I make it a habit to stop in at every McMenamin's location I find, and was thrilled to discover this quaint resort on the Coast. We made reservations to arrive on a Sunday afternoon, to avoid the weekend golf crowd (Covid & all).
We came into town around noon, and asked about an early check-in, so I could log into work and prep for the week ahead. The front desk agent told me, "They'll have your room ready in just a bit". No worries; we figured that would give us a good chance to walk down to the beach and check out the waves. Beautiful stretch of beach here, by the way!
We returned about an hour later, confident we'd be shown to a room. The clerk said, "They're just finishing up and will call you shortly". Cool! We wandered down the fairway to the 'Sand Pub', a really great watering hole, done in true McMenamin's fashion! We enjoyed a couple brats & a beer flight, and had some great conversations with other guests out on the deck near our table. What a fun time!
We took the long way back to the Resort, exploring another stretch of beach, and came back to the front desk. Still no room! By this time, the super tiny lobby was crowded with other guests sitting on the stairs, hanging out by the pool entrance, and lounging in the entry way, so I sat outside in the wind, for another 20 minutes, to enable effective social distancing. Finally, 5 minutes to 3 (the NORMAL check-in time), they called my cell and let me know they were ready for us! Yippee!!!
In hindsight, I wish the staff would have told me, "We don't do early check-ins". That would have been fine; we could have gone into town and found wifi to connect to. SO FRUSTRATING to get such a lack of clear communication. I chalk it up to being short-staffed, which is understandable in this era, but the lack of communication is very sub-par for McMenamin's standards.
The room was plenty comfy, but very small; while it didn't have a desk or a place for me to work on my laptop, we made do (The bathroom had plenty of room, so we 'compromised'...) The facility was a lot like the hotels they have with shared bathrooms - but really should have been roomier, to accommodate traveling remote workers. There was nothing in our reservation to indicate it would not have been adequate for remote working.
The rest of the stay was fine; it is a truly beautiful location, and the back lawn & veranda is amazing! The good was great, as always. The staff - while not as friendly & engaging as other locations, were still efficient and available.
Parking: Plenty of room for their guests - seemed safe & well-lit
Layout: The bars & restaurants were easy to find, and the outdoor seating was really well donw.
Menu: Classic McMenamin's style
The Prize: Getting to stay on the Oregon Coast in a well-appointed resort is always a treat.
Value: Decent prices, given the location, but we probably won't be back to visit the Gearhart Hotel again anytime soon.
