The Best 9 Hostels in Amsterdam (Updated 2025)

"I appreciate this European hostel chain for its two Amsterdam locations (City West and Amstel) when I want a quiet stay—both are fairly big, laid-back, and not for partying travelers. The beds are soft, the hostels are clean, spacious, and comfortable, and there are lots of outlets to charge electronics; they also offer a fairly decent breakfast, and I tend to choose them when I want a calm, non-partying atmosphere." - Matthew Kepnes

This is definitely more of a hostel than a hotel but the price reflects that. It was fully booked the night we stayed and the communal areas were incredibly busy with a long wait for check in. They messed up our check in and despite giving us room keys, marked us a no show on booking.com, I suspect in an attempt to avoid their fees?! ||Our room had 3 bunks and slept 6. It was v basic. Uncomfortable pillows, nowhere to hang clothes. Bathroom was fine. Good air conditioning. ||10 mins on train into Amsterdam centre. ||I wouldn’t return as prefer a nicer hotel room but if you need to keep costs down and don’t mind very basic accomodation, then it’s fine.

The rooms are the cleanest I have ever seen in any hotel/hostel. The sound insulation is incredible. It was very, very quiet even with lots of pupils on the floor. The vegetable options for breakfast are great (lots of cucumber, tomatoe, bell pepper). The short walk to Amstel station is a plus too. One gets around and to the Central Station easily. Everybody was really friendly. A really good and relaxing stay.

My experience was goods but there’s two things this hotel could improve:||-I think they should refurbish the guest kitchen. Was too small given the amount of people who used it. ||-The temperature of the room. It’s always the same temperature and if you feel cold or warm, you can only change upto 3 degrees, up or down. Sometimes We were cold, and couldn’t put the temperature more than 23 degrees.

Overall decent, only became better once my partner and I switched rooms. For the shared rooms, imagine that you are sharing a hotel bedroom with strangers. It could be made better by curtains on the beds and a kitchen that actually worked properly as promised. Would stay again only if I booked a private room.

DO NOT STAY AT THIS HOTEL IF YOU VALUE YOUR MONEY AND BASIC HOTEL GUEST RIGHTS. We stayed at this hotel recently and had one of the worst experiences I’ve ever encountered. After only staying 1 night, we woke up to be informed that due to a water leak, the hotel had no running water or electricity. We were told we would be moved to their sister hotel in the city centre however, hours passed with no action, and by midnight, we were suddenly told the other hotel was full and we needed to leave the property. Keep in mind, this was during an extremely busy weekend (world pride festival and several music events) when all nearby accommodation was fully booked. There were five of us (young women) - and we made it clear how unsafe and unreasonable it was to be kicked out late at night with nowhere to go. Only after pushing back were we allowed to stay, still with no electricity or water for a further 3 days. We were told by the district manager, in writing, that we would receive a full refund due to the situation. Since then, we have received no updates, no apology, and no refund despite multiple attempts to follow up. This is completely unacceptable. The hotel failed to provide basic services, failed to follow through on their own commitments, and have ignored all communication since. This entire experience was unprofessional, dangerous, and exploitative. To treat paying guests like this – especially during a major international event when you know alternative accommodation is non-existent – is appalling. Do yourself a favour and stay far away from this hotel and its affiliates. They do not care about your safety, comfort, or experience. They only care about your money – and clearly, they don’t feel any urgency about giving it back when they fail to deliver even the most basic of services.

The service was a bit disappointing. I felt limited since I couldn’t even get a simple coffee, and the prices inside the hotel were very high—especially for snacks and some lobby activities, where you always have to pay extra. The room had issues: the air conditioning didn’t work well, the closet was very small and placed awkwardly next to the bed, and the metal door could even be unsafe. Inside the closet, there was some dust, although the room itself was generally clean and the bathroom was clean too. We also faced problems with the lack of hot water for showering. Breakfast was okay, but nothing special.

If you are traveling and don't want to stay at shady cheap hostels or with lot of people or loud sound. Then meininger is best suited for you. This hostel is generally clean and will give you peace without paying hefty money. Yes it's quite expensive than cheaper hostels but you get the service as well. They have kitchen for guests and you can refill water from water filter there. They have some games as well to play. It's near to the station so its very convenient. The staff was nice. The best part is that you can cook food for yourself and they also have all the utilities to cook food also the fridge where you can keep your stuffs there.

I paid €100+ for 2 nights in a 6person coed dorm. One of the nights was a friday of a holiday weekend, so I understand that prices increase when demand is higher, however, I don’t feel like the amenities in the room matched the price. I paid around €50 for a thursday night & around €90 for the friday of Easter weekend. I think for the price, guests should receive real pillows instead of those cheap flat ones, and I believe the bunks should have privacy curtains. The lobby and communal areas were great & the rooms were clean & nice except for my above complaints. The staff was friendly & helpful, and I would recommend staying here, however, I think they have room for improvements given the price.
