On the Grid : The International Centre of Graphic Arts

"The International Centre of Graphic Arts is a specialized museum and producer of printed and contemporary art. The museum and its bar are situated in the best possible surroundings ‒ at the hearth of Tivoli Park, overlooking the walking promenade and with great views of the city. It takes care of an extensive collection of prints and artists’ books, works from the collection are available for view in the study room and are accompanied by a library for the public. The institution’s most recognizable activity is the Biennial of Graphic Arts with a longstanding tradition, dating back into 1955." - Multipraktik

This art space showcases contemporary printmaking, drawing, book art, illustration, and mixed media. It also serves as the venue for the Ljubljana Biennial of Graphic Arts, which began in 1955. The center is housed in Tivoli Castle, a former 17th-century aristocratic mansion that underwent several renovations during the 19th and 20th centuries. In front of the building, a large outdoor photo exhibition area is known for its seasonal themed displays. Whether you're taking a casual stroll through Tivoli Park or visiting during the Biennial, it’s a wonderful place to stop by and enjoy a rich experience of art.

Nice museum in the middle part of Park Tivoli. In front of the building there are stairs, which guarded by 4 dog-shaped statues. There is a fountain with some benches. Doesn't matter in which period you visit the place it will be always nice. If you arrive by car you can park in the northeast part of the park.

A very nice museum with seasonal exhibits. Had the chance to spend part of my afternoon here and were able to see how details were carefully taken in consideration, specially with a good translation of all the content to English. The space was very well used to fit in a couple of exhibits and the cafe just at the museum’s doorstep was a nice touch.

Admission price is not worth it and the website is misleading. It’s 6€ to enter the main building and they tell you there is another exhibition in a building nearby. When I got there, they wanted another 3€ for admission! The website also says “one museum, two locations” which makes it sound like you can visit both with your ticket, and does not mention an additional entrance fee for the other building. While I enjoyed the exhibition in the main building, it was only one floor, and I did not want to pay again to see the other exhibition. Overall a very disappointing experience.

The International Graphic Art Center (abbreviation MGLC) is a museum and producer of graphic and contemporary art, based in Tivoli Castle, Ljubljana. It was founded on December 25, 1986 as a public municipal institution. The initiative for the establishment arose from the international success of the Ljubljana International Graphic Biennale. Thus, Slovenia's largest international art event got its own premises. It was first led by Zoran Kržišnik, between 2000 and 2010 by Lilijana Stepančič, then by Barbara Savenc and from 2011 by Nevenka Šivavec.
