room. It was around $130/night which is super reasonable compared to other B&B's that we have visited. The bed was comfortable, a bit squeaky though. Everything was clean and tastefully remodeled and designed with a touch of old town beauty. You have to check-in through the general store (clothing store where they sell soap, dishes, clothes, wine, stationary) and you get a $20/credit at the White Mountain Cafe next door for breakfast. Everyone we encountered were friendly and hospitable. It was probably a bit too quiet of a town for me but I think I might just revisit one day if I feel the need to get away from the hustle and bustle of SF. Loved the mellow dog, Whisper (mixed Labrador and German Shepard).

Yelp
We stumbled upon McCloud and this hotel for a place to stay on Christmas Eve close to Shasta Ski Park. Nothing in the town is new, and that is what gives it part of it's charm. The hotel had incredible service, a homey family feel, and is everything you might expect out of well loved and cared for 100 year old Victorian. We will definitely be coming back, regardless of the season. Perfectly suited for our three children with our room beautifully decorated for Christmas and a sweet little candy shop in the hotel!

Yelp
Greatest hotel I've ever been to and they're my cousin so I get to hang out with them

Yelp
I stayed here for an evening when we decided to go up north on a last minute trip to see Mt Shasta. We were given the tour of the hotel and as soon as we saw the space, I knew we had to stay here! The staff was unbelievably accommodating, the bed was like a cloud and the amenities were awesome from free WiFi, to a complementary yummy breakfast in the wildflower bakery downstairs (you really don't want to miss this new restaurant) to the snacks and coffee/tea/hot chocolate always available. The attention to detail was exceptional! Don't miss this place and make sure you say hi to Cindy & Sarah, they were the best!! Thanks again for having us, we'll definitely be back.
google avatar

Kathy C.

Yelp
This hotel is beautiful just as their website pictures. The rooms are big and decorated so nicely. The bathroom is huge and the room is so clean . We are definitely coming back and staying longer. Also, there is a candy store and the hotel gives you a $20 credit off your breakfast which is fabulous!

Yelp
This place was amazing! We pulled up late (after hours) with no reservation because we were meant to camp but it was snowy and freezing. They opened up a shop for us and checked us in. This hotel is extremely cute, historical and shabby chic! So happy to stumble upon it. Everyone we encountered was absolutely delightful. The owners and some friends invited us for drinks by the fireplace, helped us find dinner and showed us a place for breakfast. (You get $10 off per guest) We definitely want to come back

Yelp
A lovely stay in the Minnesota room. East-facing, second-floor (stairs only), with a view of cute Main St in McCloud. This pretty room is even nicer in person than in the photos - high ceilings, period details, bright & airy, very comfortable bed, great air conditioning (this area gets hot in summer), fast wifi, quiet & relaxing. The staff were very friendly and helpful. There is a TV with cable, but no fridge or coffee-making stuff in-room. Gorgeous large bathroom, double sink, claw foot tub with shower head. Really nice toiletries - Essential Elements rosemary shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, and liquid and bar soap. The tub/shower was slightly difficult to step into for me since I'm short. Had to hop up to get into the bed, too! McCloud is such a quiet, sleepy little town. I loved the sense of peacefulness, the cute homes and businesses, and the gorgeous view of Mount Shasta. A five mile drive east on 89 will take you to wooded walking trails to several waterfalls. Not many places to eat dinner unless you want to drive to Mount Shasta City or Dunsmuir. I recommend making a reservation for dinner in the McCloud Hotel restaurant a few blocks down the street. I will definitely be back!

Yelp
While we didn't stay in the rooms this whole building is just spectacular! Amazing old historical building that has been renovated beautifully. This town is a gem and I'm so glad we stopped for the day.

Yelp
Hands down the most beautiful and unique hotel I've ever been too. We stayed in the Friday George room, it was just beautiful and comfortable - we woke up to an amazing view of a snow covered mountain. The owners are so incredibly friendly and accommodating! Such a delightful stay.
google avatar

DeAnna D.

Yelp
Interesting, laid-back hotel with unique rooms. It is not a traditional B & B. Each room is given a $20.00 breakfast credit for the cafe next door. We (two of us) ran $8.00 over; not including tip. The problem with this system is if four+ people are staying, $20.00 does not cover the meal. I like the sitting area with the wood stove. A microwave and glassware is available. I wouldn't book a room adjacent to this area. We have stayed here twice and like the owner. He's a nice guy and very approachable. First we stayed in the Hot and Tot room and this time the Founder's Suite. We both loved the Founder's Suite; it is so unique. If you want unique gifts and are heading north, look about this small town. It's surprising but there are unusually nice items from clothing to candy and MUCH less expensive than places in Oregon such as Ashland and Jacksonville. Buy your gifts and souvenirs here.

Yelp
We stayed here last week while on our anniversary and were very impressed by the hotel. There was a quilting retreat going on so the rest of the rooms were booked by the quilting group, all of whom were very nice. The hotel has successfully kept the historic integrity of the building intact while adding some more modern features (slate in our bathroom, for example). It was done tastefully - no doilies or jacquard fabric anywhere! We had the Friday George room. It was small, but cozy and perfect for two people. The view of Mount Shasta from our room was breathtaking. The bed and sheets were so comfortable -- I wanted to sleep all day! Not only was Kevin, one of the owners, super friendly and helpful, the locals we spoke with were more than willing to recommend hikes and other activities in the McCloud area. They give you a credit for the cafe downstairs ($10 per person). Breakfast at the cafe was good -- I preferred the hashbrowns over the home fries as the home fries were basically boiled red potatoes. While the menu was limited it would be easy for anyone to find something to order. All in all, a great stay with friendly people, quiet and private rooms, and a very beautiful hotel. We will stay here again!

Yelp
This has to be one of the most unique hotels I have ever stayed at! I stayed here for a wedding I was photographing and the entire hotel (its only 11 rooms so hotel is probably to "grand" of a word) was occupied by wedding guests. Each room is different and has a theme. Luckily since we knew everyone there, we got to see each room. My wife and I stayed in the 1940's room. Super quaint with a HUGE bathroom! The whirlpool tub was amazing! The beds were good. There are 2 double beds so my wife and I had out own bed! (hence the 1940's theme! LOL). Her bed was kind of squeaky but not bad at all. Almost the entire Inn has original hardwood floors so sound does carry. But if you arent with a bunch of party going wedding guests its not much to worry about. The best part is the breakfast credit you get at the cafe downstairs! For 2 days our total bill for breakfast was about $15! And the food was VERY GOOD! The cafe is a little small so if there are a lot of guests or a lot of locals there you will have to wait. If you are going up to McCloud this place is totally worth staying at! So much character and it is more an experience than just a hotel.

Yelp
We stayed here last week with 2 couples and we had a wonderful time. The rooms were amazing, and exactly as shown on the website. Every room has a different theme from the past. We really felt like we were 100 years back in time, but with all the luxuries we could ask for. Our room had a bathtub-on-clawed-legs in the room, which reminded me of those old western movies. The bathtub really worked, and it was nicely set up with towels and soap. We also had a separate bathroom with double showers. Everything was spacious and clean. The bed was a bit too soft for me, but that is just my super-personal opinion. Because of our late check-in, we arrived to find the hotel keys taped to the door with our names on it. I guess McCloud is a very honest town! We could just go to our rooms without seeing any staff members, and we paid the next day in the store downstairs. Breakfast downstairs was great as well, and it was a nice surprise that we had a 20 dollar credit per room. Everybody was super-friendly, and we wish we could have stayed one more night. But we will be back!

Yelp
I can't say enough nice things about this place. Cozy and clean, the owner, Kevin is friendly and low-key. I almost hesitate to write a review because I don't want to have to fight others for a reservation but I also never want this place to go out of business. We will definitely be going back--we stayed in the Hot and Tot room with our 18 month old and having a crib in the room (complete with linens!) was such a thoughtful perk/touch. The common room is lovely with a wood burning stove and a small kitchen, coffee maker and tea supplies. The walls and carpet are thick, so noise is nicely dampened. They strike terrific balance between quaint ambiance and practical touches to make for a really relaxing, enjoyable stay.

Yelp
Two years ago I married my husband at the Mercantile! We stayed the night in one of their beautifully decorated rooms and couldn't have been happier with our stay. I couldn't get over how well restored and designed it all was, simply beautiful with a great view of the mountain! Highly recommend the Mercantile if you're looking for a beautiful getaway.

Yelp
My wife and I had the pleasure of spending our 2nd wedding anniversary at the Mercantile Hotel. It was one of the nicest experiences we've had in a long time. The innkeepers were friendly, warm, and an absolutely wonderful family to chat with. Both mornings started off with great full breakfasts in the adjoining restaurant served by very friendly staff. Our room (The Founders Suite) was beautifully decorated, exceptionally clean, and refreshingly quiet. The fresh flowers, wonderful claw foot tub, and kind personal touches from the innkeepers made for a very welcomed stay. Visiting from the fast-paced Silicon Valley, it was truly a revitalizing experience to unwind by the window overlooking the railroad tracks at dusk while listening to nothing but the whisper of the wind and ponder life. We can't comment positively enough on how great of a time we had at this wonderful establishment. We really appreciated how everyone went out of their way to ensure that we had an enjoyable and comfortable stay. This is undoubtedly the place that we'll be coming back to the next time we visit the McCloud/Shasta area.

Sullivan W.

Yelp
The Mercantile is a beautiful, cozy, and clean place to stay. Each room has its own personality and unique furnishings. The building itself has an authentic, old-world charm, and the staff is personable and helpful. We stayed in the Shasta Wintu, featuring a spacious, romantic open floorplan. It contains an enormous log bed, which was as comfy to sleep on as it was impressive to behold. The sheets and blankets were soft and we both slept well. The bedroom opens up into the bath area, with a large tub equipped with jets and a cool faucet resembling a fountain. There's also a separate, enclosed shower and water closet. With seating options galore, wonderful high ceilings and a scenic view of Mt. Shasta, it feels more like a private cabin than a hotel room. The common area includes a clean, well-equipped kitchen with fridge, board games and plenty of seating around a small wood burning stove. Downstairs, a variety of neat shops and restaurants round out an altogether impressive and inclusive stay.

Yelp
This is such a wonderful hotel, run by good people and priced surprisingly well. After my father (a 20+ year resident of McCloud) passed away recently, my family has made three back-to-back trips to McCloud to settle his affairs. On all three trips we've stayed in different rooms of the Mercantile Hotel, in groups ranging from two people (in the "Grandma's Attic" room) up to 5 (in the "Railroad Room"). The building is a wonderful mix of historic and modern, with a toasty wood stove outside our door and relatively speedy free Wifi internet access. Also, some of the rooms include a massive "soaking tub," which was an enormous hit with my family. The owners / managers of the hotel are wonderful people, and went out of their way to accommodate our unusual requests and circumstances as we dealt with the loss in our family, and we'll always be grateful to them for this kindness. The fact that their hotel is wonderfully restored and appointed, and the fantastic White Mountain Cafe is right downstairs, is even more reason to keep doing business with the Mercantile Hotel. Seriously, it doesn't get much better than this, regardless of what size town you're in.

Yelp
My wife and I came here as a stop on our honeymoon. What a great place. The innkeepers, Kevin and Darlene are delightful hosts that made us feel welcomed and like members of the family. They provided us with maps of the area and suggestions on "must see" places. The store is stocked with wines and sodas as well as various trinkets and clothing items. We stayed in the Charles Miller room and had a beautiful view of Mt. Shasta from our bed. The room was well appointed and very comfortable. The whirlpool tub in the room was very relaxing and the bathroom with the walk in shower was huge. This is definitely a place that we will recommend and return to at least annually for a relaxing stay.

Yelp
My wife and had a great stay here--friendly staff, clean and **really** nice rooms. We'll definitely be back either on our way to or back from camping and hiking at Lassen and Shasta.

Yelp
This place is awesome. Not only r the rooms roomy & perfectly romantic, the food downstairs is scrumptious & all natural! The beds in the room are the most comfy I've had in any other hotel suite we've ever stayed in. Claw foot tub in the bedroom area plus a huge 2 headed shower in the bathroom is perfect! A must to try if u r in mc cloud!

Yelp
Very bad experience. I stayed at the McCloud Hotel for four years and had to stay here for the first time because Mc Cloud Hotel was booked. stayed in the Grandma room #206... Lets get to the point. 1) carpet spots dirty around the room. 2) air conditioner was thermostatically won't change to temperature I wanted. It's like preset. The room was dame cold set at 72 and won't go higher to shut off. Tried 7 times and was after 5 pm. and no one around. so I unpugged the unit 3) #206 is not a good room cause you can hear all the rudely tenants run up and down stairway 4) some light switches doesn't work at all and not sure where it is suppose to control 5) cigarettes buds under the vanity sink, which tells me they didn't clean it the place correctly. 6) black mold on caulking of bath tub edgings of tile to tub 7) exhaust fan doesn't work in the bathroom 8) a idiot man went down the hallway POUNDING on everyone door to find out who park the car wrong in front of the hotel wrong instead of knocking on the door politely to find out. All he want was to have the tenant park the car parallel instead at a 45 degree which everyone was parking that way when I arrived. They should spend some money and paint the parking lines so we would know how to park. I parked that way because seven other cars parked that way. I found out later, it was the owner or manager that acted that way. THERE IS NO NEED TO POUND ON THE DOOR!!! 9) No one was monitoring the store counter where we checked in, and I walked back and forth to the candy store and the merchantile store until someone showed up, which took over ten minutes. I saw the lady running back and forth from the candy store and the Merchantile store. Short handed? This is not made up review even though there a lot of higher rating. But I will never stay here again. Mc Cloud Hotel is a 5 stars and I stayed there for 4 years but unfortunately, they were booked and I though I would try the Merchantile. No more . The Mr. Owner need to handle things better than being rude. This is a for real review. I stayed there.

Yelp
A vacation can be just as much about the journey as the destination. Do yourself (and your vacation!) the favor and book your night here at the Mercantile Hotel and skip those grungy hotels on I-5. Only about a short 10 minute drive off of the 1-5, the McCloud Mercantile Hotel is located and a beautiful and scenic small town in a restored turn-of-the-century mining building and has a really wonderful atmosphere along with some of the coolest and nicest rooms you could possibly imagine; some of them are like sets to a movie! (We stayed in the Hot & Tot room, which was our favorite, and the Arts & Crafts room) Each room has its own key-card (which you pickup at the front door afterhours if arriving late), heating and air conditioning and there is a nice dinning area upstairs with a small kitchen (microwave, refrigerator, sink etc) to make/store food in. Breakfast is at the cafe downstairs (and the food was really good). The proprietors are really nice people, super helpful every time I talked to them and super friendly; that personal touch (helping with your stay and even recommending local fishing holes) is well worth the additional price to stay at place like this instead of a chain hotel on I-5... once you add the beautiful rooms and the wonderful atmosphere is worth every penny! Seriously, this place is awesome and we will always stay here now when making the dreaded I-5 drive. (Also they're super kid-friendly!)

Yelp
What a treat this place was! Darlene and staff took great care of me. The rooms were very nice and always warm and cozy. Small town hospitality was their greatest asset. Can't wait to go back. Thanks Darlene.

Yelp
We just stayed at the Mercantile for the second time, this past weekend. We decided after our trip last year that we wanted to make it a new tradition and come back every year! We stayed in the Shasta Wintu our first trip, which was booked this time, so we stayed in another room (Charles?), that was also very nice. Kevin and Darlene were very accommodating and friendly! We indulged in side-by-side massages in our room, that were absolutely FANTASTIC! We will absolutely be back next year!

Yelp
Cute cute cute!!! We're staying in the railroad room...it is huge! Also Very very clean and quaint! The bathtub is luxurious and all the soaps and lotions are high end. The sheets and bedding are so soft and comfy. I'm usually VERY picky about hotels...I would highly recommend this hotel!!!

Yelp
Romantic and rustically luxurious, this place is a winner for a getaway for a couple or someone looking for the quiet seclusion of a mountain town at the base of one of the most beautiful inactive volcanoes in the united states. Mc Cloud is located about 15 minutes outside Mt. Shasta (home to a great ski park and bustling town with shops and night life) which makes it perfect if you want to be close enough to the action without staying smack dab in the center of it. My husband and I stayed in a room with vaulted ceilings a 4-post bed and a clawfoot tub. It was like going back in time and was one of the best anniversary weekends we've ever had. If you like beer, take a 3 min car ride (or a bit of a walk) to the Siskiyou Brew Works, home to a wonderful couple who makes their own beer (amazing) and pizza (pretty good). You can't beat the campy atmosphere! Shops and friendly people to talk to are abundant in McCloud so don't worry about finding something to do! You're going to love it there!

Yelp
The Mercantile is a lovely place to stay in a wonderful part of the world. Each room is beautifully remodeled, very comfortable and a great value. Darlene and Kevin are kind and friendly hosts and my friends and family had a wonderful time using it as our base of operations for our Cross-Country skiing adventures on Shasta last week. The breakfasts were very generous, giving us a great start on each day, and sitting around the wood stove in the lounge, or settling into the jacuzzi tubs made for great endings, too.

Yelp
This place does vintage with style, without feeling dusty and tacky. A warm and friendly ambience, well appointed rooms, fluffy towels and good products. Staff are friendly and helpful. Would stay again and recommend.
