Aveiro Is Called the 'Venice of Portugal' — Here's Why

"Meliá Ria Hotel & Spa, which sits by the Ria de Aveiro lagoon, is an ideal spot for those looking to stay close to the action while also getting pampered. The contemporary hotel is home to a luxurious spa offering an array of treatments, along with an indoor pool ready for anyone who wants to take a dip." - Travel + Leisure Editors

This was a very good hotel for our needs. Location is away from the main city centre but only a 15 min walk and as it is canal side there is a pleasant aspect. |We had a great stay, room very comfortable, good shower, nice eco touches with a nod to sustainability.|The lift was slow and one out of action. Firm beds which suited us.|The restaurant was delicious, we wanted an easy option after a day of cycling and the food was sublime, especially the duck and the local dessert. Breakfast was plentiful and lots of choices.|Staff were very helpful with our bike storage.

Really fabulous stay here! The staff was so accommodating to us and allowed us to sleep in a different room just for the night while a crying baby was our neighbor in current room, just to be sure we slept well. They also don’t douse the rooms in chemical cleaning sprays and overuse hormone disrupting fragrance which is why we checked out of the original hotel we stayed in, it was un breathable! This place also has a great included breakfast, a full gym (to use for €7) and nice clean rooms. The beds are super hard but that is common in most of Europe. Highly recommend.

Best hotel I’ve ever stayed at. Wanna know THE most important thing about this Hotel? The room was not doused in any toxic and hormone disrupting perfume and cleaning chemical smells. They are Environmentally Conscious and I appreciate their providing comfort and ease to travelers. The bed was comfortable the staff was friendly and helpful. We had a great visit in Aveiro.

We were at different hotels. Melia's hotels are the best for the rooms, pillows are stunning, the environment, this brand is so different and super. I'm looking forward to coming back sooner to rest and enjoy my staying.

Having tried to book a room in this place via Booking.com, as always these clowns claim to be pet friendly but never tell you the terms and conditions prior to booking, wasting peoples time. So, we booked and told them we are coming with a very friendly Labrador dog. Now, the terms and conditions are released: From Google Translate: Estimado/a Sr/a. Jacques Prince, Please note that you have reserved your reservation at the Hotel Melia Ria. Please inform us that we have animal estimates for our Hotel, with a maximum weight of 20kg. The supplement for an animal park is estimated at €35.00/night. Food and beverage standards for the Hotel Melia Ria • We eat 2 animals for a quarto, sending them to a maximum of 20kg of weight • Supplement for estimated pet park: €35.00/quart/night • Pet access is not permitted in the Restaurant, Bar and Health Club area. • Animals cannot remain in public areas of the Hotel. Your passage in these areas must be rapid and your animal must be transported in a safe or suitable transport box. • When entering and keeping pets, you must always be at the hotel's garage. • No check in must present the vaccine package and the minimum requirement for conformity. • When you go outside, you do not have to worry about the responsibility of the host to collect the waste from your animal. • Os animais nunca podem ficar sozinhos nos quartos de hotel. Devem estar semper acompanhados. • The hotel is responsible for any payment caused by someone else caused by other customers or at the hotel, during its stay. If you wish to reserve at the animal park, please inform us. Attempt Eulália Vieira (Sorry for the grammar - Google translate) Well, I'll have to chop my dogs legs off for a start as she is over 20kg and for 2 nights it is 70 euros. Lol... Not pet friendly. Not transparent. Avoid.

Not impressed. Not good value. Not near the town centre and main tourist area. View from room industrial rather than of the Ria. Tesla Destination Charger not available to guests. Signing up to the available public charging a complete pain as no stable phone or WiFi signal in the garage, so had to go up and down to reception to get app to download and sign up. SPA busy with non hotel guests, so booking was needed and time available not suitable. Room over warm with no control available, opening window gets noise from trains and traffic. WiFi in room slow and unstable.

We loved it and extended our stay. The spa is small but perfect. On point jets in the jet pool, good swimming pool which is also suitable for an actual exercise. The Turkish bath was superb. Dry sauna needed a bit more isolation (the door wasn't isolated. Very friendly and helpful staff in the spa and the hotel in general. I had for different treatments in the spa, all very good. Breakfast was rich, but for us there were some vegetables missing. There were none, but there are fresh fruits. The room was comfortable and nice sized. Shower was excellent! It's 15 minutes slow and nice walk to the center, but it's so quiet and beautiful area. Many cafes and restaurants 2-5 minutes walk. Highly recommend!

Yelp
What a huge disappointment this hotel is. After traveling on the Camino for several weeks and staying at various Alberque's I was looking forward to being spoiled at a high class hotel for a few days. Unfortunately, I received better service at any Alberque I stayed at then I did at Melia Ria. Everything at this expensive hotel is an extra. Want to use the gym; its an additional charge. Want to use the pool; you must pay and they require everyone wears a bathing cap(the cap is also a added charge). Pool time and exercise time is also limited to 1 hour total per day. The hotel looks to charge for every little thing. They provide in room, coffee and free breakfast; however, they charge for coffee at 14:00 but it's free if you go to your room and make it yourself. If you are out of in-room coffee, the front desk gives you as many pods as you want for free. In general, the staff is friendly but does not understand Customer Service. The bar is open but you have to search for the bartender. Then they tell you "its easier for me if you pay now", so when I want a 2nd glass of wine I have to start searching for the bartender and start the process all over again. I don't know why they couldn't take my room number and let me run a tab. Next time, I will stay at an Alberque or a less expensive hotel where customers are appreciated and I can be better served.

Yelp
This is a nice hotel that is just down from the shopping and square. Nice and quite inside and out. The food isn't bad but I would say the breakfast is the best of the three. Great little gym and spa to help keep you in shape and relaxed. Restaurants and bars are all within walking distance.
