We love Martha's Vineyard, and we have loved visiting at the Menemsha Inn, which we have been doing for almost ten years. Sad to say, after this summer, we won't be going back to the Menemsha Inn.
This is a nice enough place ... lots of New England charm, rustic, and a lovely setting. Truly lovely. It is pretty dated and lots works only intermittently (TV, Wifi, drains, etc.), but we did not mind because of the beach. The main draw for us has always been access to the amazing Lucy Vincent beach. However, this year when we arrived (at 1:30, which is significant, wait for it), I guess I assumed we could ask for a beach pass as we had in all previous years. Wrong! I was told that all the OBNOXIOUS guests had ruined it and the town would no longer give passes. Now we had to go to the town hall to get a pass, but it closed at 1:00. Then the managed yelled, "Had we booked by CALLING rather than ONLINE she would have told us this!" Huh? I then had to listen to a 10 minute rant about the beach being a privilege, not a right, and why did people think blah blah blah.
There were other unpleasant interactions with the manager during our stay, which I just cannot understand. If you do not like guests, why be a hotel manager? And when people come to your hotel to go to the beach, yelling at them when they ask about going to the beach seems guaranteed to make people unhappy. Anyway, in summary, for $500 a night, we will be going elsewhere from now on, where the hotel actually makes us feel welcome.
