PASO ROBLES CITY GUIDE

"MCV Wines is a family owned and operated winery. Established in 2011 with the mission to create premium small lot Petite Sirah and Petite Sirah dominant blends. BUT... Don't let that fool you, because we make a killer Sauvignon Blanc, Grenache, and other single varietals. Please, come experience a hidden gem, newly located in the TIN CITY ANNEX!"

I very much enjoyed my visit to MCV. I love petite sirah, so tasting wines made with them was obviously a highlight. I also really enjoyed meeting Matt and talking with him about his wines and his processes. This was the kind of experience that hooked me on small wine producers long ago, the personal connection and amazing small batch wines. The "Black" was my favorite of the tasting lineup, with all of the wonderfulness that petite sirah brings. A surprise favorite was the "Pink", which is not your typical rosé, but a much more complex and interesting one. I happily signed up for the club membership 🙂

Originally I had visited MCV Wines when they were in the Morro Bay area. It had been a long time and while visiting Paso Robles and the Tin City Annex area I saw their building and made a plan to stop in. I made a reservation through their website and decided to throw in a cheese pairing to go along with the tasting. Very comfy tasting room and was greeted by our host Jason who was already setup and waiting for our group. The wine lineup was phenomenal and while MCV Wines are known for their darker wines and all it's inky goodness they also had a nice Sauv Blanc and a tasting Granache. The tasting really had a well crafted order, and SUPER enjoyed the wine and cheese pairings. There was a cheese specifically picked to go with the tastes of each wine and having many of these in the past worked well. My favorite pairing of the group was the Midnight Moon paired with MCVs flagship 1105 (Dark Blend). When the wine hit the cheese, POP!, it diffused into some amazing flavors (and texture)! My second was the Mango Stilton with the Sauv Blanc, and while I normally don't drink a lot of white wine, that is a duo that I could plan for in the future. Also had a chance to meet the owner and winemaker Matt. Was nice to chat with him about his wines and always great to meet the people behind the grapes. Overall a really nice experience and would highly recommend this tasting room when visiting Paso Robles or Tin City in the near future (and be sure to try the wine and cheese pairing). What was your favorite?

I met with both owners; they were well-versed on their wine selections both white and red. I purchased several bottles including white and red. My favorite was Gemeny Vineyard Petite Syrah 2020: full body, low tannins. Rich nose and flavors.

I almost don't want to share this gem: What a treat! High quality wines of the best varieties served up by a smart and enthusiastic team - next time we visit Cali we know where to start 😃

Yelp
We stopped by MCV wines in Tin City on our way to Paso Robles and enjoy their wines and discussion. They have a very nice wine tasting room and plenty of wine varitals to try.

Yelp
AWESOME! The wine tasting experience was amazing. Matt and Teresa gave us such a wonderful wine tasting experience. I highly recommend this winery! All the wines we tasted were delicious!

Yelp
Literally a mom and pop place, complete w a couple of young boys running around. Chat them up a bit and they'll sneak in some hidden gems to the tasting menu. Some very interesting varietals.

Yelp
Ambiance, people and most of all the passion and love Matt and Teresa put into creating great blends . Service is amazing.

Yelp
We had a great experience here thanks to Tracy, who is extremely friendly and fun -Wines are solid Tannat and their 1105 blend were excellent as was the petite Syrah..nice cozy tasting room.

Yelp
Our recent tasting with MCV wines was a very large disappointment. It was a group of about 60 people that joined us at Cava Robles resort. We paid $20 a piece for a five flight tasting. The rep from MCV (Justin) showed up about 15 minutes late. The entire experience was very rushed and disorganized. Everyone at our table had the opinion that Justin had probably been drinking. His explanation of the wines was bizarre. Justin then claimed that one of our flights had recently sold out and so we were being served another one. Spoiler alert: it was not good. At all. Then to top everything off, he obviously hadn't shown up with our fifth wine, so he decided to auction it off as a "lottery" item. We all had to choose a number between one and 100 in order to win the bottle. Everyone was completely confused why we weren't getting the fifth tasting. His explanation was far-fetched. It would've been easier if he had just told us the truth or given us an option for a fifth tasting. This is easily our worst experience with any wine tasting in the Paso Robles area. I can't see a scenario where we would ever visit the actual winery, based off of this experience

Yelp
I originally visited MCV Wines at their previous location in Morro Bay. It was cute and very small, and I was excited to visit their new tasting room and winemaking facility in the Tin City Annex. Where's the Annex? It's a block or so south of Tin City (just take La Cruz Way south from Marquita St) and a world away from the sometimes hectic and crowded Tin City. And while the location is great, the wines are what will keep bringing me back. Winemaker Matthew Villard has a passion for Petite Sirah, the luscious nearly black grape that's known for its deep tannin and corresponding flavors. With a few special vineyard-designate vintages and their flagship 1105 blend, you'll get a great tour of Petite Sirah and its nuances. At my most recent tasting, I also enjoyed MCV's good single varietal wines, including Sauvignon Blanc, Tannat, Grenache, Syrah, and Petit Verdot. They also make lovely port-style Petite Sirah (and named with initial of their two young sons). MCV is a true family run winery, with Matt and Teresa Villard taking care of their customers. They really make you feel welcome to the MCV family. I look forward to going back for another tasting soon!

Yelp
The boyfriend and I came across MCV quite randomly one lazy Sunday. We had just finished up brunch nearby and decided to walk to main street. To our surprise the tasting room was open, so we strolled in. Inside was very quiet and we found the owner to himself. We loved the vibe and proximity to the bay. It was relaxing, inviting, and totally unpretentious. The owner was incredibly pleasant and informative and we had a great time chatting and sipping his wines. We even bought a bottle of 1105, their flagship wine. 1105 is a lovely red blend that hits all the right notes. Perfect for and afterwork drink or paired with almost any food. Even non-wine drinkers will appreciate this balanced wine. Heavily made with Petite Syrah, a touch of Syrah, Tannat, Grenache and then a splash of Petite Verdot and touch of Viognier round it out. If you're in the Morro area try MCV!

Yelp
Can't go wrong. Parking is easy, paying is easy, and the design of the tasting room is very minimal. The lego plants have a funny story behind it.

Yelp
We went here twice during our stay in Paso to pick up to-go wine tastings. They were very helpful and we liked the wine so much that we went back to get another tasting flight to go and then get one as a gift as well. The 1105 is my fav but honestly we really liked all the wines, and the kindness of their people. We will definitely be back!

Yelp
So I was at the same tasting event (Cava Robles) last night as the other person that did a review. It was definitely an awkward event. Justin seemed like he had too much to drink and kept giving these bizarre explanations of the wine and about the winery. He kept referring the wine as "grocery store wine." I don't know how else to describe it other than bizarre. At $20 a head with a maximum of 60 people, they were making a decent amount of money. To be shorted one of the flights and then given a different wine then what was on the sheet was disappointing to say the least. They also passed out these plastic containers of salami, cheese, and nuts. The salami was clearly not fresh. The pieces looked bluish/grey and tasted really bad. To be fair, I'm not sure if it was MCV or Cava that made those but it was terrible. Overall a subpar experience that will probably keep me from ever going to the winery. I'm sure the winery is very nice, but the representation of the winery last night was really embarrassing.

Yelp
I've now been to MCV twice. His tasting room is located in the heart of downtown Morro Bay. Right on the water. So nice to be able to walk the town and then drop in for a tasting. We have certainly been happy with the wine we have tasted and purchased. Our favorite is his 1105. Really world class. I really admire Matt, the wine maker and owner. A young family man pursuing his passion. We wish him much success and enjoy seeing his Wine win more and more blue ribbons. Do yourself a favor and try MCV. There will be a day when MCV wines will be more expensive and less available.

Yelp
Awesome wine, loved the whole line-up. Considering the wines up here in Paso, these wines were exceptionally well balanced with a lot of expression in each wine. We met the winemaker/owner/founder, Matt, and his wife who both took care of us at the tasting room. Super nice people, down to earth, great wine. Hope to enjoy one of their winemaker dinners, everyone in town raves about their chef. Absolutely check this place out

Yelp
I stopped here unexpectedly on my way home from Paso. Best decision ever. They were super accommodating even though I did not have reservations. The wine was great. The staff was awesome, especially Chris. I would highly recommend.

Yelp
The owner and the wines were amazing. My husband and I went here for our first ever wine tasting. We were so nervous because we never went wine tasting before, and we were scared that we were going to feel out of place or embarrassed during the process due to our inexperience. The owner is hilarious, and he's so down to earth. He made the experience much less intimidating because he was so thoughtful, knowledgeable, helpful, and humble. All of the wines are produced in his own vineyard in Paso Robles. They all score very high due to the balance in their flavors. My husband is a bit of a wine noob, so his palate hasn't adjusted to wines that aren't Stella Rosa. I, on the other hand, have experimented with wines more than him, and the MCV wines are so great. He showed us a trick when it came to wine tasting. When smelling the wine, place your nose over the glass at a tilt, open your mouth slightly, and inhale. Depending on the angle of the tilt, your nose can perceive the fruit taste or the alcohol taste. We found this so fun and entertaining. Not only did we do a wine tasting, we also did a chocolate tasting that paired with the wine. Let me tell you, I am not a chocolate lover whatsoever. It's usually too sweet for my taste buds, but MCV's chocolate was to die for. There were about 5 or 6 different chocolates to taste. They all had a blend of different oils, nuts, and salts. I really wished that we had bought some chocolate to take home because MCV closed at 5 pm, and we had a boat ride that ended at 5 pm. Overall, I'd like to come back to buy some wine and chocolate when my husband and I are in the area. I appreciate the owner so much for not making us feel like idiots when tasting the wine.

It's obviously a spectacular location and It's Just perfect to be able To sit outside the boat yard and bring your dog, Lily my amazing Tibetan terrier, and have your doggie sit in your lap while you're drinking spectacular wines!!

Yelp
MCV is our favorite winery because they have some of the best wine in California. But this review isn't about their wine. This review is about the innovative ways MCV has adapted to COVID-19 restrictions. Reservations are required, so we called and spoke to Liz. She was very helpful and able to answer our questions. MCV has built several cabanas, which offer comfort and privacy. The cabanas also help maintain social distancing and enhance safety. MCV personalized ours by putting a cute sign on our cabana to let us know where we were sitting. What I thought was especially innovative was their use of small bottles, served on ice, to serve the tasting. Each of the bottles held two tastings of each wine of the tasting menu. Again, a safety measure we haven't seen anywhere else. The staff was attentive and friendly, and made sure they stayed their distance, wore gloves, and of course, kept their masks on. When you're looking for outstanding wine, and you want to stay safe, I strongly recommend you head to MCV.

Yelp
A unique gift, and a great experience!! I bought the red wine and chocolate pairing kits for me and my friend for her birthday. I found this winery on a list of 'virtual tastings' and it was one of the few who could ship to me in New Jersey and the prices were super reasonable. As they don't currently ship to NJ (but I believe it will become an option soon) I had to email the owner but she was super helpful and also ran a live tasting for us over zoom which was very informative. The chocolates were super rich and came from 'Mama Ganache' a local chocolatier. My favorite was the Rosewynn Vineyard Petite Sirah paired with an 'Aztec Dark Truffle' that had a spice kick! Although I hope to one day physically visit, this was a great experience especially during lockdown!

Yelp
Had a great tasting and took home two bottles. Flavorful reds, both classic profiles and some more unique tastes. Theresa was gracious enough to allow us to taste even though it was near closing time. She was extremely knowledgeable about the grape varietals and generally friendly. Also, it's dog friendly, which is always important for us since we travel with our pup.

Layne P.

Yelp
Teresa is amazing! We ordered wine tasting kits for a friend's birthday, with several orders going cross country. She was super helpful over the phone and on the big day gave us a Zoom tour of their facilities and "live" tasting. She answered all of our questions with such knowledge! The wines were a big hit, as were the chocolate pairings. The 1105 and Black were the biggest hits of the evening. I look forward to the end of the covid lockdown so I can visit in person.

Mark M.

Yelp
Hands down the best wine! They care for your health! We travel from San Diego and know that they understand of what's going on with covid, we went to other businesses and they didn't have social distancing, and MCV took care of my family, and that's what matters thank you MCV

Yelp
Absolutely loved everything about this wine tasting room. The decor is bright and cheery. The winetender James is awesome, so filled with knowledge. Sitting out on the patio looking at the bay is beyond gorgeous. I'll be a regular!

Tara S.

Yelp
The wines were absolutely amazing and the lady who assisted us (forget the fancy name for it) was just the most friendly and down to earth. We went on a Sunday so it wasn't too busy. The wine bottles are economically priced and the quality is superb. We didn't buy any at the time of the tasting as we had to fly but we definitely plan to order some from their website now that we are home. I would highly recommend MCV Wines.

Yelp
Excellent wines, truly special and unique. First went there a few years ago and it has become one of my favorite wineries to visit. Highly recommended!

Michael Z.

Yelp
Amazing. MCV is our only wine club that we actually drink regularly and always end up ordering more. Most of Matt's (he's the owner) wines are 90 points or better-if that is what drives your wine buying and his knowledge of his wines is incredible but doesn't make anyone feel like they're dumb for not knowing something. You can even pair the wine with chocolate, my wife's favorite thing to do on a lazy afternoon. Next time you're in the Morro Bay area make sure to check them out and you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Excellent customer service--very friendly place--the wine was exquisite as well

Yelp
Really nice place with good wine. The owner, Matt is very knowledgable about his product and its food pairing possibilities. The bar is very casual and friendly, it's a relaxing place to hide on the busy embarcadero.

Susan E.

Yelp
We had heard excellent reviews of the MCV wines - this was our first tasting and we weren't disappointed. Loved these wines! We purchased the 2016 Viognier, the 2013 Syrah, the 2014 1105 blend and the 2014 Rosewynn Petite Sirah. Great experience, great wines.

J. D.

Yelp
MCV wines is a great place to taste wine and just hang out, especially on the patio or at the tasting counter. The wines are excellent. They even offer a tasting option that pairs each wine in the lineup with its own specialty chocolate if your sweet tooth needs satisfaction. My favorite wines so far are i) the MCV Black (any vintage) and ii) the MCV 1105 (2013 vintage), the latter of which was so good that I wished I had opened it for different (i.e. more special) friends! I live in Texas but visit the region as much as I can (did my Ph.D. at UC Davis) and I am sure to stop at MCV and take a case home to enjoy. They have a wine club too with different options. Highly recommended!
