I’ve been to municipal markets all over Latin America and this has to be the worst one. Normally, I absolutely love the hustle and bustle, the local products, the families, but this one just had a totally different feeling to it that I just can’t describe. We really just came for lunch not needing to buy anything, we ended up eating at a place upstairs and it was only OK and actually pretty expensive. there was a more open place downstairs like a food court where it seemed like the food was more à la carte like empanadas or tamales, etc. There are signs all over town boasting about the renovation, but from what we could see this place was as rundown of a market that we’ve ever seen, can’t possibly imagine what it looked like before the alleged renovation. Some vendors have colorful bowls of spices out in the open and it’s picturesque , but I wouldn’t bring my phone out to take pictures in the market. It’s way too crowded. Keep your bags close, any zippers that you have fold them in towards your body. Most of the items in this market, except for the local foods and spices, was just imported junk.
