11 Essential Guatemalan Food to Eat in Guatemala - AFAR

"A bustling street food market where shucos—the local take on hot dogs—are a staple: a beef sausage in a toasted bun piled with guacamole, cabbage, chorizo, pico de gallo, and other custom toppings. Quick, messy, and satisfying, the name fittingly translates to “dirties.”" - Maliah West

The Mercado Central is one of the best places to experience authentic local life. It’s a mix of vibrant colors, delicious smells, and the hustle and bustle of daily Guatemalan culture. You can find everything here, fresh fruits, vegetables, spices, meats, flowers, clothing, handicrafts, and small food stalls serving traditional meals at great prices. What makes it special is the atmosphere: vendors calling out their products, families shopping for the week, and travelers exploring hidden corners of the market. The food stalls are a highlight, homemade dishes that taste like they came straight from someone’s kitchen, often much cheaper (and tastier) than restaurants. It can feel a little chaotic at first because of the crowds and narrow aisles, but that’s part of the experience. Bring cash, be ready to bargain a little, and keep an eye on your belongings as you would in any busy market. Overall, Mercado Central is a must-visit if you want to connect with local culture and flavors. It’s not just a place to shop, it’s an experience.

Great place to find everything you need in the heart of the city. Easy to get around and easy to find the food or the goods you are looking for. Friendly and helpful vendors everywhere.

I love public markets in countries all over the world. I’ve been to many and this one was as good as they get. A labyrinth of shops that starts off seemingly simple and winds its way below to the next level where the food vendors, flower stalls, butchers and produce stations splay out their products in a explosion of the senses. The sounds, smells, flavors are all consuming and it’s overwhelming and wonderful. The third level down is the artisan crafts like glass, pottery, woodworking and other handmade products made from skill and tradition. You can’t go wrong here.

This is Guatemala, the REAL Guatemala, no Cayala, no Oakland Mall. If you want to see the real Guatemala, go to Central Market in zone 1 and buy traditional candy from guate, some guate souvenirs, some paintings to bring with you and decorate your house if you dont live in guate, walk La Sexta all the way from 18th street to The Cathedral or Morazan Park.
