Founder of Blue Bottle Coffee Uncovers His Favorite Tokyo Cafés - AFAR

"A music‑focused meikyoku kissaten in Shibuya’s Love Hotel district where talking is discouraged and visitors come primarily to listen. The interior is an eclectic mix of European architectural motifs — Venetian Gothic arches and Corinthian columns — creating a theatrical, reverent atmosphere for music lovers." - Adam H. Graham

Google
A one of a kind experience, and highly recommended for anyone remotely interested in classical music. The coffee was merely so-so, but the real draw is the music and ambiance. There is no talking allowed, and the whole place is set up like a church with all seats facing the altar of classical music where the current album is displayed. It's a serene experience to sip your coffee and enjoy the music in this space. Don't expect just the classical "hits" either, as their collection is extensive. We were treated to a dramatic Bartok string quartet which was a very intense experience.

I would describe it as a rather spooky experience. The lights are dim, the smell is weird, like a real ghost house. Sound is super awesome. Se had piano concertos, not my nr1 favourite but suited to the situation well. Go sit upstairs or to the front if possibe. Lemonade was good but otherwise options were limited to tee/coffee/lemonade.

One of the best places in Japan to relax (aside from a bamboo forest). Sit and listen to the music and be respectful… this place is a sonic temple. Pro-tip: when entering open the door slowly and only half way… it squeaks really loud if you try to go all the way! People will stare like you’re in an 80s film. Also yes there’s a gachapon toy of the sign… don’t ask why or how, much is the mystery of the universe.

Google
A hidden gem for music lovers, this place offers a unique and immersive experience in classical music appreciation. Conversation is not allowed, allowing visitors to fully absorb the rich sounds from a top-tier sound system while enjoying a carefully brewed coffee. The deep respect for artists is evident, as their names are announced before each record plays. It’s a fascinating glimpse into how Japan embraces Western culture, making it a must-visit for those curious about this cultural intersection. Located just outside the bustle of Shibuya, it provides a peaceful retreat. Though the coffee is pricey at 700 yen, the ambiance and experience make it well worth it. A favorite among locals, with few tourists, adding to its authentic charm.

Totally unique and interesting concept...a must see if you’re into classical music and coffee. As others have said, the inside is gothic feeling like that of an old church. Then on the wall are massive speakers blasting classical music. All seats point towards this wall, as though it were the stage. They announce what is playing and take requests. Coffee was good and staff friendly. The expectation is that you are quiet there, so keep that in mind. A truly fascinating place.

A listening bar where time has slowed. No talking. No food. Vinyl and analog music played in a hi-fi atmosphere. Delicious drip coffee. Smooth body with the expectation of a “bite” I connect with dark roast coffee; which was non existent. The perfect amount of cream accompanied the cup. Service was executed efficiently even though the person working was switching between many tasks. A truly phenomenal experience I would recommend anyone looking to enjoy a coffee break from the busy-ness of the city.

Google
Outstanding little coffee shop where you can sit and relax for a minute while listening to classical music. I had the iced coffee and listened to the first movement of al Beethovens Tempest Sonata. I will definitely return one day!

Google
A unique cafe meant to give visitors the feeling that they are attending a classical music concert. Famous classical music works are constantly being played there. A few things to be aware of: 1. They only serve drinks. No food. 2. Customers are expected to be quiet 3. Opening hours are very limited - the place only opens at around noon

Yelp
Really, really cool and chill place in shibuya to be quiet, have some traditional matcha, and listen to amazing classical music on crazy amazing sound system with giant speakers and very cool ambiance. It's a nice slice of peace from the hustle and bustle outside on the streets of shibuya. No pics allowed, no talking, just quiet listening and enjoyment. It's very few places to get to do this nowadays so it's kind of cool to experience. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Lion Cafe in Shibuya is my favorite place in Tokyo. A listening cafe that only plays classical musics. A beautiful quiet atmosphere that is relaxing and invigorating, both. Many things in Tokyo exist that cannot be replicated anywhere in the world. Decades ago when many people did not have access to good sound systems or had limitations from small apartments, listening cafes served a good purpose. Now it is still a window into a contemplative moment within a stressful world. The coffees are nice and the seating is fine. Everyone is reading or doing their things with a cup of coffee. The famous ancient speakers are quite nice but they really just sound old- an analog sound from a different world. The resonance of timeless forests. When I was there last they were playing a Fritz Reiner lp of Also Sprach Zaruthustra on RCA.

Yelp
When you enter this traditional coffee place in the mid of Shibuya, you think you just traveled back in time. Dimmed lights introduce you to a two floor coffee shop where people sit at their table in silence, sipping coffee, reading a book, drawing or just keeping their eyes shut. All around, you can listen to great classical music played by an old style vinyl system connected to two gigantic wood speakers. This place gets four stars instead of five mainly because the seats are pretty old and somehow uncomfortable and because, unfortunately, they let people smoke.

Yelp
Next time I am going to spend more time here, having classical playing with great sound quality having some tea and disconnecting from my cell phone, was a slice of heaven. Next time I won't rush this place.

Yelp
Wow-I've never seen anything like this place. Totally silent, everyone sits in the (plentiful) seating and sips very good coffee/matcha and listens to classical music played by the barista.
