9 Best Markets in Madrid | Condé Nast Traveler

"Sprawling a full city block with more than a football field's worth of bustling stalls, Mercado de Maravillas is the largest municipal market in Europe and the destination local chefs and adventurous cooks descend upon in droves to source hard-to-find ingredients. Its far-flung location in Tetuán, three miles north of the city center, keeps all but the most intrepid tourists at bay, guaranteeing the true-blue Madrileño experience that other markets lack. Don't leave without a sachet of hand-plucked saffron from La Mancha at Casa Serrano, for making heavenly fragrant paellas back at home." - Benjamin Kemper

It is one of the largest markets in Madrid, offering a wide variety of fresh ingredients and local products. The market covers an area of about 8,800 square meters and hosts more than 250 shops, including a Korean supermarket. Compared to other famous markets, it is frequented by many locals.

They have all sorts of stores here ranging from restaurants, butchers, seafood, fashion/clothing, fruits, veggies, and more. I also tried out some snacks at a couple restaurants and they were all prett delicious. If you come here I highly recommend trying out their empanadas. They have a handful of South American cuisine restaurants as well such as Venezuelan, Peruvian, Mexican, and more. Things are very clean and organized (especially the butchers area) so you can tell it’s just taken care of better and is well maintained. At the entrance to the left there’s also a map of all the places and areas so you can pre-plan where you’d like to go as well as to not get lost. Definitely recommend coming here even if you don’t plan on buying anything to just look at the markets, how their run, etc.

Was here on 2 Nov at 1.30pm and we must have been at the wrong part of the market as all we saw were only food produce more suitable for locals than tourist and there wasn’t food stalls. Would have loved to try the Peruvian restaurant mentioned by one other reviewer below.

Come for the cachapas and cheese! Both stalls at the back of the shop. We always buy our fruit and veg here too, you can bring your own bags meaning less waste.

A great indoor market with loads of internationally and local sourced foods. They have everything from meat, cheese's, fruit & veg plus much much more. There are shops that sell grains and teas from all over the world. Plus delicious olives and olives oils. So there so many shops it hard to know where to start. A two minute walk from Cuatro Camino's metro station but most of the market shuts down around 2pm local time so make sure you get there early as it can get quite busy around closing. They also sell honeys, Marmalades and biscuit. So pretty much anything you can think of. This is where the locals shop so you know it's got to be good. Spanish people are very serious about the quality of the food so you can rest assured that if the business sells food where the locals shops it got to be good.

This traditional market has also become a Mecca for those seeking authentic Latin American ingredients and Venezuelan and Peruvian food. Bustling atmosphere - amazing prices for fresh fruit, vegetables, fish, meat, cheese etc.

Though the stalls in this market were not as tidy and organized as those in Madrid's top-tier markets, you can always find some bargain and fresh produces in here (it did take some time and effort to find them out)!

Yelp
Really exciting market with high energy and people from all different cultures. There are many butchers, fish stands, and fruit and vegetable stands. There are also some great tapas bars and a lot of empanadas places. There's even a Korean grocery stand inside! It was difficult to decide where to eat, but in the end, I opted for a simple chicken empanada. The venders didn't speak any English, but I managed to order just fine with my knowledge of the word "pollo". The empanada was really big, and it was only €2. It was located in the back of the market where there is a group of a ton of empanada stands, each with a long line. They also have Venezuelan, Bolivian, Argentinian, and many other types of empanadas in the market! I definitely enjoy this market more than the overpriced San Miguel market!
