McMonagle's – Clydebank, Scotland - Gastro Obscura

"The Forth and Clyde Canal opened in 1790. It crosses central Scotland and provides a route for seagoing vessels between the Firth of Forth and the Firth of Clyde. As the canal is 56 kilometers (35 miles) long, it could be expected that people may get hungry along the way. Those looking for some food are in luck. Situated in Clydebank, not too far from the Firth of Clyde, is McMonagle’s Restaurant. Opened in the 1990s, it claims to be the world’s first sail-through fish-and-chips shop. The restaurant sits on a boat with two sides for ordering your takeaway: one window for land-dwellers on foot, and one that opens right onto the canal. You can actually place your order and pick it up from the back hatch without even having to leave your boat. Ships have played a very important part in the history of Clydebank, which used to be the home of John Brown and Company, the Scottish marine engineering and shipbuilding firm. At its height, from 1900 to the 1950s, it was one of the most highly regarded, and internationally famous, shipbuilding companies in the world. McMonagle’s is situated aboard the 100-ton Debra Rose ship, which was built in Campbeltown. Interestingly, after the boat was towed up the Clyde, it had to be cut into eight pieces to be carried over the last 400 yards to the canal, where it was welded back together. The Debra Rose does not float but sits on cement. The menu consists of usual “chippie” classics, including haddock, sausage, and haggis, as well as traditional breakfasts, pizzas, and healthy light bites. It makes a perfect last supper before you journey West, toward the Small Isles. Know Before You Go The Restaurant is open 12:00 to 9:00 p.m., Monday to Sunday. The Forth and Clyde Canal has a wealth of history that can be explored the whole way along its banks. It makes for a great walk or cycle." - grahamstewartwalker

I wanted to try here because of all the good reviews, and I wasn’t totally disappointed. My wife loved her chicken sandwich and the gravy she ordered for her chips. My kids loved their food and ice cream. I absolutely cherished the haggis fritters. They were incredibly good and perfectly prepared. I just have to admit, I really disliked my fish and chips. The fish was very rubbery and had a not so fresh taste. I couldn’t finish it.

Amazing food and great service. 👏🏽 Me and my husband had the Haddock and spicy chicken pizza. Everything was so fresh and delicious. 😋 We will definitely be back!

Enjoyed the Fish & Chips aboard this ship-like restaurant! Jacket potato with tuna is recommended. Also the kids have their menu and we had fish fingers and chips. Also the Margarita pizza 🍕 (cheese pizza) was great. They offer other meats & drinks as well, including halal options. Service was great & the atmosphere is accommodating & delightful.

Very busy and an excellent fish and chips restaurant in Clydebank. Gluten free options too

Google
Restaurant rating, no stars! This is the second time we have been to the restaurant and finished up using their takeaway service. Atmosphere and service totally lacking. Not a smile or welcome anywhere. We left after 10 - 15 minutes and went down to the takeaway. The restaurant was not busy. The service at the takeaway was immediate even though they were very busy. Food there was good and we ate at their provided picnic tables. The area was tidy, well provided with bins. We will probably return to their takeaway but no, we will not return to the restaurant. Great pity as it was so nice before they upgraded their menu to look all posh. They failed the star rating, not even 1 star.

Pretty decent fish supper here! The batter is light and crispy. Chips are not greasy at all. One great idea... The cartons they serve it in have a divider, which separates the fish from the chips. This stops the fish batter getting soggy from the steam off the chips. Simple but genius! Went back recently for a sit in. You can get a large haddock with plenty chips and a drink for £15.75. Bloody delicious! Great service too.

Google
Absolutely amazing meal. Fish was perfectly done, not over done with batter, and plenty of cod. I’m visiting my Family and come from Lincolnshire. Was so worth the 5 and a half hour drive. Perfect 😁

Yelp
The food was fantastic and the service was amazingly friendly, easily superior to the only other high end experience I have tried of the same type, Mancinis of Helensburgh pales in comparison easily outclassed by the ambiance offered by the experience of dining on a boat!

Yelp
McMonagles has recently underwent a refurbishment and is looking fab! The main reason that I visit here is that they offer gluten free fish and chips all the time for sit in and takeaway. I have also noticed that they will cook fritters for you gluten free if you ask. The staff are really friendly and the prices are quite reasonable too. The only reason that this is not a 5 star review is that there is no disabled access to the main restaurant as it is upstairs so bringing my mum here is a no go and i would also like to see a few more items on the gluten free menu.

Yelp
If you want a traditiona UK food that is the place. Our choice was salmon & chips and Scott fish & chips. The coffee served was perfect but the tea was kind of weak, nothing that cannot be fixed. Nice service at all.

Yelp
Was recently re-painted and looks great. If you want the best fish & chips in Clydebank, this is the place!

Yelp
Came here on Friday evening to have a quiet dinner with my partner. Have to say the service was nothing short of awesome. From the moment we stepped upstairs we were greeted with nice friendly staff who promptly sat us down and took our orders. Food was served nice and quickly, freshly made and tasted great. Wonderful experience, will happily go back as well as using their home delivery service. (Like we also did tonight)

Yelp
I have had great experiences and not so great experiences in here but the former is normally true. This is a chippy on a boat in a canal. This is a stable of clydebank life and architecture. For as long as I can remember coming through clydebank we have stopped her for fish and chips be it take away or sit in depending on the outside weather. The reason for only 4 stars is that the food isn't consistent. Out of the past 4 visits 3 were great the 4th the food and service were terrible. I am putting this down to the team on that day but I still need to take it in to consideration. Food is typical fish and chip shop with pizza too boot. Massive portions and if you sit in you get tea or coffee with your meal. There are better chip shops but not in this locality and being on a boat is always a taking point.

Yelp
Love this place. Chippy but on a boat. Cracking fish and chips. For me its one of those places you visit every so often but it is worth the wait. £15.50 for 2 Fish and chips, 1 coke and 2 slice of bread and butter. Sitting in the up stairs restaurant part. Seems fair enough to myself. Portion wise I feel you could probably get a little bit more. Then again I would say the quality makes up for it. When heading for the restaurant part you encounter some steep steps at first. Then through doors and you are in the thick of this wooden clad boat. Quite a nice gimmick to be on a boat having your fish and chips. Not a place I would go and order anything other than the fish. Just would not seem right, need your head checking if you do. Spot on service. Staff nice and friendly. As I say this is not my local, only visit every so often but I love the place. Lunchtime it fills up with the silver surfers, that's a sign of a good place. They also have a takeaway part with some tables and chairs out front for when that 1 sunny day arrives. Though it would seem the seagulls lurk around just waiting to carry you away. It is up there with a select few as my favourite fish and chips places.

Yelp
As much a Clydebank landmark as Singers or the Town Hall, McMonagles is the one and only "chippy on a boat". Well, I don't know if it's the one and only, but it's certainly the only one I've encountered. Were it not on a boat, it'd probably be a fairly run of the mill chippy. The fact that it is, means the fish tastes that little bit fresher and the experience a little bit more memorable. Four stars.

Yelp
I remember when McMonagles first arrived in Clydebank. "It's a restaurant.... but it's a boat!" excited locals cried. "It's a chippy... but you need to climb onto a boat!" You get the picture. Now the excitement has dimmed somewhat and McMonagles, lodged in its spot in the canal, is as part of the Clydebank furniture as the Town Hall and 24 hour Asda. It still reliably provides take away chips from the back of the boat and there is a sit in restaurant upstairs. But if you haven't been before, you're in for a treat. You see, it's a chippy... but it's a boat!

Yelp
Visited a few times, first time was a very pleasant occasion. But have let there standards slip, and are holding on to a outdated award thinking it will keep people coming in. The homemade steak-pie is cafe standard at best..if you want a pop out dinner fine, buy if you want to pay money for a not eating at home experience look else where

Yelp
A novel chippy, a refurbished boat built into a chippy downstairs and a restaurant upstairs. The boat is set in the canal, do can serve the boats as they pass. Well known for the high quality of their food which is made to order. They offer a take away service, you can sit in down stairs although seating is limited. Adequate parking to the front and picnic tables outside.

Yelp
Picked up some chips last night for dinner, very tasty! Crisp and fresh batter on my king rib (don't judge me) and the chips were really good. My dining companions only had good things to say about their fish and oven baked pizza, too. Quick, efficient service. Worth the drive from the barren chip lands of Biahopton.

Yelp
I hate to be the fly in the ointment here, but i'm afraid the last few times i was in McMonagles i had a very different experience. Once upon a time i took all my visitors there for a wonderful breakfast before they went out for the day and they were all well impressed. On the last two occassions i had quite a different opinion. the first time i went in with a friend for lunch and we decided to have the fish as we always did breakfast. when it eventually arrived. ( it DOES get busy, but no fault there) i discovered the fish inside the batter was GONE. there was nothing but a nice smell. When i complained i got a very loud and rude reply. We paid and left.Last time again we waited quite a long time for a breakfast and got it cold and greasy. Sorry, i wont be going back.

Yelp
Friendly service, food was served quick and was fresh and tasty, best of all it has an ice blast machine. Plus it's on a boat!

Yelp
Good chippie, but waiting time is long and is overpriced compared to other chip shops in the area.

Yelp
Love Mcmonagles, great chippy! Their batter is amazing!

Yelp
I think this place is slightly overrated. Having to wait 10 minutes on your order is fine as you know it is being cooked fresh. But seriously the price is way too high. Staff were friendly enough though.

Yelp
McMonagle's Fish Restaurant! The world's first sail thru restaurant!! Built on the banks of the Forth and Clyde canal in clydebank, th chippy boat has a sit in restaurant upstairs, and a take away downstairs. They also have a sail thru window at th side of the boat for any passing boats to buy their dinner!! They sell a huge variety of foods.

Qype User (claire…)

Yelp
Fantastic talking point with anyone who has never been to Clydebank, First sail thru chippy, altho I dont think this is used very much Lovely resturant upstairs with nice deals. I know many people who go here regularaly for their lunch and they always give this a very high review. Sometimes in the take away you have to wait for your order, at least you know it is freshly cooked and not been lying there for ages. The Pizzas from here are also very good. Staff are friendly and helpful too.

Yelp
Great wee chippy, The fish supper and the pizzas are the best washed down with a ice blast defo recommended well done John

Yelp
I just cant fault this place. The staff at the restaurant are absolutely fantastic - despite being rushed off their feet! The food is just gorgeous and their prices so good too. We have been lots of times and sometimes we wait maybe ten mins for a table but despite that our orders are still taken within 5 mins and fresh bread and butter put on our table. The steak pie is amazing and the meat just melts in your mouth. The only tiny wee moan I have is there is no access for someone who is disabled - and we have an elderly neighbour who would love to go to the restaurant (which is upstairs btw). On mentioning this to the staff they said if I brought her when it wasnt busy they would set up a table downstairs for her - how thoughtful and lovely was that! A very well deserved 5 stars

Qype User (tallgu…)

Yelp
Well i have been to the takeaway side of this boat on many occasions and also in the restaurant few times. So it was a while since i entered this establishment upstairs until few weeks ago. I ordered fish and chips and beans. I new we had to wait as its cooked fresh but wasnt happy what came out this fish big though it was it was all batter not much fish inside the chips were shrivelled up think reheats. Think john has to sort these things out this place was good a while back but think its slipping also prices are quite high for fish and chips after 5pm. I wont rite this place of but stay clear for a while see if it picks up.

Qype User (Darbyh…)

Yelp
I like my fish and chips and can safely say this a good chippy with fresh produce used good shoppers specials deals in the upstairs restaurant7/10
