11 Essential Guatemalan Food to Eat in Guatemala - AFAR

"A bustling street food market where shucos—the local take on hot dogs—are a staple: a beef sausage in a toasted bun piled with guacamole, cabbage, chorizo, pico de gallo, and other custom toppings. Quick, messy, and satisfying, the name fittingly translates to “dirties.”" - Maliah West

Guatemala City’s Mercado Central (Central Market) is an absolute must-visit and one of the best ways to truly experience the heart and soul of Guatemala. This vibrant underground market is bursting with life, culture, and authenticity at every turn. The food alone is worth the visit. We had the pleasure of eating small tacos from the famous Doña Bello, and she was just as wonderful as her reputation. She took time to chat with us, making the experience feel personal and special. Her food was nothing short of divine—especially the crunchy pork taco, which was easily my favorite and something I’m still thinking about. Beyond the food, the market is packed with stalls selling beautiful, handmade goods. There are countless souvenir shops offering purses, leather goods, textiles, and artisan crafts. I picked up a handmade leather belt for just $18, and we also bought a Christmas tree ornament, a colorful table runner, and a pair of leather shoes—all unique, high-quality, and incredibly well priced. We also stopped by a coffee shop inside the market and enjoyed a cup of rich, locally grown Guatemalan coffee, which was the perfect way to pause and soak it all in. Mercado Central is more than just a place to shop or eat—it’s an immersive cultural experience. It’s a fantastic way to connect with the people, flavors, craftsmanship, and traditions of Guatemala. If you want an authentic, memorable experience in Guatemala City, this market should be at the very top of your list. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Really interesting as full of basically everything! I started on the upper level (which is actually -1 as its all underground) this floor was mostly souvenirs. The lower levels are worth going down to, foods and food stalls....and fancy locally handmade products for every occasion

Visited the Central Market as a part of a Guatemala City Tour with Viator. We had limited time in the market; however, the market was large and the surroundings were overcrowded and overwhelming. The market is immersed with authentic Guatemalan food, fresh produce, handcrafts especially beautiful and colorful leather goods and wool blankets, jewelries, and countless souvenirs. I picked up many souvenirs even a mini leather crossbody bag for my granddaughter. The vendor asked for her name and crafted it in the leather which was amazing.

This was a blast. If you want great Guatemalan gifts and items at great prices this is the place. I dropped a ton of money here but walked away with lots of bags and a huge smile. Great experience.

Nice market, unfortunately most merchants open at 9-10 even though the market officially opens at 6. I was there early and could barely find anything.
