Freeport McDonald's – Freeport, Maine - Gastro Obscura

"The year was 1984. McDonald’s was looking to build a location in the town of Freeport, Maine. There was only one problem: The Freeport building design restrictions were strict, and the town wanted the fast-food giant to maintain the area’s aesthetic. In other words: No golden arches. McDonald’s solution? Remodel an existing structure. They chose the Gore House, built by a wealthy local merchant, William Gore, around 1850. The town was split on whether to let the fast-food chain do this, but ultimately gave the go-ahead. It opened in December of 1984. The restaurant retained its style, which the Freeport Historical Society describes as “a mix of Greek Revival and Italianate architecture.” One could walk in and think that this was just a local posh tavern, like the one across the street. However, this restaurant doesn’t serve fine steak and craft beer; it serves Big Macs and Coca-Cola. While it is not the only literal McMansion in the United States (there’s another in New Hyde Park, New York), it is nonetheless unusual. Know Before You Go The McDonald's is located north of the main shopping area of Freeport, on the corner of Main Street (U.S. Route 1) and Mallett Drive (Maine Routes 125 and 136, connection to I-295). Take Exit 22 off I-295. Turn right, and the restaurant should be not far down the road on the right." - Collector of Experiences, bendboy, Sharoncappuccino, Cheryllion

This has to be one of the most famous McDonald’s in the world located at the end of the strip of the main street in Freeport. If you want to take a picture just cross the street that’s what most people do the reason it’s so famous is because it looks like it’s someone’s house. We usually use the drive-through and the orders have always been perfect. They have a large drive-through and plenty of parking it’s accessible and they have a bathroom. I’ve never waited in the drive-through more than a few minutes.

Stopped by a the other day and got breakfast. Ordered a breakfast sandwich that was supposed to come with cheese and it did not. Had some free time to call him this morning and ask for a remake of the sandwich and they gave me a hard time about it saying that I would have to file a formal complaint with them. Which made absolutely no sense because that’s exactly what I was doing. If you like your order being made correctly and want good service after someone makes a mistake dont count on this location.

First visit early May 2024 after 9 PM. Tables seemed to not be completely cleaned. Bathroom seemed decent. Food came out quickly. Kiosk seemed to take too long to get through all the screens.

7 36 PM - July 20, 2025 --> I never leave reviews, but the staff here were absoloutley ON IT. Beyond everyone being super-friendly, and quick, the way the staff and managers were all communicating was really cool to see. Mangers, you guys were doing amazing. Workers, you were on it, and getting that shit done. 💯💯💯

Google
very nice building but my goodness the parking lot and drive thru area are way too confusing if your not familiar with it. my first time here it was way too chaotic outside. went inside to use kiosk. it wouldn't load my deals on any of the kiosks after trying multiple times so I ended up leaving. but I enjoy the building how it looks compared to other McDonald's that's nice

Very disappointed with the Hot Fudge sundae I had last night! Paid $5.00 for it with extra hot fudge. Take a look at the picture I took.

We saw this place on our way to LL beans and literally took a double take! It just looks like a normal house, but a MacDonald, so cool! The inside is like a normal house too!! But no, they don’t sell lobster roll anymore. Still a cool experience though, we got a large fries, which is super fresh and a strawberry milkshake, normal McDonald foods.

Google
This McDonald’s exceeded my expectations. As we were driving here, we almost missed the building because it does not look like your average McDonalds. Built inside an 1850s home, this McDonald’s had an ambiance that made me feel like I was having breakfast with Paul Revere himself. The restaurant was clean, and the workers were pleasant and welcoming. The music was liberatingly refreshing. Food was consistent as expected. Overall an enchanting New England experience. Would recommend.

Yelp
When out of our way to experience the famous McDonald's with the farmhouse dining room and they had it closed. We had to sit in the very uncomfortable plastic seats. Whats the point of having something they don't even use? I guess they wanna make it like all the other corporate cookie's

Yelp
This is one of the fanciest, if not the fanciest McDonald's I've ever been to. I was also served by one of the nicest employees of any McDonald's ever. I normally don't feel compelled to write reviews for fast food but this was unique. Ironically I think I received the first burned nuggs ever in all my years downing them, but the experience of having somebody nice versus someone chucking a bag at your car overshadowed that point.

Yelp
Ordered my food it was not busy waited 10 minutes for 2 hash browns egg biscuit and egg McMuffin . Manager came out with wrong order . I politely asked her for correct order she actually ignored me . What a snotty arrogant teaching her coworkers to act the same . Egg biscuit does not take much to make . Lady you don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure that out . This is McDonald's! You came to work in a dirty uniform your hair was messy at least look presentable to the customers . While I was standing there her little boy staff yelled we are out of biscuits. Ya ok I won't ask for a refund keep your $3 . It's on me ugly lady with bad attitude.

Yelp
One of the few McDonald's that always has the sugar free vanilla flavoring for your coffee. I love their iced coffee. 99 cents for one per day on the app. Redecorated interior. Can order from kiosks or cashier or drive through or on your app. The app has many coupons you can use.

Yelp
Can't believe they don't have lobster... had to settle for a filet o fish. A whole trip wasted...

Yelp
We hadn't been to this McDonald's for years. Our plan was to enjoy a cheeseburger and sit in the front room. If you haven't been to the Freeport McDonald's make a point to visit. This McDonald's is in an old beautiful house. You might pass it if you're looking for the Golden Arches. We were sad but understood the room was closed because of staffing issues. The counter staff were very busy and trying to keep up with all the orders. We hope the next time we visit the front room will be open so we can enjoy the beauty of this room.

Yelp
Coke here for one reason only. The building is adorable! The McDonalds is built into an old historic home and there isn't any huge signage or Golden Arches like most have. There is a drive though and full ordering inside. It's like having lunch in someone's home!.

Yelp
Five stars for fast food! We stopped one late night after work around 8:30. We were starving and cranky and the staff made everything all better for us. I know you're thinking, but it's McDonalds...yes but the food was FRESH the QPC was so juicy! Yum!!! The fries were HOT!! Had to wait a bit before we could eat them. The staff was so friendly and polite. The drive thru is a bit funky as it wraps around the lot but there was no line, so it was all good. We ate our food in the car so I can't comment on the dining area. I will say the parking lot garbage receptacle was clean and empty so I could actually throw my food away. The parking lot and grounds were very clean and well maintained. If you or family are looking for a quick familiar bite to eat. I recommend this McDonalds.

Yelp
i walked in and i saw a man crying in pain from burning his hand because one of the machines spat flames on him. i then saw a dog pee in the corner and the employees just simply videoed and laughed. i then ordered a quarter pounder with cheese. it was pretty good. would come again.

Yelp
I'm from New York and I'm not accustomed to generally great service. Hands-down this is one of the nicest McDonald's I've ever been to. It's not the newest and the food is generally the same. But it is well run and everyone working there is very helpful. The lady tended to me and my wife and my little daughter and I couldn't be happier with the service.

Yelp
I really like this McDonald's I really like that it looks like an old house and it doesn't feel like a McDonalds or fast-food place. The tables are like what you would find in your kitchen. I mean the food is standard McDonald's food so it's not anything special but it's just nice and cute and a little town
google avatar

Baylee F.

Yelp
McChickens were tasteless, French fries had no salt! They also messed up on our sandwiches, so my husband went inside to tell them, and while he was standing at the counter he saw the employees throwing the sandwiches to be packaged.
google avatar

Mike K.

Yelp
is this a mcdonald's or a bed and breakfast? i'm not sure! they have a mcpick 2 for $5 AND a mcpick 2 for $2.50. on top of having a straight up value menu. i've NEVER seen that wide-array of value options in any mcdonald's.

Yelp
I would give a minus one star if possible. Can't believe they made iced tea in the coffee maker...yuck! Unsweetened for sure...lousy unacceptable after taste. Oh and they ran out of receipt paper so there was no way to give feedback direct to MCD. This franchisee should be scolded by management.

Yelp
It's such a cute little McDonald's. It looks exactly like a house and when you walk in you feel like your at someone's house. I will say they messed up my order but beside that it wasn't bad. I liked my food and I like the place a lot. It's super clean and very neat. The food was the same as all the others
google avatar

Tammy N.

Yelp
Super cool looking. More like someone's home than a mcdonalds. Service is quick and friendly. Also clean
google avatar

Yelp
This is my local McDonald's and I frequent it often. I have had a couple of issues before, but they have always taken care of such issues. I recommend them as a unique restaurant in that it is a mansion.
google avatar

Mindy L.

Yelp
I normally don't review fast food joints, but just have to comment that this particular McDonald's is quite lovely. I know it's only because of zoning laws in Freeport that demand they keep the historical architecture but still...it does make you feel a little bit better about eating more than a day's worth of calories in one sitting. It doesn't, however, mean that the chicken nuggets and french fries you just ate won't wreak havoc on your tender stomach lining 2 hours later. Yep...that will still happen! Enjoy!

Alyssa M.

Yelp
Quick, accurate order, and friendly! The woman at the window & the cashier were both nice. Great service, especially for 10pm on a Saturday night :)
google avatar

Chris F.

Yelp
The best looking Mcd's ever. Freeport noise laws made it so that you coudent get sound at drive through for years, Till now! Great for what it is. WI-Fi. When i was 16 I would sneak up the stairs to smoke with friends. I think its reserved for birthdays. Never seems to be used. Go up there for a private meal.
google avatar

Christopher S.

Yelp
Its McDonald what can I say however this McDonalds is the slowest and most disorganized I've ever been to. And don't go through the drive through. And some managers are unpleasant
google avatar

Stephanie K.

Yelp
they have NEVER getting my orders right. I have gotten egg shell in sandwiches, cold fries, and poorly put together sandwiches! this place SUCKS...even for the kids!

K I.

Yelp
This is probably one of the nicest McDonald's I've been to. After a recent shopping trip at LL Bean, we stopped by for a late snack/dinner. The building looks like a colonial house, and the dining room has "real" dining room chairs like the ones in homes, not the fast food restaurant type. The food is typical McD fare. We tried the new buttermilk chicken tenders with the signature sauce, which were pretty good.
google avatar

Jim D.

Yelp
Nicest Mcdonalds I've ever been in... the building is right across from the Harraseeket Inn, and the staff is incredibly friendly... it looks like they took an old colonial house and stuck a McDonald's inside.
