An impressive and unique structure and monument stood outside of the cathedral. There are lots of interesting sites in this area and it is worth spending time seeing them.

Literally just a landmark that looks cool. Met here for the Mercat vault tour which we loved though! I think the history of this landmark is interesting though, you'll have to wait till you do a tour to find out..

A monument in Parliament Square, located just to the east of St. Giles Cathedral. The current version dates to 1885 but the location has been used for centuries - going back at least to 1365. The Cross was the location for public announcements, proclamations, and executions. The monument is located Old Town, facing the Edinburgh City Chambers. Free of charge to see it.

This is the spot where you start your history tour with Mercat Tours. Mercat means market. Sounds very Latin 🙂

The Market cross. A place of announcement in olden times. When Queen Elizabeth died, they made an announcement from here. Located near St Giles Cathedral.

Thought I already did this, but I wanted to make sure since this tour was amazing! Marie was an amazing storyteller! We loved this tour and wished it was longer. The stories were great. The spots we visited we amazing! Especially the Blair Street Underground Vaults. My only suggestion is to dim a couple of the bright lights in the Underground vaults.

Book a walking tour and take in all of these statues and memorials while kearning the history of the people behind them. You won't regret it and it's the best way to see everything
