Mercat Central d'Alacant

Great market with so much variety, from the cured meats to the delicious great seafood to the colourful selection of fruits and veg and patisseries you're bound to find something here too enjoy. I found it so hard to choose i was so spoilt for choice. I loved all the tropical fruits on offer. But definitely make sure you check the fruit before you buy, i made the mistake of just going with the one the seller gave me and ended up with a rien mango. All in all though, a great market to visit and enjoy the many tasty delights. Would recommend. There's a very popular seafood stall that doesn't sell the seafood but cooks and serves it up for you, near the back of the market. Highly recommend. You might have to wait for a seat but it sure is worth it

I enjoyed my visit to the market. There were many different fruits (they were the most interesting), I liked that you can buy small tasting fruit sets and taste a little bit of everything. The price is about €3.50. Also a lot of meat, fish, etc., you can taste oysters, octopus, etc. on the spot.

Mercat Central d’Alacant is an absolute feast for the senses! 😍 I visited in January 2024 and was completely charmed by the colourful displays of vegetables and the incredibly fresh seafood; everything looked straight off the boat. Next time I’m definitely staying in a studio flat so I can cook & taste all the amazing produce I ended up admiring (and slightly drooling over!). 😍 The market also has a fascinating bit of history. Built in the early 20th century and opened in the 1920s, it’s been the heart of Alicante’s food scene for generations. It even survived a bombing during the Spanish Civil War in 1938, and still stands as a lively, resilient landmark today. Beautiful atmosphere, friendly vendors, and a must-visit for anyone who loves proper local food. Can’t wait to return! 💕

The Mercado Central de Alicante is a feast for the senses. Walking through it feels like stepping into a place where freshness and quality are the stars. With dozens of stalls, you can find everything from meats and fish to fruits, vegetables, and bakery treats. We were really impressed by the quality of the products. The meat and cheeses we picked were top-notch, clearly selected with care. The vegetables were fresh and vibrant, and the olives came in a wide variety of flavors, all perfectly seasoned — every bite showed attention to detail. The market has a lively yet organized vibe, and every stall feels authentic and welcoming. It’s easy to spend a couple of hours exploring, tasting, and discovering. Overall, we left more than satisfied: Mercado Central is a place that celebrates local produce and craftsmanship, and it’s a must-visit in Alicante for anyone who loves fresh, quality food. 🥩🍊🥖

Well worth the visit such a fantastic variety of fresh meat, fish, vegetables, spices, nuts , honey cakes. The market has a lower floor with an escalator going up & down. There is a large flower stall outside the back of the market. Make sure you also walk up to the old town such a beautiful area.

We highly recommend visiting Mercado central! We bought our breakfast there every morning – fresh pastries and delicious fruit. Very friendly people. 😊

The central market was clean, accessible to all modes of transportation. Although some shops were closed since we arrived at 1pm, the meat shops were a delight to see. Ended up buying a lot of take homes in one of the shops.

December 2025 The covered markets are always a good place to stop and have a look especially when booked an appartment or living here. Mainly fish or meat, they even have there own floor ;-) but the hidden gem is all in the back of the fish department. Have a seat, relax and enjoy the food.

Any central market is worth searching for. This was a bit of a walk, but enjoyed the sightseeing along the way. Once inside this great building, I discovered two floors and an outdoor courtyard full of every food and flower you could imagine. I took a little over an hour and wandered up and down the aisles. Taking in almost a floor of fresh seafood. Fresh cuts of meat- sheep heads, goat meat, and poultry. Lanes of fresh fruits and vegetables. Followed the scent of fresh baked bread and decided it was time foe a coffee break. Cappuccino and croissant in the market. Then outside to discover an array of beautiful flowers in so many colors and sizes. Klaus-Dieter you would have had a field day here picking out flowers for your wife. My regret here was not being able to buy any of the cheeses. There were so many delicious choices and too little time to eat them. Better than any grocery store, mercados are always a must stop and check out.

Any central market is worth visiting... I highly recommend a stop at this central market for clean bathrooms, air conditioning, and sensory tease of the local tastes, smell, and sights. You can hear people bartering prices for fish, carne, fruits and vegetables. Take your time. It can be busy, (my guess) especially on weekends. This place has two floors. Mainly carne on the top (ground) floor and then fish , vegetables and fruits on the lower floor. There was not many vendors for foods you can buy then eat. You'll need a kitchen to prepare the foods you buy.

The Mercado Central or Central Market was a slight walk from the Cruise terminal. It was easy to locate. The market is quite the experiment with the freshest of meats of the main floor and fish and seafood downstairs. There were aisles and aisles of meat markets selling mainly pork; a staple here, beef, chicken, turkey, goat and innards. In the back were a few pastries and bread. Downstairs was a menagerie of fish, eels, shrimps, lobsters, rays, Giant groupers, bonitas, flounders, periwinkle shells and trout. There was even a large sword fish head. Super interesting. Definitely worth the visit!

It's a slaughterhouse really. I was told it's the largest meat and fish market in Spain. Certainly every part of the animals was exposed, displayed and for sale from prime cuts to offal. The building looks like a train station from the outside. One floor is mostly devoted to land animals chiefly pig, followed by cow. Didn't see any goat, lamb or horse but I didn't look too hard. Another floor has fruit and veg one end and fish the other. Outside at the back was a flower market. It's clear that the pig is king and it is cheap apart from the specialist charcuterie which at the top end was well over €100 a kilo. They sell every part of this animal and the only thing unsold/uneaten appears to be the oink. I saw the biggest pigs trotters I've ever seen. Ireland used to have chippies that sold fish and chips and pig trotters and the saying was that there was eating and reading in them as like the fish & chips they were served wrapped in newspaper. Pig trotters from the chippy were tasty but very greasy and on a cold night a film of pig fat congealed around your mouth and once you wiped with the newspaper you instead had a gob of cheap printing ink. Oh the romance of the 1960's. Many trotters still had hairs on so you could pick your teeth too. Back from meandering; given the local area has 1500 restaurants, hundreds of bars and cafes and a third of a million population I'd say that the traders are always busy. We got there around noon so at the latter end of trading. There's a few eateries within. One place we spotted offered 4 fresh oysters with a glass of champagne for €22 or if you took a Prosecco style fizz €20. We weren't long after brekky so we couldn't avail. Maybe sometime. Definitely worth a visit, but I'd understand various vegans and vegetarians may want to be elsewhere.

The Mercado Central is a market place in an older building, quite central. It is located in the Avenida Alfonso X el Sabio, reachable with many busses and the local tram (tranvia), station "Mercado". The Mercado is devided into two levels. They sell vegatables, fruits, meet, fish, eggs, nuts, bread, sweets and many more articles. The food seems to be very fresh. Vegetarians might have a problem seeing complete fishes, octopuses, anmial heads, etc. The Mercado is not especially cheep, but neither expensive. Extremely convenient is the division into different topics. So you e.g. find all stands mainly selling eggs next to each other what makes it very easy to compare prices and - as far as one is experienced - quality. But even if you don`t want to buy something, it definitely is worth going in and having a look around. But watch out the opening hours. Often it closes at 2 p.m., as in the afternoon it is very hot (at least in summer), so most people stay at home and shops close. The best time to see a lively market is early in the morning. However, after about noon many stands with fresh food (like those sellling fish) only have a limited number of products left and start cleaning up. You really SHOULD give the Mercado a visit!
