This is my fifth visit to the Maldives, so I have some previous experiences to compare this visit with. Overall, it was a positive experience but it was shadowed by some shortcomings.
One of the positives is that the island is beatiful; it is a narrow piece of land, and if you walk through the central path, you can see the sea between the trees on both sides, to your left and to your right. It is lovely as it has mature trees, covering the path and making it sheltered from the scorching sun. Another positive is how lovely the staff is; very attentive and accommodating, although communication was sometimes hindered by inadequate English language skills (even reception staff). Now, here are the reasons why it is a 3 stars review and not 5.
1. The sea is full of seaweed, floating as well as growing in the sand all around the island. That was a major disappointment for me as the water was grey instead of the wonderful turquoisy colour you normally get around a Maldivian island as well as the fact that you could not swim in it.
2. The resort is tired; definitely not a 4 star; more of a 3. However, it is kept clean and it was not a bother to me.
3. There was no seif to lock the valuables; that stressed me out a bit but I locked everything in my suitcase.
4. I gave 1 star for the location because the island is very near an inhabited Maldivian island and every several hours (starting around 5.00 a.m. and then 5 times a day) the silence was broken by the Muslim prayers/chanting broadcast loudly over speakers. Again, silence is one of the Maldivian island experiences I went there for.
5. The major disappointment was the food. Firstly, I felt that there was very little choice. The majority of the food was Indian cuisine (curries, rice and noodles Asian style spiced) and only a couple of non-Asian dishes. So if you didn't like Indian cuisine, you were not spoilt for choice. Secondly, some of the ingredients were poor quality (e.g. mushrooms from the tins rather than fresh ones, soluble Nescafe not ground coffee; they did not have decaff coffee, not even the Nescafé). Thirdly, some food products were disappointing tastewise. For breakfast, the yoghurt advertised as fruit yoghurt, was actually natural yoghurt, with an un-edable sandy texture, in which they must have put some food colouring to resemble the fruit as the taste was non-existent. The bread was not fresh and neither the pastry. The fruit salad was 3/4 of apples; If you wanted melon/watermelon they would slice it separately for you. I only saw papaya once. The mixed vegetables advertised as sautéed were actually watery. There was no meal were they offered french fries. Now, comparing with the other four resorts I previously visited-Coco Palm Dhuni Kolnu, Adharan Meedhuparu, Meeru, Angaga) which are of similar standing, this was a bit disappointing. However, the Indian food was very tasty and as I do not dislike Indian cuisine, it worked out OK for me in the end. Would I go back? No. Would I recommend it? No.
