11 Essential Guatemalan Food to Eat in Guatemala - AFAR

"A bustling street food market where shucos—the local take on hot dogs—are a staple: a beef sausage in a toasted bun piled with guacamole, cabbage, chorizo, pico de gallo, and other custom toppings. Quick, messy, and satisfying, the name fittingly translates to “dirties.”" - Maliah West

Great place to find everything you need in the heart of the city. Easy to get around and easy to find the food or the goods you are looking for. Friendly and helpful vendors everywhere.

I love public markets in countries all over the world. I’ve been to many and this one was as good as they get. A labyrinth of shops that starts off seemingly simple and winds its way below to the next level where the food vendors, flower stalls, butchers and produce stations splay out their products in a explosion of the senses. The sounds, smells, flavors are all consuming and it’s overwhelming and wonderful. The third level down is the artisan crafts like glass, pottery, woodworking and other handmade products made from skill and tradition. You can’t go wrong here.

Great for buying souvenirs and eat really good at local prices. Make sure you bring cash

**Mercado Central** in **Antigua, Guatemala**, is a vibrant and bustling market that offers visitors a true taste of local culture. These items make great souvenirs and provide an authentic experience of Guatemala’s artisan traditions. 3. **Food Stalls**: - The market features numerous **food stalls** serving up traditional Guatemalan dishes such as **tamales**, **tacos**, and **enchiladas**. It’s a great place to sample the flavors of the country and experience the local food scene. 4. **Authentic Atmosphere**: - Unlike the more tourist-oriented spots in Antigua, **Mercado Central** offers a genuine, authentic experience. It’s a lively and often crowded place, where you can interact with local vendors, discover traditional crafts, and explore the real heartbeat of the city. 5. **Convenient Location**: - The market is centrally located, making it easy to access from many of Antigua’s main attractions. Overall, **Mercado Central** is a must-visit for those wanting to dive into the local culture, shop for unique handicrafts, and enjoy delicious traditional food in the heart of Antigua.

A great place to come to shop for souvenirs. Lots of colorful textiles, purses, shirts, tablecloths, napkins, and tons of knickknacks. Most places do take credit cards, but not all. Also, they are less likely to barter if you use a credit card. I didn’t see any bathrooms, so pee before you come. The second floor has lots of merchandise and the bottom floor is primarily food and food stands. Watch your valuables.

A must stop for shopping in Guatemala. Make it the end of your trip and you will find everything you wanted but don’t want to carry with you.

This is a great location to purchase souvenirs and other items from Guatemala. The prices are certainly better than at the airport! It’s also a great place to sample traditional prepared foods and fresh fruits and vegetables.

This has the essence of the chaotic beauty of any good market. A blur of local produce, fruits and spices stack shelves as you enter, with meats and seafood hanging in their glory. The food court next door is the heart of rustic Guatemalan cooking - I got some Hen Pepian stew, that bold nutty brown spice broth delicious when eaten with leaf-wrapped tamales. And of course fashions and arts, old and new, quintessential to Guate lie on the floor above. Must go, get lost and be amazed
