Menger Hotel

"Why book? You can’t get much closer to the Alamo than this historic gem. Set the scene The hotel is a destination itself, with people popping in for a photo at the bar and tours passing by outside. The clientele is a mix of convention-goers and first-time visitors in jeans and sensible walking shoes. In the spring, keep an eye out for a bedazzled Fiesta queen (or two), as The Menger is a popular venue for the annual Mardi Gras–esque celebration. The backstory Since opening its doors in 1859—just 23 years after the Battle of the Alamo—the Menger Hotel has seen it all, hosted icons like Babe Ruth and Roy Rogers, and is now witnessing the redevelopment of Alamo Plaza next door. The rooms All 316 guest rooms have a traditional feel with floral bedspreads and matching curtains and pillows. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it complements the Victorian aesthetic. Menger Petite rooms are perfect for solo travelers. Food and drink Before he was president, Theodore Roosevelt recruited men for the First U.S. Volunteer Cavalry, better known as the Rough Riders, at The Menger Bar. Today, you can dig into comfort foods and sip classic cocktails while Roosevelt’s portrait looks on. And the bar isn’t the only spot with presidential ties. Bill Clinton was so obsessed with The Colonial Room Restaurant’s homemade mango ice cream, a menu staple for more than 160 years, he had it shipped in for both inaugurations.  The neighborhood/area The neighboring Alamo is, of course, a must-see, but also check out the recently revitalized Hemisfair Park and La Villita, an arts district with more than 25 shops and galleries. The service The hotel has an outdated concierge app (the events calendar is from 2019, for one) but makes up for it with good ole’ fashioned hospitality. The valet service, in particular, receives high marks for staff attentiveness and a reasonable rate—at $35 a night, it’s well below the downtown hotel average.  For families Kids love the oversized pool, heated November thru February, and nearby entertainment options abound. The mall next door has an aquarium, movie theater, and LEGOLAND Discovery Center, while Hemisfair Park’s Yanaguana Garden delights with creative climbing structures, public art, and a giant chess set.  Accessibility General accessibility info is buried on the website, but there are ADA accessible rooms with the choice between double queen or full beds.  Anything left to mention? The Menger is said to be one of the most haunted places in the city, but its spirited past is more intriguing than sinister. Learn more via Sisters Grimm Ghost Tours." - Tommie Ethington

This is my first time ever staying here and I absolutely love it. Even with the construction going on around the area, getting to the valet was pretty easy, and I love how close the hotel is to everything so we could walk anywhere pretty much. Walking into the hotel, the first thing I noticed was the scent. I know to some, maybe it's a little strong but I love the fragrance whatever it is. I need that for my room at home. As far as the rooms go, the beds are comfy and loved that our room had a little balcony overlooking the pool. The staff is very friendly and helpful and made check in a breeze. Overall this hotel is perfect spot to enjoy a weekend getaway. I will say the only con for me is the AC. It's just really minor thing because I get hot really easily so I need constant air flow lol. Other than that, everything was perfect.

Google
Very nice hotel in down town it felt like i was back in the 1800s. The rooms are nice but they can get a little warm but they said that is just because the hotel is so old and you are in Texas after all. The staff was very helpful and kind Brody and Quincy at the valet were very helpful I would reccomend the valet parking because everywhere else is much more expensive or far way from the hotel itself. I wasn't worried about my car getting damaged like at other hotels. The hotel is right next to the Alamo and the shopping mall and a lot of good places to eat so you don’t even need to drive anywhere to enjoy yourself. I will definitely stay again if I visit San Antonio.

Google
This hotel has such a beautiful lobby and garden and pool area! Such a gem. Unfortunately, they had an AC issue in the wing where I was scheduled to stay a day before my arrival. So I'm just here to say that they did such an amazing job finding me a room at an alternate (and beautiful) hotel in the area, paying for everything so I didn't have to pay any more than I had budgeted for at their hotel, and communicating well all the way. This is a hotel that takes care of its people, and I would gladly book there again. My travels went well without any hiccup even though they had a technical issue. Well done, Menger Hotel!

Google
Beautifully maintained historic hotel a true treat! On the Alamo Plaza, it's easy to everything downtown. Good Old Fashioned hotel rooms. The pool is very nice, and be sure to talk a walk through the tropical garden. It has a fridge and no microwave. Be sure to ask the front desk for the history and ghost stories handouts.

Google
If you’re looking to stay in a historic site where several famous figures from the past have stayed, this might be the place for you. The hotel offers a rich sense of history, with many displays and artifacts that are worth seeing. In fact, I would recommend visiting to explore the historical aspect—but not necessarily staying overnight. The rooms are a decent size, but the beds are full size (not queen) and not very comfortable. The bathroom is very small and not accessible. My husband uses a wheelchair, and it was extremely difficult for him to access the bathroom and shower. This made our stay quite challenging. We also requested a late checkout at noon but were denied, as checkout is firmly set at 11 a.m. On the plus side, the price is lower than nearby hotels, so if you’re just looking for a cheap place to crash, it might work for you.

Google
The Menger is an absolutely wonderful place to stay in San Antonio! My son requests we stay here every time we go now...we both love it. The hotel itself has been beautifully upkept while still maintaining the rich history within it's walls. There are so many interesting hotel artifacts to check out in the lobby. The rooms are spacious, charming...the pool is clean...and the customer service is the best, hands down. They also give my kiddo a really neat welcome bag every time we check in with some fun trinkets and some Menger "swag" to take home. The location is a stone's throw from the Alamo, the mall and a TON of shops, museums, restaurants, etc...and just a few minutes stroll and you're on the river walk. We've already booked our next summer stay at The Menger next month and I cannot wait!

Google
Nice hotel. Very charming. Room was a bit warm, but they warn you about that when you check in. The bed is the only reason I'm not leaving a 5 star review. Horrible bed. Very uncomfortable. My husband and I travel quite a bit and this bed is #2 on my list of terrible beds out of the very many placed we've stayed. I know, however, that is a risk you take when you travel.

Google
Our visit started off with the best possible experience -- Grace took care of our Valet services and simply went above and beyond with a few special needs that we had. Service with a smile and so extremely gracious... I couldn't have possibly asked for more. The Menger has always been "our hotel" where we always stay, and it is because of the quality of service that is always shown by the staff.

Yelp
My mom and I have come to the Menger Hotel every year for 24 years straight as a mother-daughter getaway. I've seen this hotel over the years through my own life changes and through many management changes. I would give the Menger 5 stars every single year, at any age. It is a classy, comfortable, friendly environment. We love hanging out by the sparkling clean (and very large) pool and ordering the poolside snacks and drinks. Every year I look forward to sitting in the beautiful courtyard area in one of the rocking chairs with a cup of coffee or glass of wine. The Menger Bar (original to the 1800s) is the perfect place to end the night. Over the years, the management has done things for us like a free room upgrade to one of their famous suites, surprised us with wine & fruit on arrival, comped our bar tab, and more. The Menger Hotel is great for any occasion - girls trip, couples getaway, family weekend. Not you mention, you'll be walking distance to the River Walk, mall, Alamo, Plaza, and more. If you're considering visiting the Menger, I cannot recommend enough!

Yelp
A tale of two visits; same room. Mom who was born in San Antonio wanted to revisit her roots over last Christmas. We had to stick to surface roads because geriatric going south past 1604. We chose the Menger because of the history surrounding the downtown landmarks. I'm not going to name the room but it was charming even with malfunctioning heat. Next visit cold for spring heat. We had to snuggle hard wink wink on the first visit. Has built in shopping including an estate jewelry business with beautiful ($$$$) pieces. Lobby is charming; courtyard is beautiful and well kept. Not much left to chance with ample staff. Cool old touches like mail slots near the elevators that drop all the way down to the first floor. Obviously cool bar scene because of the many famous people that were patrons. Second visit and this is hilarious I didn't realize NOLA famous Pat O'Briens was literally across the street. Visited that bar several times and until this visit didn't realize it's that close to the Menger until the last visit. We closed Menger Bar for this visit and headed to PO's only to close it down too. Couple of thoughts here and it's typical advice for any property. It's not 5 star (or 3 star) dining so explore the food scene. Number 2 Texas Monthly steakhouse on the River Walk. For breakfast we chose Voodoo Donuts instead of the breakfast buffet. Finally, valet service was excellent. Most folks don't think about it but they instantly suggested sheltered parking because I arrived in a soft top. Big weekend for downtown SA and the Luke Combs concert including our group. Our cars was parked for the evening and I felt safe from weather and foul play.

Yelp
If you are into history and vintage vibes this is your place to stay while visiting San Antonio! Beautiful spaces and lots of information related to the hotels history on the walls & through the hallways. Balcony rooms are large & can accommodate a roller bed, huge bonus! We loved our view of the pool & the sweet courtyards on property. Location is PERFECT if you plan to explore the Alamo & River Walk, 1min to Alamo & 5 to the walk. Lots and lots of shopping and restaurants are within minutes. We parked our car the entire time. The onsite bar was a happening spot and tacos next door $5 a plate. Valet only but worth it.

Yelp
Incredibly beautiful hotel. Very different than most modern chain hotels. Great location too. We want two things when we stay in a hotel: it's got to be clean and quiet. We checked into a small but adequate king bed room the other day. It was nice and clean. The hotel itself is really beautiful, staff were great too. Being a bit older than we look, we like a nap in the afternoon. We tried at about 3:00. Unfortunately someone was talking really loudly and we could hear doors slamming. After about 20 minutes we gave up and got up to wander around San Antonio. When we get out in the hall we found one of the cleaning staff walking around, talking at the top of her lungs. Her walkie-talkie type radio was the highest volume setting possible too. That was a surprise. There are plenty of rude guests who yell and scream in the hallways, disappointing that a staff member could be so inconsiderate. The other thing that we didn't like was how cold the room was and how we couldn't control the temperature (see one of the pics). The entrance light in the room didn't work and it was a pretty dark room in general. We did like the decent LG TV which allowed us to log onto our Netflix account and watch our own content. Glad we had an opportunity to see this cool place, but we won't stay there again. I'd have probably rated it 3.5 stars if I could.

Yelp
It was my idea for me and my husband to stay at the Menger Hotel while we were in San Antonio. I guess I wanted to lean into the whole Alamo thing, as this historical hotel is just around the corner. I enjoyed my stay. My partner had some issues with the room's shower and some of the hotel amenities like the gym not being comparable to a contemporary hotel... but I thought it was fine. What you give up with modernity, you gain with uniqueness and character. I liked the architecture, the history displays and suites known for where famous guest stayed, its ghostlore, and the Menger Bar. It's also close to the Riverwalk and the area around is very walkable.

Yelp
I understand this is a historic hotel, but the mattresses should be from at least the 2000's! The mattresses were awful, springs in our backs all night. The hotel itself is beautiful and we love history so we booked a balcony room for my birthday. The staff wasn't rude but everything was very transactional and impersonal. The "infamous" bar is TINY and was disappointing. Again, I understand this is a historic building but I expected there to be some modern upgrades. The pipes popped and woke us up throughout the night, the floors had holes in them when walking you could feel them under the carpet. The water temperature would go from hot to cold within seconds. It was just ok and I wouldn't stay here again. The best part was the balcony so we could people watch.

Yelp
Loved staying here. First the place is breathtaking. If you appreciate fine architecture this place will wow you. I came here for the experience. Stayed only night. I love how welcoming this place is to ghost enthusiasts. We happened to visit Halloween weekend and I loved how everyone was respectful while curious. I did not experience anything supernatural but I will say this place was very very peaceful. The location is fantastic as well. Central to all the shopping and restaurants. The mall is next door, The Alamo is also next door right on the other side. Only one thing I would say is the smell that is pumped throughout what seems the entire hotel even the exterior is the smell that is pumped throughout it is pretty strong and overwhelming but I guess it adds to the atmosphere. I also want to mention we had our kids with us it's ages 7&9 and they both loved it here and asked to return.

Yelp
Old Properties like this go through a lot of ups and downs. Some good, some challenging. I'm happy to report the Historic Menger Hotel in San Antonio is alive and well. We have all been in those old hotels that are barely hanging on. The smell of grandma's house, uncomfortable beds...etc. Not here. South Texas has many historic hotels worthy of your patronage including this lovely lodging. This is the whole enchilada including, restaurants, gift shops and right in walking distance of everything you want to see and do in downtown San Antonio. This is a no brainier... Go!

Kaitlyn J.

Yelp
Honestly a 100/10 experience! If you are looking for an amazing hotel that's affordable right in the heart of San Antonio, this is the hotel I'd recommend! My husband and I along with our 19 month old daughter had a last minute plan to head to San Antonio as Houston was struck with hurricane beryl. Our apartment was without power and the temp in our apartment was rising and it was miserable for all of us. The hotel staff was so friendly and I felt like they truly helped in every way imaginable. Upon our arrival, they even put a baby play pen in the room which doesn't sound like much but once you are rushing out of your apartment and arrive around 3 am, it was honestly so nice and comfortable for us. I would definitely book here again!

Yelp
I had the pleasure of staying at the Menger for a work conference. I had special circumstances that made this a great spot such as not pay for parking as we took advantage of rideshare. However, there is valet parking and note that there's road construction, so access to the valet is on Bonham (something to notify your rideshare driver as well). The hotel itself is a bit of a maze, took me a second to find the quickest path to my room. My room was clean. The bed may be one of the most comfortable beds I've been on, or maybe I've just been exhausted. The pillows are more comfortable than the ones I have on my bed. I love that my room had a fridge, not many hotels have them in rooms anymore, so I appreciated being able to keep my complimentary waters cold. As far as noise level, either my neighboring rooms were quiet or the only noise I truly heard was the flushing of their toilets each time they went to the bathroom. Due to being at the Menger for a conference, we were offered vouchers for the breakfast and lunch buffet. Staff at breakfast were hospitable and quick to clear tables. Day one breakfast was sausage, bacon, biscuits, potatoes, fresh fruit & more. Our day one lunch was fantastic! We had salmon, chicken, rice pilaf, mashed potatoes, baked potato soup, a dessert assortment, and a salad bar. Everything was hot and fresh! I'm honestly going to have to find the recipe for their salmon/chicken because it was that delicious. The conference rooms were spacious with access to a bathroom. The pool was closed until the end of the month. They have a nice sitting area with rocking chairs in the plaza, a perfect spot to sit when you need some sunshine after sitting in the chilly conference room for hours. The bar is a nice little spot with two seating areas. My favorite part about this hotel is its location near the mall which it's nearly attached to and there is quite a bit of attractions (including the Alamo) & restaurants nearby. It also has a few stores located inside, I haven't had a chance to check them out yet, but my first stop will be Sister's Grimm (where they offer ghost tours, which the hotel is one of their stops ‍)

Yelp
Immersed in history... The Dental Corps picked this place for the site of their 112th Anniversary celebration. It was not a bad choice at all. The hotel is a living museum that served as a marvelous hosts tour event, themed past, present and future. The staff at the valet and the check-in were friendly and courteous. The food at the event was very good. I ordered the ribeye steak , which came with asparagus and potatoes. The wine was good. The bar was generous. The crowd inside and external to the event was friendly. The Menger staff was super accommodating in support of this event. As far as accommodations, it was fine. Our room was small, but clean and sufficient. Our room had the usual hotel amenities (soaps, shampoos, towels, etc.). It had a nice LED TV and a fridge. The room had a walk-in closet. If all you need is a place to crash, the rooms at the Menger fit the bill. Things to do: The Menger Bar is worth a visit. The bartenders are capable and the drinks well prepped. They have an in-house taqueria - Mengerita Tacos that is also worth a stopover. The people hanging out around the pool looked like they were relaxing as well. The key difference between the Menger and the other downtown hotels is its history. If you can appreciate its design, artifacts, (the chance for ghosts), proximity to the Alamo and the Riverwalk... it's a great place to spend time in. I'm happy to have stayed there. Staying at the Menger is a once in a life time experience. Definitely worth a try.

Yelp
The Menger is an historic hotel, not a luxury hotel. If you keep that in mind, then you will enjoy your stay. Our room and a bathroom were on the small side, but comfortable enough for our four-night stay. Loved being able to look out our window and see the TR statue and nearby Alamo. For convenience, we had the breakfast buffet each day in the Colonial Room. Nothing to get excited about, but more than adequate. We did get a bit tired of the same menu each day. Our first night, we had drinks and a light supper in the Menger Bar. Truly a step back in time. The second night we met up with DH's high school classmates for drinks in the bar again. Then we walked next door to the taqueria. Good tacos! The hotel is full of history. Lots of interesting old furniture, photos, etc. Wish I had taken more time to explore. Good photo opps around every corner.

Yelp
The Menger is great full of pictures and furnishings from the past we stayed in the Roy Roger's room and it was great.

Yelp
Jenny and Tim are great. True customer service pillars of class and friendliness. The lobby smells divine.

Yelp
Amazing food and staff at the 2024 Mother's Day Brunch!!! This was mist definitely the best brunch ever!!!

Yelp
Loved our stay such a beautiful building! Did experience lights flickering and very faint conversations throughout the night. Very cool experience would love to go back and stay longer!

Lindsay M.

Yelp
The staff was kind and helpful, and the common areas of the hotel are beautiful, but I had troubles in my first room and other troubles in the room I moved to after requesting a change. In my first room, the sheets had a stain, a bathroom bulb was burned out and housed in a rusted fixture, the fridge was unplugged and warm, the tv didn't work, and the tub constantly dripped. There was also hair stuck to the bathroom walls and the bathroom floor looked inadequately clean. The walls are very thin and I could hear the entire conversation being had by the next room, and they were speaking in a normal volume. I was quickly moved to another room, which I appreciated. The second room still had hair, a tub that wasn't thoroughly cleaned, and a dripping tub that also didn't drain during my shower. I don't love standing in water while I shower. I was happy for the working lightbulbs and tv and a cold mini fridge, but the heater didn't work and only blew cold air, and the light fixture was still rusted. The night was in the 40s, so I was chilly. Overall, I expect some trade offs for an old property (small tub and bathroom, thin walls, etc.) and the bed was quite comfortable. I do think they could clean bathrooms better and keep bathroom fixtures from looking rusty. You can't beat the location, though!

Robert B.

Yelp
Even though this is the oldest hotel across half of America it sure didn't feel that way during our stay. This hotel has personally and charm, in the good sense. We were worried that we wouldn't have air conditioning because we stayed on the "historic" side, but our room had air conditioning and a fan. We stayed nice and fresh throughout the night. The hotel staff were super friendly. Sometimes, as a person of color, you get treated or looked at differently in some environments. I didn't get that sense at all at this hotel. An example of their excellent customer service was when my fiancée forgot her glasses in the room we stayed in. She remembered on the way to the airport. They found them and were kind enough to mail them to her house. Her glasses almost made it home before we did. Talk about service! In case you were wondering, we did not see any ghost during our stay.

Yelp
It was amazing! If you're in San Antonio definitely stay here! Very close to the Alamo, the riverwalk and very accessible. It's such a unique historical hotel. Highly recommended!!!

Yelp
We were happy to take the time to visit this historic hotel and bar. The people were friendly enough but just not super eager to chat about it. We stopped at the bar and I had a Rye Manhattan that was fabulous. We moved from bar to balcony for remainder of time and that was that! We did not stay overnight but just a short walk around and drink. Definitely recommend same
google avatar

Yelp
This is a comfortable hotel to stay in for vacation or work. I've stayed here many times for both and have always enjoyed my time. The pool area is fantastic. However, the pool needs some tile repair. There is spacious area around it, well enclosed by the hotel. The original side of the hotel rooms have unique "features" like steps up into the bathrooms. The breakfast in the hotel is delicious! The Menger is close to everything: The Alamo, The Riverwalk,  the convention center, dining, the mall. In the evening, you can take carriage rides that are found across the street. I've never seen Sally, but a friend saw something in a window, and the staff indicated was probably her; staff told him it was a window of a room that was always locked. Eerie!

Yelp
Very disappointed it's okay that a hotel is old it's another if they just don't maintain it the noise level was really loud it was supposed to be a nice peaceful couple of days the bed was uncomfortable it just wasn't worth the time spent
google avatar

Dennis S.

Yelp
This hotel doesn't get enough credit. It is like going back in time to a long lost era. The antiques, the Victorian lobby, the bar, just a gem. We love our stay. We spent an evening in the bar and saw a ghost (guy in a Rough Rider hat walked in, looked at the photo of Teddy Roosevelt walked out and disappeared) Saw this twice and we hadn't even been drinking. Bur the bar was great--good drinks and great service. Food in the hotel was up to 5 star standard. We never made it to the pool or the tropical garden. Something for the next stay. Valet service was great. A gem of San Antonio--forget the chains, do something original.
google avatar

Breanna G.

Yelp
Stayed here for a business trip. Overall, my stay was okay. The rooms were clean; Outdated, but clean nonetheless. I did not like the fact I could not control the AC/Heating unit in my own room. If you get cold or hot...good luck! The hotel is right in the middle of Downtown San Antonio giving you easy access to the Riverwalk. In regard to other accommodations and amenities, I don't think this hotel has much to offer (unless you like hearing about how haunted it is...they have tours available). Their parking rates range between $35-$40, there is no shuttle that takes you to and from the airport, and businesses (retail, restaurants, etc.) around the vicinity open up late and close up early.

Ken M.

Yelp
Good food at the buffet. Very good staff. Clean and well organized. I love the fresh fruit and salad bar.
google avatar

Amber R.

Yelp
Neat historical value in this hotel. However, showing it's age and maybe not the best upkeep. Staff I was in contact with were not the friendliest. My shower ran from super hot to super cold in regular cycles. Lots of construction near Alamo plaza made for difficult Uber pick ups/drop offs difficult.

Debbie S.

Yelp
My family was very disappointed in the Easter brunch. Many items were the same thing that I have purchased at Costco. The entrees were dry and uninspired. The bread was only one kind, right out of the package. The desserts were not home made and sub par. For the high price we paid, we were expecting freshly made food. We'll not return

Yelp
Horrible experience march 23, 2024. We were checked into two rooms that were checked out to other guests already. The first room's guest was asking why we were trying to open their door and we double triple checked the card number yes it was the correct room. We made the long walk with our baggage only for Staff to say that those guests should have checked out. The second room the key worked perfectly we opened enough to see guests luggage and shoes so we immediately closed the door, and yet again walked to the lobby with all our luggage to let them know someone is already in that room as well. That is dangerous, unprofessional, inexcusable! If we were bad people no telling what we could have done! They didn't even offer to comp the room after having to check out a third room to finally get it right. At this point we were afraid someone could go into our room as same as we could. We didn't want to flush the cost of the room, so we nervously stayed. My husband travels for a living and I have never had an experience this terrible.

Robert S.

Yelp
Reserved two queen beds but got two double beds. Room was outdated and somewhat worn. Late check-out option was part of the package but was denied. Requested valet service for luggage on departure but were told to get our own cart and do it ourselves due to "high number of people checking out". Complained and got commitment to send valet and granted permission to "hang out" in room until then, which we did, wasting time, for about an hour (late checkout would have avoided this problem). Won't be staying again. Finally got service after second visit to front desk. Had to wait nearly half an hour for vehicle at valet parking. They do not allow the lawful carry of firearms . They no longer display the Confederate flag as part of the six flags that flew over Texas. Spain, France, Mexico and the US all had slavery longer than the Confederacy and the US and Spain had more slaves than the Confederacy, yet their flags still fly.

Yelp
It's a beautiful place, for sure but if you want a good nights sleep, pray to god you don't have noisy neighbors. The walls are so thin, I can hear the guy snoring in the next room and when people go to the bathroom, it sounds like they're right in your room, with the door open. I had a noisy couple next to me that were yacking it up at the top of their lungs until about 11:00pm so I called the front desk and they responded graciously. But when they came up the couple had just left to go party somewhere for a while. The couple came back around 2:00am and started all over again shouting and laughing it up. Then finished their evening off around 3:30am with one of the loudest porn scenes ever. I'm glad my kids weren't here! Beware, this is an old hotel with thin walls!

Yelp
This hotel isn't what I expected it to be for the price. I thought the rooms would be much bigger and the employees in management not so friendly with customers.

Yelp
We are hosting a big company event here and the team has been super helpful. Love the venue and the people!! Best rates and great packages.

Janie M.

Yelp
We absolutely loved our stay! The valet staff was awesome. Aurora at the front desk - AMAZING! Her customer service skills are gold. I would love for her boss to know how well she treated us! Customer service is key! We loved our room. It is a very old hotel however is kept up very well! The hotel restaurant had a great breakfast! The only negative was when we went to the Menger Bar. The staff was less than friendly and the beef nachos were disgusting (the beef was literally not edible & the chips were stale). We loved the history of the bar and it too is beautiful. We were just disappointed in the staff & food at the bar. Outside of The Menger Bar we give the hotel 5 stars and we are looking forward to going back and staying at The Menger. We did not have any experiences with the resident ghosts this trip however are hoping to on our next trip. Thank you for a great weekend!

Yelp
The room was super comfortable. King size bed was really comfortable and the pillows were amazingly cozy. The AC worked perfectly. Our room on the fourth floor looked out onto the site of the Alamo. It's rare to find a hotel that has comfy rooms, a great location, and a great rate.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I were touring the Alamo during our stay at SATX and we passed by some questionable looking hotels nearby. We found out that two of the most haunted hotels are here at the Alamo (this one and the Emily Morgan across the street). Teddy Roosevelt used to recruit for the Rough Riders at the hotel bar here. The first time I passed by this hotel, I had no interest looking inside. After the riverboat tour, we happened to go to the Davy Crockett cabin store to check out what was inside. My boyfriend found a back exit door and holy smokes it goes into the Menger hotel. This place gives me the mega haunted hotel vibes. I just could not shake the bad juju that was emanating from every square inch of this place. I only felt better a few minutes after exiting the front entrance. I am 1000% sure this place is not only haunted, but has some unhappy occupants as well. Five stars for the haunting of the day!

Yelp
Live the traditional hotel brunch experience. The food was a little bit dry and un attended. But overall. The prime rib was prepared medium and live the dessert table. A good experience and the Menger is a wonderful hotel !! I plan on brunch again soon !!!!

Yelp
I loved this hotel the second I set eyes on it and it was such a treat to be able to stay here! I loved every minute. The energy in here is WILD- it felt like we were on a ship walking the hallways! I swear I had to get my sea legs and finally had 'em by the second night. It's simply gorgeous in here and I love that old haunted building scent so much. It has so much history in it on display that it's like a museum. So many fascinating photos and tales! It hits all the regular run-of-the-mill hotel things on the head; service, cleanliness, etc. Be sure to eat in their dining hall. We had brunch and it was excellent! Great buffet and eggs Benedict. And the mimosas... oh! Mango is my new favorite mimosa flavor. They use purée and it's straight up heavenly. We walked all over the place at night and got so many beautiful photos. Didn't get catch any orbs or anything but it was still a wonderfully fun time exploring. Stay here instead of one of the boring chains. San Antonio is full of charm... the Menger is its capital gem!

Yelp
Best true brunch in SA! Not one of these fake ala carte "brunches!" Potato au gratin was the best I've ever had, and prime rib was perfect! Need a people friendly hostess though!

Yelp
The lobby and bar area are awesome- absolutely love the history here. However the bed is horrible. It's tiny. I am barely 5 foot and my husband is average height- and it was too small for us to sleep comfortably. Make sure to ask for a room with a larger bed.

Yelp
My 11 year old son and I came to explore San Antonio. We ended up coming a day early so we stayed here for one night. The first room we got was gross - smelled of weird carpet. I thought, "ok, maybe we just need to get the air moving" so I tried to turn the air on and it was blowing out only hot air. I am not one to complain, but I knew we wouldn't be able to sleep so we hauled our stuff back downstairs to the lobby. The lady who helped me was very kind and found us another room, which was great! Nice and cool, didn't smell weird, clean - so this review is based off of our experience beginning from our move into that second room. The location was good - right across the street from the Alamo and walking distance to just about everything. The lobby area of the hotel has lots of old stuff to look at. We went to the restaurant for breakfast and it was delicious, service was good, and I felt like we were in a dollhouse. The tv remote would turn the channel a few times and then stop working. Probably just needed a new battery but I'm convinced it was a ghost messing with us.

Yelp
It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Got a cute shirt for my son right here too- I forgot to check in at that shop but it's attached

Yelp
The lobby is very historic and keep in great shape, check in was pleasant. Room was just as expected in looks but had no view (brick wall 20 feet away) Room was on 4th floor, AC was set at 65 when we arrived and temp. was 76, called front desk and was told a engineer would look into it. Wife and I went for a walk around the place to see the grounds and when we returned to our room we found the ceiling fan was on high and a portable box fan was on a chair set to High Speed. This is what an engineer does to fix the AC. Fans do not cool air they only cool people and recirculate the hot air. The noise of the fans was so great you could not carry on a conversation or listen to the TV. Temp. in room reduced to 75. Received no explanation as to why the AC was not doing its job. With the many hotels around the River Walk, we will stay at the Crockett next time.

Yelp
Our family group of 12 spent 4 nights (6/26 to 6/30) at the Menger Hotel in San Antonio, TX. This is a beautiful hotel. We loved the architecture and the history of the hotel, including the haunted stories about Sally White and Teddy Roosevelt that supposedly visit the hotel guests frequently. The restaurant in the hotel was awesome for their breakfast buffet. They had no problem accommodating our family group of 12 every morning for breakfast. This hotel is located right next to the Alamo, and is within walking distances to many attractions and restaurants. I would highly recommend this hotel to everyone that visits the San Antonio area!

Yelp
Stayed here in Christmas Day and was lovely place. It has a dining area, gift shop and spurs shop.

Yelp
BEWARE!! This hotel does not offer AIR CONDITIONING! If you want AC they move you to the hotel next door. Crazy!!!

Yelp
I'm a sucker for historical hotels and was so glad hubby picked this hotel when we visited San Antonio. The staff were super friendly and helpful. The room that we stayed at was in the old wing and dated but it was comfortable. Second floor is supposedly haunted but we did not see any ghosts lol. My cellphone turned off on its own though at 80% while I was taking pictures so maybe that was them :D It's a walking distance to may attractions downtown, the mall and the Riverwalk. The restaurant and bar inside is also a must visit!

Yelp
First time there, always wanted to visit! Decor inside is awesome, if you are a history buff! Lots of old pictures, exhibits of old RoughRiders items, Teddy Roosevelt memorabilia! Room was nice for as old as the building is, bathrooms were updated, but small. Big guys like me need to be a gymnast to use the toilet! LOL. The bar was nice, but needs better A/C, especially when people come and go out into the outside from the exterior door. Valet was decent, until they lost the keys of our friends we were traveling with. Seemed to be kids running the Valet, someone had their bags gone through and electronics missing out of their bags that weekend also. All and all, it was a very nice hotel, across the street from the Alamo, and close to everything!

Yelp
Old hotels that have a deep history are always worth a visit, but staying at them can be hit or miss. It's a great place to visit, grab some drinks, and have some mango ice cream, but staying here leaves a lot to be desired. Our room was clean, but the room/bed is not exactly comfortable. The temperature was difficult to control and keep at an ideal temperature, but I can see where this would be very unpleasant in mid-summer (we stayed here in March). Our tub also didn't drain well and it's never fun splashing around while trying to take a shower. We were also hopeful for some paranormal activity given it's haunted history, but the most we got was some flickering lights that was probably more indicative of old bulbs/wiring (anything else would have been a bonus!) The Menger is in a great location as it's right near the Alamo and the Riverwalk is right there as well, but given that it's not a comfortable place to stay, I would stay somewhere else and just visit the Menger when you're in the area.

Yelp
Great historic hotel. Has it limitations on HVAC but not an issue overall. However, after asking at front desk twice, asking the maid service directly once, hanging the please clean this room tag on the door, the room wasn't cleaned for the three nights we stayed. That needs to be addressed. Back to the Marriot Riverwalk for us. Menger, you need to address this issue.

Yelp
My wife and I stayed at the Menger Hotel for a night and it was a pleasant experience. The room, though small, was comfortable. We were checked in easily and were given coupons for a complimentary drink at the Menger Bar and also for a free appetizer at the Crockett Tavern. My only beef is the parking charge, $39 + tax and $5 tip for the valet was, in my opinion, quite excessive. I don't see why half of that amount wouldn't suffice.
