Beautiful overlook. There is information about the history and legend of the pond. Excellent for quick photo op.

Google
Breathtaking view from the lookout which is super easy access. Especially sunset time is amazing. This view can be seen in the movie “Indiana Jones Raiders of the Lost Ark”

Gorgeous lookout! Go around sunset for perfect lighting!

It's amazing what those menehunes could do.

Very pretty area. Not a whole lot to do. I don't think too many out of towners know about it.

Google
I'm sorry, it's just a pond. The views are fantastic around the pond, but the pond itself is just a pond.

Yelp
Worth a quick stop if you are in the area for beautiful views! There is a small spot to pull off, but no restrooms or anything like that.

Yelp
My wife has been bugging me about remodeling our kitchen for a while now. As we drove back from Koloa Rum, I was thinking, "Man, those Menehune built the fishpond in one NIGHT. These guys ought to be able to knock out a kitchen remodel in no time flat!" Stopped to see if I could recruit these guys but couldn't find any. Some say they only work at night and disappear if seen. In Los Angeles, a lot of contractors disappear after they get a large deposit, even in broad daylight. Seriously, my wife enjoys stopping here to take in the scenery. It's pretty enough so why not? It was sad to see that there wasn't as much water as my last visit. When lack of rainfall begins affecting Kaua'i of all places, that is not good news for any of us.

Yelp
Menehune Fishpond is a nice place to stop, read about the history on the signs and take a few pictures. It's not a destination location but if you are in the area, it's worth driving up to or if you are staying nearby, then it's a short walk. Be careful if walking as the road is windy and it is not very wide.

Yelp
We came for the overlook and not the hike? Well it was a nice view. Looked at it for a few minutes and then left. The end.

Yelp
Menehune Fishpond was easy to find and get to. It's one of those quick scenic stops where you can pull over on the side of the road, jump out, and grab a few nice pictures. I wouldn't purposely go out of my way to visit but I think it's worth a stop if in the area with time to burn.

Yelp
The Alakoko or Menehune Fishpond is a short drive from Lihue proper on a mainly deserted road above Nawiliwili Harbor. Legend has it, that it was built in one night by the menuhene of ancient Hawaiian times. It's been under a restorative project so that it can be brought back to its former glory. We were able to see it twice, luckily. The 1st time was from the overlook and that's cool because we got to see it from above and how its proximity to the river/stream made it a vital area to keep the fish that supplied the royals. The 2nd time we were able to take a catamaran from Nawiliwili harbor manned by the Kauai Beach Boys and that was awesome. We got to take a tour up the Huleia River and went right next to the Menehune Fishpond. Seeing it up close really shows you the scale of the pond. It's overrun with a lot of invasive plants & weeds at the moment so you can see the rock wall at certain points. I love Hawaiian history and legend. This may seem like a boring stop for some but I liked it and made sure I saw it when I was on Kauai. It's so peaceful there... At the Fishpond overlook and especially upriver. I hope to see it again when the revitalization project is more in its advanced stages.

Yelp
One of the stops on our van tour. The story behind the pond, and the legend of the Menehunes is pretty cool, but I think seeing it from the roadway parking lot is about all you need. It was also the hottest place we stopped, due to being away from the coast and the breezes.

Yelp
It was raining and we really had nothing to do but drive around. We had just come from rum tasting at the Koloa Rum Co and were going to head to lunch. There's nothing really to see at the fishpond itself, it's not worth going out of your way or even stopping at. But if you feel like driving around, the mountains behind the fishpond are beautiful. Wouldn't come back here

Yelp
Stopped by the fishpond on our day in Lihue since it was close by. It was cool and exactly what we expected.

Yelp
Initially, this pool of water did not impress us. At first glance, it appeared to be a small lake sitting in a somewhat picturesque valley. But, after hearing about its history, this pond became pretty interesting to us. According to legend, long before the Polynesians settled the Hawaii islands, a mystical race of forest dwelling "little people" (called the Menehune) with superb engineering skills constructed this fishpond in a single night about 1,000 years ago. Whether you believe the local lore or not, this remnant of ancient Hawaiian aquaculture is worth a visit if you're in the Lihue area.

Yelp
Nice drive for a decent view but not a must do. Backed by a legend of having been built overnight by little people...we were intrigued, but the drive was actually more fun than the view.

Yelp
Ok this is a quick trip near the airport Lihue. Not much to look at but it is a nice side trip to check off the list.

Yelp
Nice drive on a pretty much deserted road. I would not recommend this road after nightfall. The pond itself is nice to look at. But you would not want to keep going back. It is just a lookout for pictures and viewing..no activities are allowed.
