Colorado’s Overlooked San Luis Valley Offers Scenic Desert With Artistic Flair

"In 2019, apparel designer Jessica Lovelace, a Santa Fe transplant, converted a run-down 1940s motor lodge into Mellow Moon, a minimalist hotel popular with the skiing and mountain-biking crowds; her husband, filmmaker Samuel Bricker, operates a bike shop on site."

We had a great stay at the Mellow Moon Lodge! The rooms were big and clean. Loved the canteen that had all kinds of odds and ends that you might need, and possibly forgot at home, while traveling. The water refill station was a plus. It was also so nice that we could bring our dog. Lauren and her team were super responsive when we had questions and checked in on us periodically to see if we needed fresh towels or linens (we stayed four nights!). It was super easy to navigate at the Mellow Moon Lodge, despite the Lunar Lounge being closed for the holidays. Highly recommend and we sure hope to head back when the next powder dump happens at Wolf Creek!

A Total Hidden Gem — Exactly What a Mountain Motel Should Be Mellow Moon Lodge is one of those rare places that reminds you why you love road trips in the first place. This is not some cookie-cutter chain — it’s a perfect little roadside motel with soul. Clean, comfortable, thoughtfully cared for, and full of quiet charm. The rooms are cozy and welcoming, the beds are comfortable, and everything just works the way it should. You can tell real people take pride in this place. The location is fantastic — ideal for exploring the San Juans, fishing, hiking, or just soaking in the peaceful pace of Del Norte. It’s calm, relaxing, and refreshingly unpretentious — the kind of spot where you sleep well and wake up happy. And the hospitality truly sets it apart. Friendly, genuine, and welcoming without being intrusive. You’re treated like a guest, not a reservation number. That warmth makes all the difference. Mellow Moon Lodge nails what so many places miss: comfort, character, cleanliness, and care — all at a great value. It’s the kind of place you’re excited to find, grateful to stay at, and happy to recommend. If you’re looking for a clean, charming, no-nonsense place to stay with real Colorado personality, this is it. We’ll absolutely be back. Five stars, easy.

We had an excellent stay. The hotel as a whole is just a nice, comfortable place to be. Our room was clean and very comfortable. Our dogs also enjoyed the stay. The attached coffee shop is amazing. The quality of the coffee is incredible, and the baked goods are the best around. The rest of the amenities really round out the whole stay. We’ll definitely be staying here again!

Staying at Mellow Moon was hands-down one of the best hotel experiences I’ve had in Colorado. From the moment I arrived, the place lived up to its name—calm, welcoming, and full of good vibes. The atmosphere is cozy and thoughtfully designed, making it feel less like a hotel and more like a peaceful retreat. If you’re looking for a unique, relaxing, and memorable stay in southern Colorado, Mellow Moon is an absolute must. I can’t wait to come back!

The Mellow Moon is amazing. It’s a local business that makes you know that you made the right decision to stay in Del Norte. The rooms are spacious and comfortable. The coffee shop is full service with an incredibly personable staff. The mellow moon is within walking distance to a grocery store and plenty of restaurants. The Mellow Moon is trusting in that they have an Honor based pantry convenience store. They have some great food. Freeze dried meals that look amazing and some smaller snacks that are delicious and exotic and all natural. Lauren is a Fantastic Hostess and will help with whatever needs you may have. All you have to do is ask.

This is a perfect “don’t judge a book by its cover.” The outside doesn’t look like much but OMG the room was gorgeous. A mix of industrial/ modern with a retro flare. Huge king size bed, beautiful modern shower . My fav was the retro teal fan n retro heater. They had a common area with a microwave and honor system with unique local items. Only downfall was tv lagged during movie and no paper towels in common area. I was looking at an oil item n it was leaking but no way to clean my hands. I wud totally stay there again and reccomend it even to my picky mom.

Stylishly renovated motel, every detail exquisitely thought out in a modern take on the Western theme! Luxuriant beds and showers in a quiet setting with easy access to the stunning wilderness of Elephant Rocks, Penitente Canyon and Creede. Don’t miss the excellent coffee shop (pastries and coffee are superb) and stylish Rodeo Mercantile.

I was driving through Colorado with some friends and we had the pleasure of staying in Mellow Moon Lodge for a night. My room was great, it had everything I needed for a night stay. If you are driving through Del Norte and need a place to stay, definitely check and see if there is vacancy here. Also, the on site cafe has free coffee in the morning for guests and it was delicious! Just what you need before hitting to road.

Yelp
Excellent, responsive customer service. Great room at a great price. Loved the updated Cantina!

Yelp
If you are looking for a recently remodeled, small boutique place to stay in Del Norte, the Mellow Moon Lodge is a good option. They have quality beds, superior linens, and other health and beauty items available. The room was quiet, the bed comfortable and the location convenient for visiting Southern Colorado sites, like the Great Sand Dunes National Park, the many San Luis Valley wildlife preserves or the many waterfalls and hiking trails. Checking-in was efficient-- the owner communicates (everything) via text, so the room and entry code were texted to me before we arrived. Got parked and inside in a minute max. Unfortunately, I think the owner has focused more (solely) on setting up a boutique hotel with luxury products and neglected some basics of managing a hotel. For example, it is sterile. There is no human or personal interaction. Most of my best memories from hotel stays are from the greeting by the front desk personnel or their recommendations for what to see, do or eat. At the Mellow Moon there is no one to talk to -- if you have questions just read the pamphlet in your room or scan a QR code and read on your phone. Lots to read - some of which I didn't want to know. Alternatively, you can text a question and get a response at some point. A couple of other points. The room floor was sandy. Bring slippers. Room got really cold at night. If you need to hang a coat, it will end up on your coffee and tea service. The coffee came is a bag -not good or very tasty. For a no smoking property, there were cigarette butts throughout the parking lots. No restaurant or breakfast available. Looks like more renovations may change some otfthat by Fall 2024.

Yelp
The location and the bed are the positives for this historic motel. The location was very good in that it is downtown Del Norte, close to shops and restaurants. It was a challenge to find the entrance to the motel. The motel sits down below street level and the entry looks like the entrance to an alleyway from the main street. We had to circle the block a couple of times before we realized where we needed to enter (note that it is one way). The bed was comfortable. We booked this motel for one night in early March ($146.38 for a king). The initial text messages from Lauren, the motel owner, seemed nice - upbeat, welcoming, informative. However, the reality is that once you're at the motel there is no customer service to speak of. Everything is hands-off and impersonal. You check-in remotely. The doors to the rooms are keyless entry (which negates the need for someone to hand you a key card). We wondered how secure our rooms were. The owner requests (by text) a credit card number in advance of your stay (even though we used Booking.com) "just in case" you purchase incidentals from the not-staffed, "on your honor" Rodeo Mercantile. We went to the lobby several times, and it was consistently unstaffed. All communications with Lauren were by text. It seemed to us the property is mostly a passive income stream for her - she could have been clear across the country during our stay for all we knew. It's nice that she "redevelops" old motels and hotels, but more is needed for Mellow Moon. Guests should know the bathroom does not have a normal door on it. It's a barn door that slides and is always somewhat open, so not a lot of privacy. Our room (#8) had a mini-split unit that ran CONSTANTLY through the night, producing a major disruptive sound that made it impossible to sleep. (Think airplane circling a runway, getting ready to take off.) Another reviewer mentioned the noise in his review, so it seems this problem has gone unattended for several months. The window curtains do not close all the way, letting light in. The sink is quite tall, so shorter guests will have difficulties with it. Bottom line: Beware the lure of excellent marketing: a nice web page does not equate to "upscale" and "retreat." If you book a room at Mellow Moon because you need to sleep or work or just enjoy a nice getaway with your partner, forget it. I'm perplexed by the 5-star reviews.

Yelp
Lauren was a great communicator, place was very comfortable and amenities excellent. The breakfasts and coffee were delicious...

Yelp
Had a really awful customer service experience here. Inflexible policies and overall a hostile interaction. Very unnecessary and could have been easily avoided.

Yelp
This little spot is like an oasis in the desert. I love to hike, bike, be outdoors, etc. but that doesn't mean that I always want to camp or to stay in grungy digs. This is the kind of place I really appreciate surrounded by the outdoorsy community and lifestyle. We like nice things, too! Not only is this place aesthetically pleasing, it has soul, too. The room was completely clean, the shower had good water pressure and plenty of hot water, the bed was so comfortable, and the healthy in-room snacks were everything I keep at my own home, so I was very happy to see some favorites. The owner is very friendly and helpful with local tips, if you need them. Plus, room service for breakfast is stellar. The power briefly went out from a storm and they were still at my door shortly after 6:00 am. Not only do they offer pour over coffee, but it's actually good which can be hard to find at a quality coffee shop. If you're a biker, they have an on-site repair shop, which is a massive plus. I felt the most reenergized after my night here than any other on my trip. I could continue on my adventures and travels around the national parks and other outdoor areas with tons of energy.

Yelp
Loved this charming, super clean hotel. Being a converted motel we were not sure what to expect. Everything exceeded our expectations! Great staff and communication. Definitely would come back. This is a great combo of a boutique hotel meets laid back CO lodge.

Yelp
If you're passing through The Del Norte area, do yourself a favor and stay at the Mellow Moon. We happened upon this place in early 2021 and were incredibly surprised. We were doing another road trip this summer and decided to go slightly out of our way just to stay again. Del Norte is also a neat little town.

Yelp
We had a very nice stay at the Mellow Moon Lodge. This place is a wonderfully surprising gem in Del Norte. When you arrive, it looks like you might expect a nostalgic motor lodge to appear - and then you get inside the room and it's a refreshing combination of tasteful and retro decor. The room had a very fresh, clean, and updated appearance, and we especially liked all the attention given to making the environment delightfully different from the standard overnight places: the towels and linens that weren't just plain white, the environmentally conscious accoutrements, the coffees and teas that were specialized, etc. Well done! This is *definitely* a place worth searching out, and I will absolutely keep this at the top of my list of places to stay whenever I need an overnight in the area.

Yelp
We got snowed in and couldn't make it down the pass and this place took our last minute booking.. and i'm SO GLAD we chose this place. It is ADORABLE. Super accommodating. Super comfortable bed and pillows, VERY clean and it smells amazing in the room! I definitely recommend this place. This is truly a home away from home. We love this adorable little place.

Nice chill, clean and comfortable spot with modern look. Two thumbs up and a high-five.

Yelp
We didn't have any idea what kind of accommodations were checking in to for the night. Upon arrival the curb appeal was slightly lacking, but when we checked in we were warmly welcomed by the co-owner, Jess. She was very informative about places to dine and things to do in the area. Once we entered our room, we were pleasantly surprised to see our beautiful newly renovated room. These guys truly had a vision of the kind of vibe they wanted guests to feel during their stay. We will definitely make our way back to the Mello Moon to see what new projects they have completed and enjoy our time in Del Norte.

Yelp
We loved the Mellow Moon! An oasis of chic comfort during our summer road trip. Beautifully curated rooms, comfy beds, delicious snacks and wonderful staff - all around a great experience and highly recommend

Yelp
I do a lot of traveling and was really excited to stay at the Mellow Moon. I booked the hotel for a second night because we enjoyed it so much the first but my daughter became ill around 10 the morning before check in and I was forced to cancel. I was still charged the full amount despite the fact that we never even set foot in the room. I know there is a cancellation policy and I respect that but because I travel a lot with my daughter I have had to cancel last minute at least three other times at other hotels and this has NEVER happened. As a matter of fact, when other hotels find out about someone being ill, most offer to help in some way. Unfortunately, we received no sympathy and a charge of almost $200.

Yelp
Clean, comfortable, modern. A lovely spot! We definitely will return if we find ourselves in the area again!

Yelp
This place is a true diamond, I am giving them a 5 star review before even checking out. Staying at this hotel is a MUST if you find yourself in this neck of the woods (mountains). Jess was so helpful when checking in and gave us a blueprint of the town. Each room is decorated so perfectly and comes with all the amenities from comfy beds to smart TVs. Super clean and recently renovated rooms in a beautifully modern chic style. Truly an experience staying here in itself. The owners took a unique spin on a motel and it absolutely works! Highly recommend!

Yelp
What a great find! Stopped here for the night between climbing and backpacking trips. Super comfy room. Communication was quick. There's a laundromat across the street so we were able to get everything washed. Texted in the morning and coffee was brought to our room. They are working on getting an ice machine and still working on curb appeal but all in all a great experience!

Place is very nice. Great owners with bike shop. Really clean. Highly recommended. Recently remodeled. Pleasant oasis.

Yelp
mellow it is, nearly a ghost town. rooms are way too expensive for the area and for a motel.

Yelp
Hidden gem. Great service, adorable decor, amazing coffee and fresh local bread. Easy to find so no excuse to miss this one.

S B.

Yelp
Great experience. Loved the decor and super comfortable bed, heaven after so many nights camping. When we arrived it was hot and when we left there was snow on the ground. No issues with a/c or heat. Although I wish we could have visited more with the owners, that was hard to do since the lobby was closed due to COVID. Bonus was that each morning we were able to send a text to have our coffee delivered right to the door!

Yelp
Such a beautiful addition to Del Norte! Very comfortable rooms and exceptional service. The attention to detail and curated products (linens, snacks, coffee) really set this hotel apart from your run-of-the-mill motor lodge! Can't wait to go back!

Kurt P.

Yelp
Be aware, there's no air conditioning in these rooms and it gets very unpleasant at night. After a day out in the hot sun the last thing you want is to have a sleepless night sweating in bed! The place is way over priced for what you get. There's much better options in the area. Also, the website says dogs are welcome, but that's not really true, they charge $50 extra for the one night stay! How much cleaning is needed if your dog sleeps on the floor in the room with you?! Who in their right mind would pay $200 for one night is this hole in the wall?!

Yelp
This place has the best vibe! Loved the aesthetic and eco-friendliness. Perfect stop for our road trip + great rooms and super comfortable beds to recover from the day's adventures. The owner, Jess, is awesome too! Highly recommend.

Yelp
Great find! We stayed in the family suite with our pup. Recently redone - room is so cute with modern finishings and a kitchenette/fridge. From the road you would never guess. Perfect!

James R.

Yelp
This is a very unique, clean, pleasant and beautiful place. The rooms have vaulted ceilings with Ibiza white paint that makes the room feel spacious and peaceful. Mattress and linens are superb. In the fridge you will find healthy food for breakfast and snacking if you need it. Don't miss the Culina yogurts! The staff were nice, accommodating, and super COVID conscious. It was so nice we returned the following night instead staying in a typical chain hotel in Alamosa.

Yelp
We recently stayed at the Mellow Moon while on a road trip to Colorado. The hotel was centrally located to many amazing sites and really convenient. We stayed several days in Del Norte and traveled to the Great Sand Dunes National Park, abandoned mining cabins, and old mining towns. The hotel is a wonderful find--clean and stylish, soft beds, natural light, huge bathrooms, and a great lobby. We really appreciated the attention to detail like the patio heaters and the firepit in the evenings along with the Nespresso cappuccino in the mornings. We'll definitely be back!
