McMonagle's – Clydebank, Scotland - Gastro Obscura

"The Forth and Clyde Canal opened in 1790. It crosses central Scotland and provides a route for seagoing vessels between the Firth of Forth and the Firth of Clyde. As the canal is 56 kilometers (35 miles) long, it could be expected that people may get hungry along the way. Those looking for some food are in luck. Situated in Clydebank, not too far from the Firth of Clyde, is McMonagle’s Restaurant. Opened in the 1990s, it claims to be the world’s first sail-through fish-and-chips shop. The restaurant sits on a boat with two sides for ordering your takeaway: one window for land-dwellers on foot, and one that opens right onto the canal. You can actually place your order and pick it up from the back hatch without even having to leave your boat. Ships have played a very important part in the history of Clydebank, which used to be the home of John Brown and Company, the Scottish marine engineering and shipbuilding firm. At its height, from 1900 to the 1950s, it was one of the most highly regarded, and internationally famous, shipbuilding companies in the world. McMonagle’s is situated aboard the 100-ton Debra Rose ship, which was built in Campbeltown. Interestingly, after the boat was towed up the Clyde, it had to be cut into eight pieces to be carried over the last 400 yards to the canal, where it was welded back together. The Debra Rose does not float but sits on cement. The menu consists of usual “chippie” classics, including haddock, sausage, and haggis, as well as traditional breakfasts, pizzas, and healthy light bites. It makes a perfect last supper before you journey West, toward the Small Isles. Know Before You Go The Restaurant is open 12:00 to 9:00 p.m., Monday to Sunday. The Forth and Clyde Canal has a wealth of history that can be explored the whole way along its banks. It makes for a great walk or cycle." - grahamstewartwalker

I wanted to try here because of all the good reviews, and I wasn’t totally disappointed. My wife loved her chicken sandwich and the gravy she ordered for her chips. My kids loved their food and ice cream. I absolutely cherished the haggis fritters. They were incredibly good and perfectly prepared. I just have to admit, I really disliked my fish and chips. The fish was very rubbery and had a not so fresh taste. I couldn’t finish it.

Amazing food and great service. 👏🏽 Me and my husband had the Haddock and spicy chicken pizza. Everything was so fresh and delicious. 😋 We will definitely be back!

Restaurant rating, no stars! This is the second time we have been to the restaurant and finished up using their takeaway service. Atmosphere and service totally lacking. Not a smile or welcome anywhere. We left after 10 - 15 minutes and went down to the takeaway. The restaurant was not busy. The service at the takeaway was immediate even though they were very busy. Food there was good and we ate at their provided picnic tables. The area was tidy, well provided with bins. We will probably return to their takeaway but no, we will not return to the restaurant. Great pity as it was so nice before they upgraded their menu to look all posh. They failed the star rating, not even 1 star.

Enjoyed the Fish & Chips aboard this ship-like restaurant! Jacket potato with tuna is recommended. Also the kids have their menu and we had fish fingers and chips. Also the Margarita pizza 🍕 (cheese pizza) was great. They offer other meats & drinks as well, including halal options. Service was great & the atmosphere is accommodating & delightful.

Pretty decent fish supper here! The batter is light and crispy. Chips are not greasy at all. One great idea... The cartons they serve it in have a divider, which separates the fish from the chips. This stops the fish batter getting soggy from the steam off the chips. Simple but genius! Went back recently for a sit in. You can get a large haddock with plenty chips and a drink for £15.75. Bloody delicious! Great service too.

It’s decent when you sit in, but don’t waste your money on a takeaway/delivery. You’d think it was two different restaurants. The food quality is terrible. Greasy, overcooked, and bad quality potatoes being used for their chips/baked potatoes.
