Google
A super clean and organized market with a nice food area. We enjoyed seeing the vendors and eating at a restaurant inside. Definitely one of the cleanest markets we have seen.

This is my favorite local market. It’s small but has everything you need. You can get cheese, salsa, meats, spices, gelatin, mole, snacks, flowers, teas and tortillas. It’s a great place to grab an orange juice or green juice, get breakfast at Fonda San Diego, or Florecita, or antojitos. There’s also a ATM outside.

This is my favourite market in Oaxaca, offering many authentic local food and fresh fruits. We bought tamale, tejate, champurrado, dominion bananas, guavas, mangoes, papaya, huitlacoche(corn smut), and we enjoyed them all. The market opens early around 7am. I would highly recommend this place for anyone visiting Oaxaca.

Got some cool juices and chocolate atole here. Atole isn't my favorite but others like it. Good for an in-depth, raw experience of Oaxacan life.

I liked this place. More of a local vibe and less tourists. The food court is great for breakfast. We just picked a table and ordered from whatever restaurant it was. We had the enchiladas verdes and chilaquiles verdes. Both tasty and set us on the way for our day.

I love this market! Comparing to 20 de Noviembre, this market is less tourist-target, more localized. And this market is more bright and clean. Super recommend Tamales geno! Their tamales is really good! But to-go only.

Very nice, I can buy most of the things I need there. At times it can be a bit crowded. The restaurant area has good food at good prices.

Went there after being told great things about the breakfasts there and I was not disappointed. Very authentic food with many options, quick service and low price! Don’t miss on it!

Yelp
We visited el Mercado de la Merced when we were walking around the city on our last full day in Oaxaca last week. El Mercado de la Merced was a little smaller than the other markets we visited that day, but that was kind of what I liked best about it. Because it's a little off the main stretch (it's still technically en el centro but it's also kind of on the border of el Barrio de Jalatlaco), it seemed like it might be more a local spot (a different local to tourist ratio that the other mercados). Still plenty to see, explore, and eat here! Worth checking out.

Yelp
Featured on numerous Youtube videos, this compact market is a market for locals first. There are fruit and vegetable vendors, raw meat vegetables, but also very authentic local food vendors. As featured in said videos, the Fonda Florecita is infamous, and my destination this visit for Mole Negros. The vendors are patient, and cheerful. Entry and exit doors are well monitored with temperature checks, and hand sanitization or washing. Stepping into shoe disinfection dips are also required.

Yelp
Mercado de La Merced is a very nice market located near the historic district! Fresh fruits and vegetables, fresh meats, and some very nice comedores ( food stalls). The Atolé chocolaté is a "must try". Foamy deliciousness!! You won't be disappointed! Very good prices. Friendly Merchants, though bring your cash as most prefer it. A good translator app will be helpful. Tip: The bathrooms are very clean and it is customary to tip the person keeping it that way.

Yelp
I loved eating breakfast at this market. It was smaller than other markets I've been to, but it had an incredible square that was surrounded by delicious restaurants. The feel of the market was quite cozy and we enjoyed pozole and tamales while a mariachi band played in the middle of the square. Definitely an incredible place to grab breakfast or lunch!

Yelp
Not as overwhelming in size as some other Oaxaca markets, you will see more locals shopping than tourists. Worth a meander through here. The focus is definitely on food, and splendid displays of dried peppers, beautiful fruit and vegetables, and of course meats of every variety. The chickens are all a surprising shade of yellow until you learn they are fed a diet of marigolds! Some indigenous women selling some of the produce. Among non-food items, colorful handbags made of cloth and lots of baskets.

Yelp
I just had the worst bus ride of my life from Puerto Escondido to Oaxaca. I did the Red eye trip, it was long and didn't sleep due to the roughness of the terrain I get out, the only place open is Mercado de la Merced, a Market with some food court. The food was ok, the place was quite big and felt like a little labyrinth. I didn't stick there for long but I was freaking happy the place was open so early.

Yelp
When I was a kid every time I visited Oaxaca it was a tradition to come for breakfast almost every Saturday. We would walk from my grandma's house, and every time I would order memelas or enfrijoladas. Our favourite restaurant was Fonda la Florecita. My mom also had her favourite spot to buy bread, orders juices and even a little business to buy flavoured gelatin, the best for me was the peach one. There's also a stand where we get organic hibiscus flower at a very accessible price. We even bought a chile plant once. To this day we try to come here once a month for breakfast!

Yelp
I'm a fan of el Mercado de La Merced because it's not overwhelming in size. It is not a tourist attraction, but a place where locals shop and eat. The fondas are unmissable. You can get a great breakfast or have lunch, at economical prices. Our best breakfast was at Fonda Teresita. The several juice stands offer great, fresh juices, alone or in combination. Try a jugo verde or a vampiro. On weekends, barbacoa is offered in the forecourt facing Avenida Morelos. I hope to try that on our next visit.
