The Many Ways to Shape a Tree

"The words “world’s largest” have a way of piquing the interest of just about anybody, but the world’s largest hedge might seem to be the exception to that rule. However don’t let the mundane name fool you, it is one hell of a leafy sight, standing 120 feet tall at its highest point. Just think of the stepladder you’d need to keep that in trim. The massive hedge runs along 580 feet of the A93 Perth to Blairgowrie road, on the left if you’re going north. It is believed to have been planted in the autumn of 1745 by Jean Mercer of Meikleour, and her husband Robert Murray Nairne (who was later killed at the Battle of Culloden). Even with it’s historical origins, the Meikleour Beech Hedge has carried the crown of “world’s largest” since 1966. As with any world record, it’s a serious business and the hedge is cut and remeasured every ten years. It is looked after by the Meikleour Trust and maintenance takes four men approximately six weeks to complete. Anyone looking to visit the hedge could be forgiven for missing it, as to the untrained eye it looks not unlike a tall, well-kept row of trees. The pavement underneath is narrow so from the bottom a person can’t quite see the top, like a proper skyscraper. And being beech, the hedge turns a lovely color in the autumn. Scotland isn’t renowned for its big things, but they can take some pride in this, even if it is only a hedge." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

We drove past and were amazed by the height and length of the beech hedge. Amazing to think they have stood here since 1745! They are in the Guinness book of records for the tallest and longest hedge on Earth.

What a size of a hedge. Very impressive, first time ever driven by it. Went past with my parents and son when we were driving to Blairgrowie as part of my mum's birthday. The area holds a lot of memories for my mum as her parents lived and worked in this general area many decades ago. My grandad for a time helped maintain the beech hedge which I bet wasn't easy back then to do.

Interesting place to watch if you are near by. Just a small parking by the road.

Great bush, biggest I’ve ever seen, very well trimmed! My girlfriend was wondering who maintains it? However, we did question what makes it a bush and not just a row of trees?

A beautiful huge beech hedge, read about the history, it's very interesting. We stayed in a nearby holiday park, called Beech Hedge which was beautiful and peaceful.

I screamed with joy at the sight of this magnificent wonder. Best hedge I’ve ever seen. So tall. So green. Majestic. My cheeks burn with laughter.

Gigantic! Driving on the A93 from Perth to Blairgowrie (or vice versa) you will pass a very remarkable hedge along the way. The Meikleour Beech Hedges (European Beech - Fagus sylvatica) were planted in the autumn of 1745 by Robert Murray Nairne and his wife Jean Mercer and with a length of 530 meters and a height of 30 meters this hedge is rightly listed in the Guinness World Records . Very impressive, but I'm glad I don't have to trim this hedge :)
