Denton House McDonald's – New Hyde Park, New York - Gastro Obscura

"The appellation McMansion could certainly be applied here. Long Island’s Denton House,  an 18th-century farmhouse that was converted into a Georgian-style mansion in the 1860s, houses perhaps the grandest McDonald’s restaurant on the planet. Built in 1795 as a family dwelling, the house served a variety of functions over the years, including a funeral home and a string of restaurants. The building, however, fell into disrepair in the latter half of the 20th century. In 1985, McDonald’s purchased the property and planned to raze the structure, but residents of the town and the surrounding area intervened, hoping to save the building from the wrecking ball. Under pressure from the preservationists, McDonald’s agreed to restore the home to its former grandeur in exchange for permission to build an addition for a drive-thru. And thus, the Denton House McDonald’s was born. One of the highlights of the restaurant is the home’s veranda, which serves as a dining area and is sealed in with glass panelling. Even the drive-thru is unobtrusive and in keeping with the home’s overall appearance. This McDonald’s stands as a testament to what can be accomplished when a town’s residents band together to preserve their shared history. None" - AVMD, bobm185, stephamie, Martin, Gerard Nolan, Rachel

If you’re going to eat McDonald’s, you might as well do it in a mansion. I’ve driven by the McDonald’s Mansion a few times over the years and finally decided to stop by and eat in. It’s an old converted house, complete with glass rotunda, bay windows, and an upstairs balcony area that’s unfortunately roped off and just for parties. Theres a framed photo of the original estate, along with a plaque with some of the details. There’s a ton of wood and columns with plenty of seating all around. There’s a 24 hour drive through, but if you’re coming here, I say eat inside. The food is standard with no specials or anything, and the service is too. Overall it’s a really unique location and absolutely worth a visit.

Google
Is this a McDonald’s or a mansion????? This place is incredible. I have never seen a classier Mickey Ds location in my life!!!! Wow words cannot even describe this place you need to see it for yourself. 🔥🔥🔥🔥

Google
We went there around 10pm and the closing time was 11. While we were eating the guy who works there was we are going to close in 10 min and when we checked the time it was 10:30. So we’re kind of rush to finish the food but the guy kept banging the chair while he’s cleaning the table and make us very uncomfortable ! But the McDonald building was nice and pretty!

Google
Didn’t expect for a Mc Donald’s to look like this but it was one of a kind. Service was like any other but the building its self is beautiful. Staff was nice, service fast and restaurant super clean. Lots of parking and well lit parking lot.

Suchitra Kamath

Google
This place is unlike any other McDonald’s with none of the typical colors. The place is like a converted mansion with great ambience.

Google
This is by far my favorite McDonald's. Aside from a converted mansion, it's super spacious and clean. They have both counter service and kiosk, but the best part is they even have table service. Yes the staff will bring your food over. Huge parking lot in a quiet neighborhood.

Patty C

Google
I liked it, food tastes like all the other McDonald's. Staff was friendly enough and there was someone always cleaning. It was cool being at a historic McDonald's, the place just needs some cosmetic touch ups.

Katie Stammer

Google
The food was average McDonald's but the building was amazing! Very bougie, clean, and unique atmosphere. The house is historic and the landscaping is professional. There's a traffic light at the entrance/exit. Lots of parking, but the exit does back up a bit due to the light.

Yelp
REALLY cool interior & exterior, like no other McDonald's truly. However, we were charged twice even thought we told them we had paid already, and the fries were not warm:/ Sad:/

Charles H.

Yelp
Ordered from here through Uber eats. Sandwiches and sauces were completely wrong. Ordered deluxe sandwiches that's supposed to come with lettuce, tomato, pickles, ketchup, etc. just got bun, meat and pickles on one. Bacon in the other (didn't order bacon). Not that difficult to get these orders right. Also, ordered hot mustard and they sent honey mustard.

Yelp
It's evident that I love abuse, I went to this McDonald's this morning and had a code for a 99 cents large coffee.. went thru the drive thru and the same woman is there. So I told her I had a mobile app number because she didn't ask like she's suppose to, I gave her the number and she said it's not going thru???? I said, ok, let me drive around...... with this she takes the code and says it's not going in??, I said well how is that my problem, in turn she says, it's not her problem either!!!! With that I said what I said and drove off!!! Let me ask you guys something? Are you guys that hard up that you put a miserable, Rude, obnoxious, annoying person like this at your drive thru window in mornings? She doesn't understand customer service or customer satisfaction!!! Your weekend person is a joy, but this person has no clue!!! How about get somebody else Ad ask them to put the code in!!! I will never go back in the mornings..you need to do something!! Otherwise Burger King is down the road!!!.

Yelp
The manager and the rude employee denied me access with a service dog after indicating several times I have my id while my dog sat by myside. The guy proceeded to wag his finger, pace back and forth, basically talking to himself. He refused to hear me say that I would like to show identification to the manager. He insisted that " the Spanish speaking managers don't understand English" and refused and said even if it is a service dog they are not allowed inside After embarrassing me in front of the entire staff, customers at McDonald's and causing mental distress, his manager came out to tell me to order but I had to leave because my dog was signaling and alerting me of mental distress so I had to leave because of the distress this man caused me This was the most unethical, illegal custom tee service experience

Yelp
You can not judge a book by its cover. Looks great outside but cramped seating and 2nd floor closed . Also everything is priced $1-$3 more than other McDonald's nearby. Service is quick but they do not bring food to your table even if you request it on the app .

Yelp
Built in the late 1920s, the beautiful McMansion had its 1st Yelp review 14 years ago.. This colonial style building is especially charming outside and has 2 floors of seating including a double staircases. McWedding anyone? It is McDonald's Restaurant #12000 as per the receipt. Apparently the landmark commission wouldn't allow McD to tear down this historic home. So it remains. An old photo by the cashiers says it was owned by the Denton Estate (like the namesake Denton Ave road). There are a few steps to walk into and out of the level where the kiosks and counter are to order, pay & pickup. Whole place feels roomy and clean, though the interior dark wall color seems too dark and stark for such a historic building. Love the round room with the glass walls and the bay windows. Located On the north side of the intersection of Jericho Turnpike and Nassau Terminal Rd (1 traffic light west of Denton Ave)

Yelp
yo I've been waiting for fuckin 20 minutes service is garbage as fuck manager do something better

Ivy L.

Yelp
I am an international student from Vietnam. Many of my friends from back home told me to go to this place since the decor is awesome and review to them. However, when I arrived, because McDonald in my country, we often order in the cashier table. But in here, people order through the board. I did not know how to order so I asked a guy worked in the cashier area and he helped me. However, when I got a tent to wait and they will bring in the table to me, nobody brought any food for me since I just order one ice cream and one coke. I had to wait for so long and still nobody brought anything and I had to come and asked them. The next table that is near me, they ordered nearly the same time and got the food with away and they ordered a lot of food. I feel horrible because I came to a new country and got treated differently. It makes my memory in New Hyde Park horrible and I live just near there, I live in Garden City.

Declynn K.

Yelp
Absolutely terrible! The staff yelled at my family of three, and gave us food that looked as if it had bites taken out of it. I ordered a cheese burger, my daughter ordered a six piece happy meal, and my husband got a McChicken all of which tasted DISGUSTING!
google avatar

Kevin C.

Yelp
The lady with the purple hair should be fired. She is a manager and continued to argue over a mishap with an order for the family in front of me in the drive thru. I literally heard this lady yell at the family demanding them to get out of the drive thru. I heard the man driving the vehicle say they had already paid using the app and then the manager continued to yell saying she doesn't work with the app. Incredibly unprofessional, this lady is making a mockery out of the management position and the company. Her ending statement to this family was "call the number on the window and say your spoke to the lady with the purple hair".... She was yelling this so loud I heard her clear as day. That is crazy ! 10/10 do not recommend

Ub C.

Yelp
The food and staff are amazing. My favorite McDonald's to visit in NY. Beautiful historic building. must see in person.

Noelle B.

Yelp
It was absolutely amazing, fast service as well as friendle servers. The food was delicious, and the drinks were as well. I 100% recommend.

Cool guy T.

Yelp
Really good McDonalds, the employees are one of the nice people you will ever meet, it's really clean and they bring the food to you while you sit at a table. Nicest McDonald's I've been to yet

Alexis W.

Yelp
The food is pretty good. The breakfast is disgusting. Good if you're in a rush. Staff looks bored. Chicken nuggets are good.
google avatar

Dominik D.

Yelp
Easily the most aesthetically pleasing exterior of any McDoanld's I've seen. It's on the west bound side of the Jericho Turnpike. It closes the storefront early, but has open drive thru until midnight.

Lone L.

Yelp
great service needs to be closed on holidays i mean come on workers their have family too ... they are not robots

Mike V.

Yelp
Check your bag at the drive thru always something missing interior is always messy dirty tables etc

Yelp
10/20/20 Order 1601 they forgot my 6 apple pies in the order. I noticed it by the time I came home. I should have checked earlier

Yelp
This McMansion is pretty clean. My DisBestie, Boocow, and I came here after a late-night errand run. She got herself a delicious Filet-O-fish meal with iced tea, which in her words were "questionably delicious". As for me, I redeemed my rewards for a large mocha McCafe frappe, with three espresso shots (yes, 3) to stretch my rewards milage (only drank half, as it was after 10pm). My frappe was made to order, and --surprisingly--the taste rivaled that of its competitor, the 'Bucks. Housekeeping staff ---which is what I would call them being at THE Mansion-- seem to be quite efficient, cleaning off every area in sections and blocking it off so it would stay clean for the night. The kiosks in the front worked for selecting your meals---up until you had to "get a tent number". The problem was there were no tents left on the stand (I guess the staff put the tents away after a certain hour at night, but don't tell the customers coming in?). Luckily, I used my app to order, which was also questionable if that made ordering food faster or not. I'd give this 3.5 stars, the rounding up comes from the ambiance (if you can call it that). Despite the hiccups, I'd consider coming here again, especially since I can chat with a friend late at night in a noshing nook where no one would bother us.

Yelp
The McMansion.....I'm lovin' it. Me and my friend Jeff often go here for some high quality food. The prices are steep and the coupons kinda stink, but hey if we got money to spend, this is where we go. The soda is always fresh. The fries are always hot, unless 2 times ago when mine were lukewarm. But I don't hold it against anybody....nobody is perfect and if they say they are, it means that they are lying, and nobody likes liars. But I digress. The food great. The Egg McMuffins are to die for. So good and easy and the egg is fresh. The Managers run a tight ship here. Once Jeff ordered, "I want like a #2, 2 Cheeseburgers." And the cashier rang it up for 2 orders of the #2 meal. Jeff just paid, didn't do the math that like $17 or $18 is too much for a meal. But hey, he always struggled with academics. Believe me, the school struggles now transferred to the workplace. When we got the order, Jeff noticed the mistake. And boy, did the manager throw a fit when we complained! We felt so bad for the young cashier, may he be golden wherever he is. Jeff did say it was good though.

Yelp
Terrible service for the older employees and younger ones is nicer a friendly. I hope older employees can learn with the younger ones
google avatar

Robert L.

Yelp
I really wanted to give it 5 stars but it just felt wrong given how unhealthy everyone tells me the food can be.

Chris N.

Yelp
Terrible Ordered one burger and it took them 20 minutes to respond Bad service Bad food
google avatar

Michael A.

Yelp
I'll start by saying that our food was typical McDonald's, so no problems there. Where the problems cropped up was their ability to handle curbside delivery. We put our space number in and waited for our food. A gentleman came within a few minutes and handed us two bags. Problem was it wasn't our order. I side I go and wait at least ten minutes for them to get my correct order. I. The meantime the same man tried to give my wife another wrong order while I was inside. Very poorly run McDonald's!
google avatar

Alex S.

Yelp
Very uh..."different" looking McDonalds. I doubt it's built like this in the City. Nice and clean. Good prepared food also. Other than that the only thing wrong is the traffic light to leave there. It's takes extremely forever to leave.
google avatar

Juju W.

Yelp
Large coffee is only a buck?! Can't beat that! And they accommodated my custom order of egg mcmuffin sans cheese. Fast drive thru, no complaints here today. Wish they served oatmeal without the brown sugar for those of us watching the glucose intake. If they did, I'd give them another star!
google avatar

Holly M.

Yelp
Always great service with the same employees. Love the McMansion. Take everyone there out of state. They love it. Just saw the turquoise arches in Arizona. Still New Hyde Park NY is the BEST.

Yelp
Wish I could give a 0 star. This McDonald's location is terrible, very bad customer service from the Manager Anna. The place is filthy & trash everywhere on the floor. I ordered a happy meal with cheese burger with no onion & no pickles. I got a 4 pieces chicken nugget instead. I told the manager Anna & the she handed me a burger with pickles & onions. She kept insisting I did not order that correctly on the app. She then resultantly handed me a hamburger with no cheese. I then asked her for a burger with cheese, she refused to give it to me unless I paid an additional $1 which I did. I then realized it was the same price on the app $4.59 with or without cheese. I want to her again to Inquire about it not because of $1 but they way she treated us. She then again being annoyed and showed me the price difference on her screen $4,59 (with no cheese) and $4.89 (with cheese). I asked her why you charged me a $1 then. She just ignored me. Very bad service especially from a manager. I will never come to this filthy McDonald's location again.
google avatar

Mike C.

Yelp
If you really feel like you need to eat McDonald's for some reason, then make sure you come to this one so you can tell people you've been to the fanciest McDonald's in America. Other reasons to come to this one include the extremely nice and friendly staff, which is completely unheard of in NYC, and the fact that they give you free refills on soda. McDonald's fries have been, and always will be, some of the best ever, fast food joints and overpriced fancy restaurants included. Wait for a fresh batch to come out, and hate yourself as you zone out and eat every single crispy one within seconds. Also, those new mighty wings aren't terrible. This was good for my one McDonald's fix for every 10 years, see you in another decade.

Yelp
Whoah. Is that a McDonalds in a mansion? I didn't even want McDonalds until we drove by this location and then I screamed, we must check it out! The parking lot was pretty full when we pulled in (I'm guessing a pretty popular location) and so we found parking on the side. When we walked in, the place looks like the interior of the house (a pretty house that is) with seating on the sides with loads of lighting. The cashier was on the left of the house. There was no line when I was there and I ordered soft serve in a cone. I didn't really look at the menu but my boyfriend pointed out to me they had mozzarella sticks (I wished I saw that because I would want to try that) and I'm guessing their dollar menu is a bit limited. After I ordered my soft serve, I gave them my credit card without them asking for it and later found out that a soft serve in a cone here is $1.29. Other locations I've been to have the soft serve on their dollar menu so I was a bit surprised when I saw that it was not a dollar here. I'm not sure if all their prices are a bit higher but their soft serve is. Would I come here again? Meh. A McDonalds is a McDonalds and after seeing this location once, I don't feel the need to come here again.

Yelp
I had been craving a Big Mac after seeing the President eat one on his plane. I searched "best McDonalds NYC," and this unique location came up in the search. It looked cool from the photos of the outside so if I was going to choose to go to a McD's why not go to the best? This former mansion is cool from the outside, but that's where it stops. I pulled into the parking lot to find a car just randomly stopped in the middle of the entrance lane, and lots of beat up garbage cars parked out front. Indepedence, Ohio has a beautiful two story McDonalds that is very fancy, and after walking into this location, Indepedence is by far the better specialty restaurant. This location was old and beat up on the interior. Dirty, uncomfortable lighting, beat up ceiling tiles, just a bad experience. Ordering was a challenge. A woman cut me in line but I let it go. The cashier was bad, her coworkers even worse. One called the wrong order number and my order went to an unsuspecting kid. He realized their error and handed me the bag admitting he already ate a few fries. Thankfully the cashier realized her coworker's error and had them remake both my order and the kid's order. Location clearly not worth the drive. I'd have had a better chance finding a cleaner, more modern location closer to the city than hiking out to this restaurant purely for it's crumbling infrastructure and old fashioned charm. Big Mac was pretty damn good. Fries were nasty in a good way. Coke mix didn't taste right.
google avatar

Yanis C.

Yelp
The location is beautiful, I have never seen such a unique McDonalds. I have come here a few times and it seems like there is always an issue. I ordered 2 little cheeseburgers, they charged for cheeseburgers and gave me hamburgers, they get my Mc Cafe order wrong like 80% of the time, but it's a McDonalds what can you really expect? But, the last time I came here I felt really offended. I had an in-app coupon for a buy one Mc Cafe drink get one free, when it was time to scan my coupon and pay the coupon was not going through. So the cashier calls her manager and proceeds to tell her in Hindi that I was trying to con them out of a drink and that she didn't know how I was getting these "fake" coupons to appear on my app. The manager honored the coupon, but it's really terrible to say such things jn front of a customer.

Sharon S.

Yelp
AVOID THIS MCDONALDS DRIVE THROUGH!!! There's a low concrete pillar you cannot see from an SUV. On Saturday, the first window was open to take payment (which is usually not the case). To hand my credit card over, I drove close to the window. I drive an SUV and they have a short concrete pillar on the ground by the left side of the window which you cannot see from that height. As I straightened out my steering wheel to drive to the second window, my bumper (of my new car!) hit the pillar causing damage that I'm going to have to deal with tomorrow. For this under $10 meal, I'm likely to spend up to $1000 on repairs!!! It feels like the owner has no concern for his or her customers. Btw, before I could see the damage, the person handing me the food said,"Don't worry about it,"and laughed a little. It was like she had seen this happen before. So, I'm sending out this warning to others...
google avatar

Kevin F.

Yelp
Have you seen the pictures of this place? If you have, you should have already been here by now. It's typical McDonald's food. The same food you could get at any one of millions of McDonald's around the world. But that's not why you come here. Heck, don't even order anything while you're here. Stand back and admire the historic architecture of the Denton House. Take a few pictures. Maybe even some selfies. This place is a landmark.
google avatar

Liz K.

Yelp
- First mistake, no apple pie -2nd, don't yell at me over a big mac -3rd, you gave my meal to the car in front of me. - How the hell does McDonalds run out of ketchup? -The cake topper: no straw.
google avatar

Emmie H.

Yelp
Perhaps one of the prettiest McDonald's you would ever see. Staffs are nice and carrying my order to my table too. Worth a visit for both outside and inside interior.
google avatar

Yelp
I would give ZERO stars to this location if I could. Absolutely horrible experience with this McDonalds. Not even Corporate could get them to resolve the issue. This McDonald's shorts orders coming through the drive-thru on a consistent basis. They have gotten my order wrong 3 out of the last 4 times I went there. The latest...if you order a 20 piece Chicken McNuggets, they will give you 16 in the hope you don't notice. When this happened to me, I contacted the store who would do nothing other than give a phone number to their franchise office. At the franchise office, a very rude, condescending woman asked for my address. My assumption was that they would replace the order on my next visit. Instead, she sent me a check for something like 17 cents. It's very obvious what she was trying to do. The check was her way of saying I was being petty. Frankly, I have better things to do with my time but it was the principal. Their attitude was awful. I contacted Corporate on three occasions to file a complaint and they told me they couldn't get the franchise office to answer their inquiries. Horrible McDonald's location that depends on the building's historic charm and location for customers. Never ever again.

Yelp
If you are unfortunate to go to this McDonald's do not I repeat do not try to get any help from a manager her name is SalimaShe thinks that she owns this McDonald's she will not rectify a problem she will not help you in anyway so if you can go to a different McDonald's go
google avatar

Erin N.

Yelp
Both stars are for the aesthetics of this McDonalds. Zero stars for food and service. Been here quite a few times since it opened, but the last time I visited, the food we were served was not hot or fresh. In particular, this location was testing mozzarella sticks at the time, so I ordered some. They felt and tasted like they had been sitting under the heat lamp for quite some time, terrible. My other big complaint was, the self serve condiment station was almost completely bare forcing customers to have to ask at the counter for just about everything besides ketchup. It's really sad that they don't even try to live up to their "McMansion" nick name.
google avatar

Julia L.

Yelp
No different than any other McDonald except they have the worst customer service. Plenty of people just standing around not helping customers. Tried to purchase happy meal toys to finish a collection and they refused to sell us the toys. They stated that the only way to get the toys was by purchasing a full happy meal and then continues to say that happy meals aren't served till 11, so we were even allowed to purchase them. How ridiculous! All other McDonalds allows you to purchase the toy without the meal. We are offering to give money to your establishment and you still refuse service. And on top of all that, the server claimed that the manager makes this a rule and she was too cowardly to come out from behind the wall to even speak to us. I'm beyond disappointed.
google avatar

Howard L.

Yelp
I mean, it's a typical McDonald's that happens to be inside a fancy looking building. You can find the story about the building if you look up "Denton House (New York)" on wikipedia. It's kinda boring and kinda pathetic to be honest.
google avatar

Michelle K.

Yelp
I received the following PM from Mike M. and added a picture in the review that was included, how awesome this is!! "Was just surfing and came across your McDonalds visit. That resturant at one time was our family home. It was an Italian Resturant owned by our family back in the 40's, then leased out to others for some time until the mid 80's. My bedroom use to be upstairs on the left, front. Such good memories whenever I go back to visit. The cooking area use to be the bar and kitchen area. Thanks for the nice write up."
google avatar

Franco C.

Yelp
Ok, the structure is nice- used to be the Denton homestead. That aside, they have some issues with the employees not being able to fill orders correctly. I eat here now and again and it always seems to be a battle when you are at the drivethru - #8 with a large coffee? I get #8 and large and small coffee- no, no I just wanted a large coffee. Large coke? no coffee! Large coke? grrrrr After that is settled, I get to the window and ask for salsa for the #8 burritos. Salsa please. Salsa? What is salsa?! Salsa - for the burritos. The girl is looking at me like I have just asked her for her virginity! So, amazingly enough, I say it in Spanish to her and DING - the light goes on and she produces: salsa. I dunno maybe I said it wrong the first 3 times? This has happened too many times in the past as well - even when I park and go in there always seems to be some mother battling with the person behind the counter who does not have a firm grasp of the language. Other than that it is a McDonalds with all that goes along with being a McDonalds.

Yelp
"The landmark commission wouldn't let them tear down the historic mansion they purchased, so they restored the outside and converted the inside to a fast food restaurant." Holy shit. I will never eat here, and I don't think anyone else should (C'mon...you're eating chicken toes and grease. Get over your denial), but if this isn't the classiest looking McDonald's I've ever set eyes on, I'll be damned. It's not an eatery, it's a tourist attraction. I was half expecting a Colonel in a white pressed suit and bow tie to stroll out, snacking on a Big Mac. Five Stars for style and architectural sex appeal.
google avatar

Dana R.

Yelp
Going to give this place four stars because of the cool venue. Awesome landmark location that caught my eye right away. Eating McDonald's at the Denton house? Awesome. Simply awesome. Places like this should be more popular. Had a big breakfast and it was yummy as per usual. Taste's better than it is for you that's for damn sure. I had to stop here after riding by, I could not pass it up for the life of me. I didn't even know what door to enter because the house from the outside looks so amazing.
google avatar

Justin V.

Yelp
A pretty normal McDonalds outside of it being a mansion... a McMansion. Just make sure that if you're going through the drive through to keep your receipt and double check that they gave you what you've ordered. Ordering nuggets and fries at night usually get you pretty stale food.
google avatar

Yelp
I typically don't review chain restaurants, let alone chain businesses in general, but on rare occasion certain businesses stick out like a sore thumb. Now this is McDonald's; everybody knows about McDonald's. I'm a little confused as to what to rate this place. I came with the intention of actually giving this location about four stars because it's a very unique McDonald's. Upstairs (yes there are two floors) there is a gorgeously, just short of tacky, decorated space-themed party room available for birthday parties for children. I just think it's so cool looking (again brings me back to my childhood days). I've been coming to this McDonald's for yearssssss. McDonald's was always a treat for me. My grandma would take me here and we would sit in the booths (the ones you see upon entering). Now today I come here and the Indian lady (yes it seems to only be here) FUCKS up my order every single time. On the rare occasion me and my co-worker slide in there, we obviously go with the intention of fulfilling all of our other co-workers orders. We make shit easy. We do separate bills WITH separate money; what could be so hard about that. Multiple times she leaves shit out of the order and just "forgets" to give it to us. Were usually running on 15 minutes. We don't have time to go through everything, it should just BE THERE. Anyways I and WE have stopped coming here...it's not worth the hassle. If I have kids some day, I hope this place still stands so I can take them upstairs to the party room. The whole ambience of this McDonald's is really something genuine, but sambhar the service sucks!

Yelp
Pretty cool McDonald's. It gets stars for being different. Sure it's strange, and sure, a mansion shouldn't become a McDonald's but hey it made the experience of eating McDonald's a bit more interesting. The only problem to me, is that the area by the windows is a bit chilly other than that, I had good experience here, the service was good and I'll probably stop by here if I'm in the area with a craving for McDonald's again.
