10 Massively Inedible Roadside Attractions

"After a lifetime building his New Mexico pistachio farm, also known as PistachioLand, Alamogordo nut salesman Tom McGinn was memorialized with a roadside advertisement that now draws tourists from all over the country. The World’s Largest Pistachio stands 30-feet tall and was constructed using over five yards of concrete and 35 gallons of paint to give the enormous green nut a strangely real look. Like many oversized items littering the world’s highways, the pistachio is there mainly to lure motorists into the McGinn’s Pistachio Tree Ranch and Winery Gift Shop. Unsurprisingly, there are a number of exotic, pistachio-based products for sale like chili-chocolate pistachio brittle and homemade pistachio milkshakes– although nothing is as priceless as taking a “nutty” photo under the giant snack." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Google
Where to begin?? Loved this place. They had the best tasting pistachios I’ve ever had, loved all the fun items for purchase and pistachio fresh made ice cream I’ve ever had. The large pistachio is fun to see in person and the tour was informative. Emilio was a lively and engaging tour guide that was knowledgeable. The tour was on a large golf cart and you didn’t get off but lots of stops to look at things and learn about the farming, history, and trees. The tour was $4 a piece at the check out with a waiver to fill out. So glad I got to experience this place! The ice cream had whole pistachios in it and homemade waffle cups that went so well together.

Google
This place is so cool. I road tripped through the southern half of New Mexico, and this was without a doubt my favorite stop. Such a unique shop! There are lots of pistachio flavors you can try - FOR FREE. We ended up skipping lunch and just snacked on pistachios! There is a gift shop, wine tasting, pistachio tasting, tree orchards, and tour of the property. You can also see the world’s largest pistachio! It was a special little stop that we all thoroughly enjoyed.

Dan Pieloch

Google
This place is fun, but what impressed me most was the friendliness and willingness to help from the people working here. Amelia on the tour, and Amanda at the wine bar, made us feel at home. But honestly everybody here was so nice. And they went out of their way to ask if we were eligible for the military discount (we are), so that was also a nice touch. If you can't find something you like at the well stocked gift shop, you're not trying hard enough. They had free samples too! And the pistachio ice cream was solid. Take the tour, get some wine samples, and enjoy your day.

Google
Such a amazing experience! Amelia tour guide was fun and knowledgeable. We enjoyed ice cream especially the home-made . We did shop over $100 which gave us complimentary gift . Do visit farm ! Its nutty and tasty ! A super fun family day

Google
Go early, avoid the crowds. Visit the world’s largest pistachio. They have every kind of pistachio flavor could want. Ice cream starts at 10am. They also have fudge. Very cool store as well. I didn’t have time to take a tour, but I bet it would be cool. Def worth the stop.

Petra Kubalkova

Google
Large choice of different pistachios varieties (sweet, salted, lime, garlic etc.), possible tasting before shopping. And awesome ice cream. Very pleasant shop assistant. Happy to recommend 😊

Google
Pistachio Land was a fun place to visit and spend some time on a beautiful afternoon. We bought homemade ice cream (the Pistachio ice cream is fantastic), went on the tour, sampled several wines and different flavors of pistachios, and perused the gift shop. The tour was very informative, and we learned a lot about the growing process and the trees themselves. Our tour guide Amelia did a great job. The tour is $4 a person, but welll worth it, especially considering the free samples at the gift shop. Note: There is another pistachio stand/ wine shop on Hwy 54 before Pistachio Land. Look for the giant pistachio, and you will be at the right place.

Michael Spinler

Google
Great place, lots of stuff inside the store. Everything was reasonably priced, pistachios had a huge selection, whilst they seem expensive, pistachios are generally costly, the ice cream was inexpensive, with large servings, and there was little to no way to get the ice cream.

Amanda K.

Yelp
Well worth the stop!!! Pistachioland is such a gem. Great products, great gifts, great atmosphere, and Tiffany is incredible. The store has tons of free samples, so you'll have a chance to try the wide range of roasted pistachio flavors before you buy. The pistachio ice cream is a MUST. So, so delicious, and the perfect pick-me-up on a hot desert day. Tiffany gave us such a warm welcome, let us sample many flavors, and even took pictures of us by the Alamogordo landmark sign. You won't regret stopping by!

Peter K.

Yelp
Visited here on a road trip with my family of 5 back in 2024. We had an awesome time. We love World's Largest attractions and have visited a lot of them. This one was extremely well done. We had a great tour of the farm and learned a lot. Our tour guide was awesome. Shout out to Emilio! Hope you're doing well. Thanks for the great time. We also bought wine and ice cream and everything was terrific!

Yelp
Pistachio land is a must visit, one of the best road stops in southern New Mexico. They have all kinds of goodies, including some of the best ice cream around. They serve bluebell, but they also have a few flavors that are their own in house made. I really loved the pineapple one, but of course the pistachio is also very good. They have a huge selection of different treats, including really good pistachio brittle. Additionally, of course they have the giant pistachio outside that you just have to take a picture with. This is one of those little road side attractions that is always worth a stop.
google avatar

Gina L.

Yelp
Quite gimmicky, but had to stop by anyway. They have many free pistachio samples available (enjoyed the spicy ranch and honey flavored ones). On my way out, I saw many people lined up for the free wine samples, but decided to pass. Waited in the long, but quickly-moving line for ice cream. Got a scoop of pistachio ice cream, which had a decent amount of pistachio halves. They say it's made in-house, and it's definitely artificially flavored and artificially colored. I an certain of the latter, since my messy self dripped some on my shirt, and attempting to wash it out resulted in a deep yellow stain :"( Didn't take a tour, but can book via Viator, or in-person at the checkout counter. Overall, worth a stop! The big pistachio is kinda fun to take a pic with. Definitely a great marketing strategy on their behalf.
google avatar

Nicole R.

Yelp
This is a fun roadside stop near White Sands NP! There's a grove of pistachio trees and a giant pistachio sculpture. There's a large store selling all sorts of flavored pistachios and you can sample the different flavors. We got a scoop of the pistachio ice cream and it was a large portion and tasted great!
google avatar

Sarah J.

Yelp
Amazing pistachio icecream! Just the right spot to stop after a day at White Sands. Yum! I recommend this place to all the travelers. It's just the right level of corny and goofy to make my kids laugh and me stop in.
google avatar

Joanna M.

Yelp
All souvenir shops are overpriced and $5 for a single chocolate covered pecan is atrocious. The big pistachio is gimmicky too but there are some interesting souvenirs here if you look closely. Some interesting goods include roadkill jerky, hatch chile hot sauces, prickly pear candies and different flavored pistachios grown straight from the farm. They have wine tastings which I didn't get to try and I was kinda annoyed because I left my wallet at the airbnb I was staying at and they refused me a small sample of wine even though I'm clearly of age. But what can you expect in the middle of nowhere in New Mexico. At least the bathrooms were decently clean and the place can double as a rest stop if you're on the move. The funny part is that my partner and I were at checkout and the girl at the counter gave us the military discount because our family (who are military) was on the premises. Our family came in anyway after realizing but it was funny how we got the discount but not the tiny samples of wine. I'm not complaining but make it make sense.
google avatar

Ino R.

Yelp
Chamber of Commerce Business of the Year, what!?! Fantastic stop with lots of things to try and taste. It's got all the free pistachios that you want to try. They got other snacks available for tasting, too. Liz wanted some wine. The kids wanted snacks. I was happy with their farm made ice cream. Lots of shaded seating outside, where you can sit and enjoy the people and your treat of choice. Eclectic stop.
google avatar

Melissa S.

Yelp
Super cute spot. 1980 they started the farm. I took the tour guide and it was cool to do for a first timer. They have tons of sampling inside, which I love since I don't want to buy anything I can't taste first. Wine tasting is FREE! You get 4 choices. We ended up buying the pistachio wine from them. Had to, right?! Pistachio ice cream is so good! They do have a check-in offer for two dollars for ice cream but they do not honor it. I repeat they do not honor the check in on Yelp. Overall, really cool spot to see and try and least once.
google avatar

Evelyn M.

Yelp
Well how can you not stop! Worlds largest pistachio! We tried the free wine tasting - pistachio was the best. Pistachio Samples are abundant on flavor options and candied- spicy dill pickle! Ice cream outside as well as a tour available. We did really like the onsite homemade pistachio ice cream - it's really good! Outdoor seating and porta potties available
google avatar

Linda O.

Yelp
Typical tourist trap but lots of "free" options made it a fun stop. Free wine tasting, free flavored pistachio tastings, free tours, free samples throughout. We tried to use the YELP coupon from check in ($2 ice cream)and were informed it was only valid at another location!! Not cool! The homemade pistachio ice cream was very good.
google avatar

Kristen H.

Yelp
Very cute and random pitstop on our way to other places, like the space museum. No regrets. Lots to offer and definitely sample some of the pistachios and take some home for friends. Garrett, thank you for being so kind at check out and giving amazing tips on how to use our fun finds!!!
google avatar

Karen D.

Yelp
Awesome place to spot on the way from ABQ to white sands or vice versa. They have a huge pistachio statue out front, so you can't miss it. There are lots of pistachio flavors to sample and buy. The store is quite large. I bought several bags as gifts. Their ice cream shop is right outside and the portions are extremely generous. I think the cone with pistachio and house made pumpkin equalled to over a pint. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Theresa L.

Yelp
Giant pistachio and pistachio ice cream, sign me up! They also have other ice cream flavors besides pistachio. I like that they had a waffle cup and waffle bowl. Waffle bowl looked huge so I opted for the waffle cup. They also have a gift shop where you can get different flavored pistachios.
google avatar

Elizabeth R.

Yelp
A favorite spot to stop at on our way from cloudcroft or a place to visit from El Paso. They have a pistachios novelty shop and wine tasting bar inside. You can also enjoy some pistachios ice cream outside while you wait on the guided tour of the property or just take in the sun next to the huge pistachio statue outside. The staff is very nice and helpful. Not to mention the free samples that help your choice of what to take home even harder!
google avatar

Shirley Y.

Yelp
So, what would you call a weekend in cloudcroft without stopping at PistachioLand? Is pistachio a nut or a seed? Or a fruit? So many questions.... It was Sunday. The parking lot was packed. The line to the ice cream was long. Inside the store, Netta made sure I get my pistachio brittle (yes, my favorite). And, chocolate pistachio bark, and hot pickles, and a Sasquatch patch for my rider vest. Oh, I sampled the wonderful fudge too. I settled for a chocolate sea salt caramel that is just divine. The tour guide accommodated my group and our motorcycles with a photo op in front of the giant pistachio. Whether you have business in the area or not, make it your business and go visit this place. Stuff your face with pistachios in so many flavors ! And then, I dare you come back to thank me!
google avatar

Kristy A.

Yelp
Had an amazing time!! Got to sample lots of different flavors pistachios. All were yummy! My favorite was the cinnamon. Came home with lots of goodies.

Yelp
Nut is Love Kitschy roadside attraction that celebrates all things Pistachio, and is located in the middle of a working pistachio grove and features the "World's Largest Pistachio." The Good: *If you're a lover of pistachios, then this is the place for you! All manners of pistachiocentric foods and souvenirs that one can imagine--and then some! *Employees are all friendly and helpful. *The aforementioned pistachio is indeed gigantic and def worth a stop, if just to take a photo and bounce. *Blue Bell® ice creams--but they'll also be producing their own ice creams soon! If they aren't already. *Highly recommend the tour; it's only $2 per, and you'll learn a lot about pistachios and the history of the farm. *Lots of other foods and souvenirs besides pistachio stuff. *Free just to pop in and visit. There's really no need to buy anything, really. The Meh: *Prices are a bit on the high side, but it's to be expected for this sort of thing. The Ugly: *Despite being in the middle of nowhere, it really is quite the popular attraction as it was quite packed on our visit. TLDR: Fun little roadside stop that can take you 30 seconds to 30 minutes, depending on your level of involvement. But, regardless of which it's still worth it.

Yelp
What a fun time great place to make a pitstop and enjoy everything pistachio and then some my kid my boyfriend we all found something to enjoy and eat. The staff was overly accommodating. You left the pistachios the pistachio brittle the fudge the wine tasting they even have tours we want to go back. It was a great place for kids great place for adults. Just come by and have a good time.
google avatar

Cecilia L.

Yelp
Great little pit stop before heading to the white sands. Pistachio farm tour is $3 for adults when you get it in person - Tara was very informative! And you can check in to get a bag of free pistachios! They also just started making their own pistachio ice cream a month ago after trialing 16 recipes!
google avatar

Krissy H.

Yelp
I am gonna say take the tour it's only $3 bucks, every hour on the hour and takes maybe 20 mins and Emilio rock it and it really shows he truly takes pride in what he does. He was very passionate about explaining everything to you. On our particular tour it was only two of us, and he went all out just like if he had a full group. I never knew they were so much to growing pistachios. It was very interesting. He also go through the wine vineyards on the tour and he touches on that as well. Gift shop is pretty big pistachio, tasters, winetasters, and ice cream outside, who doesn't love that? So glad we stopped..

James Y.

Yelp
This place is a must see. There is a great tour to learn all about the farm and the ice cream is the best I've had. Great gift shop with unique items. Worth the time to stop!
google avatar

Caylen C.

Yelp
We're in El Paso & take the 2hr drive whenever we want some good pistachio ice cream!! Brought my parents here when they visited & they loved it as well. They took bags of pistachio home lol
google avatar

Delani S.

Yelp
We really enjoyed our tour with Emilio! He was very knowledgeable about the whole growing process and very enthusiastic. I highly recommend trying to get a tour when he's working :)
google avatar

Kris C.

Yelp
Such a silly and fun spot to check out!! Ok ok, one of my top nuts to consume is pistachio, and one of my favorite ice cream flavors is pistachio, so I HAAAD to stop by! They have quite the selection of flavors too, so if you're not feelin pistachio that day then there's options for you. The general store is great-- they sell all kinds of souvenirs, pistachio-related or not, and of course all their different flavored pistachios in convenient sized bags to take away. I appreciated all the samples that we can try-- my favorite was the garlic! Also may have gotten a pistachio stress ball for my doggo... tehee. If we had more time, I would've considered doing the tour! Would have loved to see the pistachio farm! Friendly staff! They also give military discount which we appreciated! Oh, we also had fun posing next to the giant ass pistachio at the front!!
google avatar

Bruce K.

Yelp
You sure can't miss the largest pistachio in the world, bright green and standing there like some sort of alien landing craft. Yeah, I have aliens on the mind after coming from the UFO Museum https://www.yelp.com/biz/international-ufo-museum-and-research-center-roswell?hrid=r6JOrX7UAuVzcnusN-VAWg in Roswell this morning. I'm a sucker for advertising and repeating billboards so I didn't have any choice but to stop here and check it out. More pistachios than you can shake a stick at. Different flavors and different stuff they've done with them. I really appreciated the opportunity to taste over a dozen different kinds before ending up purchasing three different bags. The cocoa, habanero limon and green chili went home with me today. A fridge magnet too of course. Yes, it's a little bit of a tourist trap but it's a lot more than that. There are actually things to see here and you shouldn't feel obligated to spend money. But I'm sure that you will. This is pretty neat. [Review 17468 overall - 78 in New Mexico - 986 of 2022.]

Linda S.

Yelp
Lots of free tasting samples. Delicious ! And prices better than other stores. Also, BlueBell ice cream for sale. Yummy!
google avatar

Ana S.

Yelp
It was amazing. We went to New Mexico Las Cruces. What a beautiful state. Love the little trip we took to see and how they grow pistachios. It hot but a dry heat. We from California. You will love it
google avatar

Erica G.

Yelp
Great weekend trip. We decided to stop at PistachioLand. We decided to take the tour and Tara was very knowledgeable about pistachios and wine making. I recommend doing the tour while Tara is the guide, she is friendly and enthusiastic! After the tour we decided to go inside the store to get some pistachios (garlic, pickle, lemon flavor, pistachio brittle, Wine ( Sweet Clarisa and pomegranate), and chicharrones (sour cream and onion, ranch, and buttery). For the wine, they have member exclusive deals. We received a 10% for buying two bottle of wines, they offer more discounts. The store is clean and packed of many tourists and they also have other souvenirs like magnets, tiles, clothing, salsa, candy, and much more. We finished off the day with some of the best homemade ice cream I have ever had! I recommend visiting and taking the kiddos they will love it.
google avatar

Britt C.

Yelp
This is a great place to stop if you like Quirky things like we do. We weren't going to go in the store but my son saw ice cream. The store is huge and the prices are high. If you check in with yelp you will get a 4 oz bag of pistachios and you can pick the flavor. You have to spend $15 to get it. I wouldn't bother with the ice cream it's nothing special it's Blue Bell just the cheap ice cream you get at the grocery store. If you are hot in the NM sun I guess it wouldn't matter it would still be refreshing.
google avatar

Sheri B.

Yelp
Great place to get pistachios with lots of flavors and souvenirs! They also have some unique gifts that are fun and a tour of the pistachios!
google avatar

Lauren S.

Yelp
Between the store, the winery, the giant pistachio, and the great ice cream, this is a fun place to stop! When you arrive, parking is very well marked. The store has pistachios you can taste out of turn machines with peanut brittle and honey samples as well. My favorite part of the trip was my wine tasting with Nakita. I recommend the sweet Clarise! We tried the ice cream and ordered a couple different items. They have floats, italian cream sodas, and scoops of ice cream. The bathrooms are very limited as I only found one with two stalls. The tour looked fun, but was full taking off. It's a cute place!
google avatar

Francine L.

Yelp
Found this place on Yelp and decided to stop here after eating lunch to get some pistachios. You really can't miss this place because they have a large pistachios statue outside! While walking in there is a nice lady that gave us some free samples to try some of their new flavors. After that, we decided to look around and buy a ton of different pistachio flavors. I mainly gave this as gifts and it's semi-healthy and who doesn't love pistachios? They have different sizes for the amount so you can buy large bags or small sizes it's up to you. After spending a certain amount we for a small pisatchio globe that has the pistachio statue inside and also the state where we got it from. It's pretty cute and I still have it in my room.
google avatar

Brooke B.

Yelp
Such a fun place to stop in Alamogordo! Ice cream is great and the pistachio statue is really cool!
google avatar

Tony R.

Yelp
More than just pistachios. There is a free tasting of wines with options to purchase bottles. The grapes are grown on property and wines are produced there too. Free samples of their different flavored pistachio along with gift shop, tours of the farm and best of all, homemade pistachio ice cream.

Missael S.

Yelp
0 stars. Do NOT come here if you're a person of color. They WILL ignore you & act like you're not there. The staff in the ice cream shop were kind but the employees inside of the store were a completely different story. Ice cream was good but you could get the same at Walmart. Hope y'all fix this.
google avatar

John H.

Yelp
If you're in the area, it's one of those places you have to visit just because it's there. Same genre as Wall Drug, SD or the largest ball of twine. Lots of pistachio varieties to purchase inside. Green Chile, garlic, extra saltyt, etc.

Ashley B.

Yelp
Very large selection of flavored pistachios. There is an area where you can try free samples so you can decide what to buy. They have a lot of souvenirs. You have to get some of the pistachio ice cream. OMG, it was so good.
google avatar

Sammie R.

Yelp
It was a nice little place to stop. We looked around the gift shop and then got ice cream (pistachio of course). The women's bathroom needed work. It was very small for the size of business and the sink was draining directly on to the floor in the bathroom.
google avatar

Tiam L.

Yelp
While on our way to Roswell, we saw several signs and the huge Pistachio itself that greets you at Pistachio Land. We thought to ourselves well that's funny. But on our way back and before we stopped at the White Sands Monument, we figured let's see what this place is talking about. So glad we stopped! The pistachio ice cream is amazing. They make it on site. The pistachios in the ice cream really makes it tasty. They have several other flavors on the menu as well that are Blue Bell. They also offer tours every hour on the hour. And the shop inside is huge. We ended up arriving at the last hour that they were open. So we didn't get to do the tour or see as much of the shop as we wanted to. So if you want to experience it all, then definitely visit earlier in the day.
google avatar

Bailey R.

Yelp
I FINALLY got to see one of the "World's Largest....{fill in the blank}" like you see on all of the road trip themed movies. My boyfriend and I went on a road trip from Houston to New Mexico for my birthday and I haven't been on one until this trip.. So as soon as we heard about the World's Largest Pistachio, we just HAD to stop by and be those annoying tourists. They actually had some awesome postcards for sale in the store (I purchase postcards on every trip so finding great ones here was a bonus) and they even let you try the flavored pistachios before you buy a whole bag. The ice cream they serve is blue bell and was a nice little treat before heading to our AirBnB to get ready to visit White Sands National Park. P.S. Be sure to try the spicy ranch pistachios! They were incredible!
google avatar

Nicole W.

Yelp
Saw billboards for this bad boy all the way in Autsin and drove through just to see it! It was big, it was green, and the ice cream was delicious!! As well as their signature pistachio ice cream, they offer plenty of other flavors like vanilla, chocolate, and my new favorite Little Debbie Cream Pie Adorable little gift shop with chochkies and treats AND WINE TASTING
google avatar

Scott L.

Yelp
Roadside attraction. Pistachio products are sadly less expensive at HEB. Dry wines aren't bad, but others, "flavored?!" Ick
google avatar

Dazz D.

Yelp
Fun spot - the world's largest pistachio - how cool is that ? Delicious pistachios - different flavors. Tons of hot sauce and chile spices. You won't leave empty handed! Be sure to get some icecream before you leave
google avatar

Pastor David H.

Yelp
The best stop off the interstate, amazing fresh pistachios with a variety of flavors. Try the ice cream they make there own pistachio ice cream in house.. awesome and give military discount.

Yelp
What brought my husband, our little girl dog and I to Pistachioland is that they have the world's largest pistachio (when my husband and I go on road trips, we like to find road side attractions on our trip to break up the drive). So after taking photos with the giant pistachio, we came inside and were greeted by the employee behind the counter. Behind the counter is the tasting counter for wine, which is open. Currently the Yelp check in offer is a free 4oz bag of pistachio with $15 purchase. As you walk further inside, there are a lot of typical tourist trinkets that you could purchase (keychains, necklaces, stickers, tumblers, magnets, pocket knives, hats, sweaters, etc) but there are also many bags of nuts, which doesn't come as a surprise (I think it would be more surprising if they didn't sell any pistachios or nuts here). You can also purchase snacks like trail mix, popcorn, candy, etc. There is also pickled vegetables, jar salsa, bottled hot sauce, jams and jellies etc as well. I ended up purchasing a few things as obligated gifts for family and scored myself a 4oz bag of pistachios for myself since I sent over $15. Service was friendly and our stop here was pleasant. Oh and just wanted to mention that you can purchase ice cream right outside and there are tables by the giant pistachio for you to sit while you eat your purchase. There are also clean restrooms inside here as well in case you wish to use them.
google avatar

Matt B.

Yelp
If Pistachioland is on your way, I recommend stopping in to check it out. It's a neat place with lots of tastings, fresh ice cream, alien trinkets and of course everything pistachio. The wine tastings from Area Blanco winery are free. I'm not a white wine fan, but the White Sands was superb. The Clarissa red blend was also great. Wesley, the server was awesome. Each guest gets four free samplings. We bought two bottles for around $14 a piece. They don't add nitrates to the wine, which is a plus. The free samples of pistachios entertained my kids. We'll have to take the tour next time.
google avatar

Yelp
What can I say that isn't said in the name. This place is literally a land of pistachios and nuts. I didn't realize how many way you can utilize a pistachio!! On our way out to New Mexico we saw the giant nut kn the side of the road, who could miss it!! So on our way home we decided to stop by and take a look. They have ice cream, bags of nuts, butters, creams, pastes, oils!! If you can think it they can make it from a nut. They even have cool shot glasses that combine are 51 and Pistachio Land. The walls are covered in photos of celebrities and other things that have passed through. My favorite is a picture of the worlds largest pistachio and the worlds largest potato as it made its way to Idaho. If you're looking for a fun place to stop and shop on your trip look no further!!
google avatar

Lili C.

Yelp
Amazing place!! You can shop for souvenirs here, from aliens to the land of enchantment stickers to eating pistachio ice cream and sampling different flavors of pistachio. I def took a bag of green chili pistachio and lemon-lime home. The line was a bit long, but it didn't take long for the ladies' cashier to get everyone thru. They also made sure to ask people if they were veterans!! That was thoughtful!! It's def worth the stop!! You won't miss the giant NUT from the road!!!
