Guide to Genoa, the Italian Riviera's Hidden Gem

"A modern, quietly situated hotel on a tree-lined street that feels part of the local fabric despite belonging to an international chain; it offers a peaceful atmosphere, attentive service, and easy walking access to the city center without the maze-like bustle." - Carrie Dennis Carrie Dennis Carrie Dennis is a New York City-based writer and editor with more than a decade of content strategy experience. "While many Italian hotels rest on the country’s historic laurels by harking back to bygone eras, from the opulence of the Renaissance to the sleek design heaven of the 1960s, the Meliá Génova—itself an art deco icon—is confident enough to stride straight into contemporary decor. Originally a steel manufacturer’s headquarters, long known as the luxe Bentley Hotel, its geometric lines and burnished metals evoke midcentury styles. But the hotel is undeniably modern and understated, with its bright and airy rooms, designer furnishings, abstract artwork, and luxurious touches like hot tubs on balconies. The serene, Zen-inspired subterranean pool and spa area demonstrates the Meliá’s fearlessness in breaking from Italian Riviera traditions, a fact only reinforced by the sultry restaurant and bar, which serves Spanish, French, and Greek cuisine—near heresy in a country that prides itself on its excellent food. But the bets have paid off: not only does the Meliá attract glamorous out-of-towners, but even the locals know it’s one of the hottest spots in town, as evidenced by the lively scene found in the bar each night."

"Though it’s a member of a Spanish chain, the Hotel Meliá Genova could hardly feel more authentically Genovese. This is a city that’s known for its urban edge, but the Carignano, just to the southeast of the financial district, is unexpectedly green. It’s here that a wealthy industrialist built this imposing villa, which now better serves the city as one of the finest lodgings in town." - Tablet Hotels

Lovely and calm hotel, the rooms were clean and tidy. The best part about this hotel is the staff, who are all attentive and always ready to help. The breakfast is good, and lunch aswell. For dinner the menu is quite small, and didn’t really live up to the prices. The spa was a hit for our 4 year old, but for the price(20 euro per person) we expected a bit more. The room is spacious and nicely decorated, but the soundproofing between floors could be better. Although nothing too annoying. The area around the hotel is quiet, and there is not a lot going on. Great if you just want a calm and quiet location.

Amazing hotel chain. After my accommodations fell through, Giacomo was able to get me in here last minute. While expensive, it came with a comfy bed, excellent dinner recommendations and reservations, great location, and the nicest staff at any hotel anywhere. Definitely going to be staying with them regularly after this experience.

What a fantastic hotel and an excellent position in Genoa. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay with a great room with a good sized balcony. The staff were exceptional with nothing being too much trouble from the moment our taxi pulled up until we departed. The breakfast was perfect with a significant amount of choice for all palates. The spa was excellent but sadly did not use this. My wife and I each had a massage which was very good. We will look to return to this great hotel.

Hotel Meliá was well located to all the attractions in Genoa. Quieter neighborhood which suited us very well. 6th floor room where we stayed had a lovely balcony with beautiful views. The room was spacious and comfortable bed. The breakfast buffet had a good variety. The service of all the staff were amazing. From the reception, to the concierge to the valet , hostesses… everyone were friendly and kind and went out of their way to ensure we were comfortable and enjoying our stay, the hospitality team was phenomenal. We will definitely be back to stay again. Many thanks Melia for making our stay in Genoa memorable.

This was our second time at the Melia and both stays have been fantastic due to the personalized service of Francesca and the always friendly and helpful staff! Special thank you to Alesia in the restaurant each day with great tips. The Spa is the best amenity ever for the beautiful city of Genova as there are a lot of steps, your legs will appreciate the pool jets, steam room and varied treatment showers! Definitely recommend treating oneself to a room with a terrace, great way to dry clothes over an extended stay like ours and of course beautiful sea views! Breakfast was outstanding and evening dinners were exceptional. Convenient taxi stand right outside and elevator to the city center a block away. Short walk to the boardwalk overlooking the sea. Grocery, Bakery, Pharmacy and a number of restaurants close by. Quiet area of the city as well, highly recommend and will be back!|Melia Customer Service Reps are impressive on the phone and eager to assist. Enjoy!

Google
The best choice in Genoa fora a 5 start modern hotel. Rooms are great, particularly those with the terrace. Nice and safe area in the center of town. Parking available and you can leave the car and walk everywhere. Staff very good. Breakfast could be better. We will definitely go back.

POSITIVE:|GOOD WELCOME ON ARRIVAL BY THE YOUNGER STAFF The receptionists were very courteous on our arrival, as was also the younger baggage porter. Another porter was also very helpful when we left with finding a taxi for us.||VIEW View from our room was quite nice to the rooftops of the city centre. Probably one of the better rooms in the hotel, on high floor.|||NEGATIVE:|ROOM The room isn't very elegant, but very basic with IKEA furniture and small for a 5-star hotel standard room. I have seen many equivalent 3 and 4-star hotel rooms.||LOUD AIRCONDITIONING The air conditioning is keeping a loud, whistling noise, that lasts for minutes and can occur at any moment of the day, including multiple times during the night.||NONEXISTENT CLEANING We left our room on the 5th floor on May 3rd at 10.00 in the morning and placed the green please clean the room-tag on the door. But when we returned at 14.40 in the afternoon, no cleaning had been done, the room was still a complete mess. This was particularly upsetting because I had broken a glass in the room, and despite collecting the majority of the glass pieces away myself, there were some very small but sharp pieces left on the floor, and the floor really would have needed to be wiped with a mop, to avoid injuring my feet. Now without cleaning, I was forced to wear slippers inside all the time and tread carefully, just in case. The toilet paper also ran out shortly after this, because due to the lack of cleaning new paper hadn't been brought. This was far from 5-star service. We didn't report this lack of cleaning to the reception on purpose to test if we would get cleaning even the next day. The next day, a different cleaner finally cleaned our room, but she also forgot to bring more tissues. When my husband saw the cleaner on the hallway the next day and asked for more toilet paper and tissues, she just shoved them into his hands and rushed off instead of going into the room and placing them to their rightful places by herself.||POOR SERVICE FROM THE OLDER RECEPTIONIST MAN I went to the reception on May 4th to ask for help and the staff didn’t even greet me, let alone lift their eyes from their desk, until I had to greet them first. Then I asked them if they could call my husband for me, as my phone was out of battery and he wasn’t at the hotel and I didn't know where he was. The older man at the reception replied by asking for my passport number before offering any kind of help and I told him that he must mean the phone number, that he can call to. Then he said on the phone to my husband that I’m here waiting at the hotel, and secretly hung up. He then pretended to keep talking on the phone and asking several times if he may pass the phone to me so he can talk to me, and then when I was given the phone, it was silent. I actually wondered whether my husband really just hang up the phone to me?! My husband revealed to me later that the receptionist had cut off the call already after informing him that I was at the hotel, and that he never actually asked him if he may pass the phone to me, while pretending to be doing so multiple times. Then the older receptionist refused to call again and directed me to be helped by the younger receptionist man, who actually helped me instead of playing ridiculous tricks. He called and immediately asked if I could be passed the phone and I was able to talk to him by myself. After all this, they still had the audacity to automatically add a hefty 40 euro tip to our final bill. Due to this poor service, we asked for the tip removed from our bill. Also a first time for us that a hotel just automatically adds a tip to the bill.||MISLEADING ADVERTISING ABOUT ROOFTOP JACUZZI On their website and in booking.com, they advertise with pictures of a rooftop jacuzzi and having breakfast on rooftop, these are the very first pictures that they show of the hotel. On their website, they list that they have a heated pool, an indoor swimming pool, a whirlpool bath and pool loungers. However, it isn’t mentioned at all, that the rooftop with the jacuzzi, with sun loungers and rooftop breakfast possibility is only reserved for the use of one Presidential suite. Other guests may be lured in with the pictures, but will have no possibility to enjoy it, even though many other 3/4/5 star hotels offer similar rooftop breakfast or rooftop jacuzzi possibility to the use of all the guests. Additionally, many 4- and 5-star hotels offer private jacuzzis in room for suites, but in here, even in Junior suite you won’t have a private jacuzzi.||DISAPPOINTING INDOOR POOL AREA The indoor pool area is advertised as a heated pool and an indoor swimming pool, but actually there is only one heated indoor swimming pool. It is also advertised as having a tropical showers, but they were out of use. It is also advertised as having a whirpool bath, jacuzzi and hydromassage bathtub, but don't expect a jacuzzi - one that the receptionist woman also advertised to me on the phone - as this whirlpool/jacuzzi/hydromassage is all only one hydromassage corner within the main pool. The whole pool area looks dated and badly in need of renovation as the tiles look tired and some of them have even fallen off, and there are sealants sticking from the wall in the main pool. The shower handles were straight from the 70s and need to be replaced urgently. Nothing about this indoor pool area was worthy of a 5-star hotel. The indoor pool is only available upon reservation, 1 hour for 20 euros p.p. This also isn’t mentioned anywhere on their website.||NO PERSONALIZED WELCOME GIFT AND LIMITED BATHROOM AMENITIES Our room had a welcome water, as there should be in a 4 and 5-star hotels, but there was no personalized welcome gift at all, as there should be at a 5-star hotel. At 5 stars, there should be a wide range of bathroom amenities available; yet we only had cotton buds, cotton pads and a toothbrush. Where were all the others, as this isn’t a particularly wide selection.||BREAKFAST Breakfast was good, but similar to what you would expect at 4-star hotels. At 5-stars and for the price of 25 euros p.p. we expect more variety. Even the omelettes weren't included in the price, but were available for extra charge.||LOCATION The location is a bit far from the carruggi and the old town center. This would have been forgiven, if everything else had been better. On the other hand, the hotel is located in a very clean and safe area.||In conclusion, I cannot understand how this hotel can tout itself as 5 stars and we will skip Melia in the future.

Yelp
Thanks to the staff at Melia Genova for helping us to celebrate a monumental birthday stay. Our room was very pleasant and the staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Would highly recommend the hotel and will stay again if I'm in the region.

Yelp
Melia is a well-located hotel, but this is not a 5-star hotel in my opinion. It's on the noisy side with the busy street and the service in the lobby, bar and restaurant certainly leaves room for improvement. Very beautifully decorated with lovely modern touches throughout. Bed is extremely comfortable, but some things clearly don't function properly such as some of the lights and also the TV in the bathroom. Shower is fabulous, but placement of some amenities made no sense.

Yelp
Beautiful room, quiet location and the breakfast was amazing. While the service was polite, it was often very slow and the cleaning staff was only on duty during the day. We liked the city and wanted to stay an extra day but they quoted us an outrageous price--twice what we had paid for the previous days--so we end up changing hotels for the last day.. Overall I'd stay there again if the price was right but doesn't live up to it's 5-star rating.

Yelp
Average and clean hotel. Clean room included a flat screen tv with limited free channels. No English speaking channels except for Fox News and CNN. Breakfast was only okay and continental style. Cannot see the water front from this hotel and not too many choice of restaurants near by. Bedding was comfortable and room included slippers and robe.

Yelp
One of the best hotels in Genoa. Great service. Excellent pool and gym. Convenient location 5 min walk to train and shopping district. Rooms are very comfortable. Would be very happy to stay here again.
