The Best Things to Do in Bali, the Island of the Gods | Condé Nast Traveler

"On the southern tip of the Bukit Peninsula, Pantai Melasti is a 1.2-mile stretch of Balinese coastline that feels like a postcard-perfect paradise, yet is remarkably easy to reach. Its soft white sand backs onto dramatic limestone cliffs, and its waters offer calm, glass-clear shallows and a sandy bottom ideal for swimming, paddleboarding, and kayaking. Unlike many beaches in Uluwatu, you don’t have to trek down (and back up) a steep set of stairs to reach the shore. Instead, a smooth, scenic drive with views of the Indian Ocean brings you directly to a parking lot just a few feet from the sand. Once you arrive, you’ll find ample amenities like changerooms, showers, bathrooms, beach clubs with sun loungers, and warungs (local restaurants). All these conveniences make Melasti popular with local families and day-trippers, so mornings or off-peak times are best if you want a more serene experience. Still, thanks to its long curve of sand, you can usually find a pocket of calm." - Julia Eskins

Tempted by the great reviews, I chose Melasti Beach for a family visit. Upon arrival, we were greeted by an entrance gate charging 15,000 IDR per person. Not cheap, but fine, there was no alternative. Since we arrived by Grab, we were also required to pay an additional 5,000 IDR just for the car to enter. The beach itself is divided into several sections: Left side: small, calm, no waves, no facilities, very quiet. Middle section: waves and strong currents. On the day of our visit, there were no swimming signs, yet people were swimming anyway, near a boat. Right side (towards White Rock): better swimming conditions and fun waves. If you want sunbeds, the price is 200,000 IDR, which is quite high. To be clear: the beach itself deserves 5 stars. However, I am deliberately giving 1 star to draw attention to the management and local authorities. Maybe when ratings start dropping, someone will finally wake up. The biggest issue came when we tried to leave. Ordering Grab or Gojek from the beach level is not allowed. Drivers are blocked from entering past the barrier at the bottom of the steep road. We were traveling with a small child and had no cash. The lady at the gate explained that they “support local drivers,” who only accept cash payments from the bottom. I would have happily used a local driver, but we live in the 21st century. Card payments or phone payments via NFC are standard elsewhere. If that option existed, I would have paid without hesitation. On top of that, local drivers were asking almost double the price compared to app-based rides. In the end, we had to carry our child up the steep road, where our Grab driver kindly waited for us. There are many other beaches in Bali that are just as beautiful, cheaper, and far easier to access.

A must-visit beach. Every time I’m in Bali, I always make time to come here. The waves are quite big but still okay for kids. Parking is close to the beach, and there are plenty of options beach clubs if you want something more fancy, and local warungs too. The beach is clean, and I really love the sound of the waves, so calming. We can easily spend the whole day here and never get bored. We always go to the local warungs; they have bathrooms and places to rinse off as well. Definitely very recommended if you’re looking for a beach where kids can also play with the waves.

Beautiful beach with amazing views and clear water. We enjoyed swimming and spending time there, but the shore is quite rocky, so it’s not very comfortable to walk barefoot. Still, it’s a nice spot to relax, take photos, and enjoy the landscape. Worth a visit if you’re exploring the area.

The best beach in Bali! Perfect beach with crystal clear water where you can snorkel, coarse sand and good restaurants on the beach with beach bed option. Few beach clubs are also along the coast which even offer kayak and paddle boat. Enjoyable for both adults as well as kids as this beach is nature’s swimming pool with no waves which makes it even more enjoyable. Highly recommended for a perfect sun and sand day!

If you want 2 chaise-lounge and don't have cash to pay the lifeguards, just go inside. The cashier has 3 modes of payment. The waves at this beach are not for novice swimmers! Be sure to accompany those of your party who want to have fun in the waves but who may need help to return to the beach. And take a break, even if you are enjoying waves hopping, it takes more out of you than you will expect. The change room is primitive and the showers only work sporadically.

This is the best beach I have ever visited. The scenery is absolutely stunning, with crystal-clear turquoise water, clean white sand, and dramatic limestone cliffs surrounding the area. The beach is well maintained, spacious, and not overly crowded, making it very comfortable to relax and enjoy the view. Access to the beach is also quite easy, with good roads and facilities available. Whether you come for swimming, taking photos, or simply enjoying the sunset, Melasti Beach is truly a must-visit destination in Bali

Melasti Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in South Bali, famous for its dramatic limestone cliffs and crystal-clear water. The road access is very good, making the trip comfortable and enjoyable. My guests really love stopping here for photos, relaxing, and enjoying the ocean view. Pantai Melasti is perfect to combine with Uluwatu Temple, Padang Padang Beach, or a South Bali tour. As a local driver and guide, I always make sure my guests feel safe, relaxed, and get the best experience. If you plan to visit Melasti Beach and explore South Bali, you can find me on Google: Komang – Bali Luxury Driver Tour Service.
