On the Grid : Melt Café

"Melt is Cape Town’s first café that specializes exclusively in the culinary brilliance that is the toasted sandwich. They pride themselves on fast, simple and delicious sandwiches with quality ingredients at affordable prices. Pair one of these with a coffee or an iced latte and you’ve got yourself the perfect lunch! Of course, you can substitute your white bread with either sourdough or 70% rye bread. They also have a Nutella and a Cheesecake toasties that are simply to die for!" - Yellow Door Collective

After experiencing the Melt goodness at the Street Food Festival, I knew I had to visit to experience it again. 100% worth it. The toasties are simply amazing, the cheese blend, the bread and the attention to underlying flavours. Started with The Popper and it was as good as before, creamy but with some bite thanks to the jalapeños. Then moved on to The Chicky, simply the best chicken mayo I’ve had. The homemade mayo fantastic and has some welcome zing to it.

I waited to be served as the was a lady at the window. Once she left i walked up & was busy placing my order and thr previous lady was speaking extremely loud so much so that i couldn't hear myself speak. I turned around & said to her to stop. In the meantime i noticed the lady working there has a unfriendly expression on her face. When i collected my order inasked if shes ok. She said to me that didnt like me saying to other lady to stop screaming as she was asking her for change. I said to her that she was wrong to behave like so. She started to have an attitude about it. I took my food and left.

Unassuming but amazing. You'd think that a small café selling toasted sandwiches would be humdrum. Quite the opposite... creative, tasty and unique selection of toasted sarnies coupled with the freshest, tastiest chips I've come across in ages. I highly recommend The Popper on White with Cheesy Jalapeño Fries, rinsed down with some Potion Coffee. But don't stop there. Try everything. Melt will make you want to.

A toasted sarmie is possibly the best comfort food you could get your hands on and then Melt Café takes that idea and puts some class on it. The Classic Toastie with their homemade mayo is divine. In fact, they're all good!

Went there yesterday around 6pm. Place was quiet, the 2 ladies working there looked sick and sullen. Ordered and paid for a toasted sandwich - the lady preparing the food proceeded to loudly cough, hack and snort all over my sandwich while she was preparing it without covering her mouth. I asked the lady at the till if they were ok, she said they both had bad flu. I left without waiting for my order to be finished, would have been irresponsible for me to even give it away. Felt beholden to share my experience for the benefit of others.
