The Best Places in the World to Travel if You Love Mushrooms

"Think mushrooms only grow in meadows and woods? Think again. Huitlacoche — otherwise known as corn smut, or, more elegantly put, Mexican truffle — is technically a plant disease that spreads into ears of corn but tastes undeniably decadent. The blue-black spores are considered a delicacy, and are best served on huarache or tostadas. Head to the Mercado de Coyoacán just around the corner from the Frida Kahlo museum, for a huitlacoche tostado — or two. And unlike traditional truffle dishes, a huitlacoche tostada will run you less than a dollar." - Travel + Leisure Editors

Stopped here on our 3-hour guided tour of Coyoacan which included tickets to the Frida Kahlo museum. Our guide Jeny arranged for us to have two types of tostadas here. They were both delicious. The place is spacious with lots of different food vendors. There's a restroom in the back.

So many choices of foods, all of them so far have been great- Pozole, Quesadillas, Tacos, Aguas, and crepes. Service does vary, as each stall is owned by seperate people. I have been had great service at most, but there does seem to be a couple of stalls where clearly the workers don't want to be there. Each stall has a "specialty," so make sure you try them all.

We always go to the stall in the back left corner. Their quesadillas and gorditas are the best. The lady makes them in front of you, and they have a selection of sauces to choose from.

A little more expensive than your typical market food but you get big portions. I recommend the spot on the left for chilaquiles verdes con bistek y Oaxacan Queso 😋

I forgot the name, but dont go the right side one( i think its 2nd one from the entrance ). Its very unhygienic( there was an insect in our gordita, its not chapulin!! ) and most of the foods were burnt. Its not even cheap compared to eating in a restaurant.

Authentic food market in the hood. Could get crowded sometimes but the food is always good. I love having the Huarache with pastor, which is huge and perfect for sharing.
