After eating numerous variations of American/New England food over a week plus road trip, I was excited to try something ~different. Melaza definitely fit the bill. We opted to sit outside, which was lovely, but the service seemed slower. Every one working was very friendly and helpful, but it was slightly off. We started with the chicken empanadas, and omg, they were amazing!! Best I've ever had, by far. The crust was perfectly fried, and the guava sauce was sweet and sour, pairing nicely with the tender chicken. The empanadas were much lighter than they looked, and I could have eaten way more of them. But, I wanted to pace myself as we had our entrees, plus salad and rolls coming, or so we thought. Other pictures on Yelp suggest little cibatta rolls are served, but we got one very small, thin slice of baguette each, and about as much lettuce as was the garnish for the empanadas. There were 2 slices of strawberry on each "salad," and a fantastic orange vinaigrette. The portions were a bit surprising, to say the least. The cilantro oil served with our sad but tasty bread slices was also fabulous. Because of that, I asked for a bit more bread. We received a basket with 4 more slices total, which was fine, but also discovered a charge on the bill for $1.50, which was annoying. The menu says these items are included with our entrees (which were $26 and $34, respectively), and the size of the servings with the upcharge felt insulting. I will forgive, though because the entrees were great. I had the skirt steak, which was like butter. It came with a garlicky pesto and fresh tomatoes (yum), seasoned veggies (summer squash, zucchini and carrots, also yum), and some very buttery mashed potatoes. Loved it. My DH got the pork shank, which had the same veggies and potatoes. It had a sweet and sour guava glaze, and pulled right off the bone effortlessly. Sooo good. For some reason (maybe the kitchen was closing?), our server asked us if we wanted dessert while we were half way through dinner. I already knew I wanted to try the flan, but I wished she hadn't brought it before we finished dinner. In the end, I only had a few bites. It had a nice texture but it was very sweet.
Ultimately, we had a great time but there were some missteps. I also would recommend that they consider a dessert version of their empanadas, because that would be awesome.
