The Best Dance Halls for Two-Stepping Near Austin

"The Mercer Dancehall operated for years in downtown Dripping Springs, but in 2018 it moved to an expansive new location in Driftwood, 20 miles south of Austin. When you’re not taking a spin around the wooden floor, in front of a stage that looks vaguely like the one in the cafeteria of your elementary school, you can kick back on the big wraparound porch outside. Bands play every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday."

Google
If you're looking for a typical country western ,no frills dance hall, this is it. You won't find a rowdy crowd or young hip hop booty dancing. A lot of old folks , but also a few younger couples. No food there. Limited mixed drinks but the service is good. Drinks are bout $4 for a beer and $10 for a cocktail. Live music is good most of the time. Dance floor can get crowded and sometimes it tough to find a table to sit at, but a fun time. I've been to fancy dance halls , but out here in a small town, this one ain't bad.

Google
What a delightful diversion in Dripping Springs! This is a place from another era where people gather to two-step the night away! The music was exactly what one needs to dance the night away in your finest cowboy boots, and the dancers on the ample dance floor know their stuff! They were also very accommodating to those of us who were trying the steps out for the first time. The $10 cover charge seems a little steep, especially since drink prices are on the higher side of average. However, if you are looking for a place to cut a country rug in Dripping Springs, you won't find a finer place.

Google
Super fun place to dance, with or without a dance partner. Food is limited to chips and popcorn. Full bar service. I only drink water, lol I am my 9wn designated driver! Old fashioned dancehall so the floor is amazing! There are tables and chairs and a few barstools. It does get crowded with great bands on Saturday so come back on Sunday and have a great time with fewer people on the dance floor.

Google
I highly recommend checking the event calendar beforehand. Being a bar in the Texas countryside, we thought we'd get a chance to two-step but there was a band playing pop/rock oldies. The band was not bad at all, but definitely not what we were looking for and the cover charge was rather steep.

Google
Just went here for the first time last night and had a great time at this classic dancehall! A couple of the bartenders could have been more friendly.

Charles Ebbinghaus

Google
The lady letting us in was rude. The ACs did not handle keeping it cool. The bar is up front where you walk into the place which was very inconvenient and awkward. Thank God the band was awesome. The drinks were reasonably priced and the bartenders were awesome

Google
Super fun for a Saturday night out dancing. Love it when there's a live band but they also have dance lessons on Friday nights. It's a great spot to meet up with some friends, have a beer and do a little two-stepping.

John Deboer

Google
Went with a big group on Friday for the free two-step dance lessons. Had a great time! Highly recommend. Low drink prices too!

Yelp
Perfect place to cut a rug! We danced for an hour on their beautiful wooden floor. Bathrooms were clean. Margarita was enjoyable too.

Yelp
Despite being all-Texas through and through, I missed out on the whole shebang of a real hill country dance hall. My loss. We stumbled upon this slice of America where pride is as real as it gets - no pretense, just genuine vibes. Picture city slicker and country folk, red and blue shades, where character and dance moves are gold. Nation undivided.

Yelp
Can't get much better than Mercer - Great live music, wonderful staff, and a beautiful outdoor patio for the occasional break. I follow their instagram to see announcements

Yelp
Very nice dance hall. Outstanding band Bob Appel, on the night we attended. New dance floor was great to scoot a boot on. Very nice, overall somewhat older, folks were very polite and not rowdy like we have experienced at other venues...as they seemed to be there for a good time. Bartenders were polite and attentive. We had a great time.

John H.

Yelp
Our first time at Mercer and it was excellent! They had a great staff and the people we met were down to earth. The band (Jesse Daniel) was excellent and we danced all night. If you like old school country vibe and dance hall, this is the place for you. We will definitely be back!

Yelp
Great place. Good music and fun atmosphere. My wife and I went after dinner to check out the band. Enjoyed the whole experience. It would be a fabulous venue for wedding or other private party.

Yelp
Ok...the guy doing 'crowd control' (there was no crowd) is the owner....and he has no problem reminding you of that. We showed up with a group of 20 to spend money and have a great time. The 'owner' couldn't get past his ego. Rude to our whole group..and especially the ladies. Also, I don't want to go here, but offered to fight our 'black' friend because he wouldn't listen to him (FYI..he's Jamaican). He then decided to give us his 'My way or the Highway' speech. So we demanded our money back ($15 per person x 20 = $300 he lost out on) His daughter came out from behind the bar with the same chip on her shoulder. NEVER AGAIN! This guy needs a lesson in customer service and friendliness....THE HARD WAY! That's my 'Speech' for you pal! Highly NOT recommend this place!

Yelp
Great gem in Dripping Springs! They bring in some amazing Texas country acts like Weldon Henson, The Warhorses, Dale Watson and Cameran Nelson. Dance lessons are offered on Saturdays and they're included in the door price paid. A lot of great dancers frequent this place anf its fun to watch and get out there yourself. Cash only at the door but they take cards at the bar. Always good to arrive before 9 when bigger names come so you can get a table.

Yelp
This is a great place! So much fun, and a wonderful family owned business! You've got to check it out!!

Yelp
I have been here several times trying to have a good time and get some dancing in but they built this new place way too small for the bands they have here. I suspect the owner has some good connections for talent but unless you want to just go watch the bands and not dance, you may have a good time. Be prepared to stand the whole time though. There is not enough seating for the amount of people they let in (a major flaw in planning this new facility) so it gets very crowded again with no place to sit. I am pretty sure this time was my last time going to this venue. Good luck if you go and I hope you have fun. I haven't!

Yelp
Went here for the first time on a Thursday night, February 2nd to hear and dance to Bob Appel. His performance for listening and dancing is fantastic. It was the 5 year anniversary of the opening of the Mercer Street Dance Hall and even though it was busy, there was plenty of room on the wonderful wooden dance floor. Drinks were a bit pricy but there wasn't a cover charge this night, so that is expected. We hope to go back again soon even though it is a 1 1/2 hour drive from our house. We spent the night in Dripping Springs to keep it easy and safe.

Yelp
Very nice dance hall along with cabins on the property which me and my wife stayed a weekend. The owners are very accommodating and the nicest people, great place to dance and stay.

Yelp
My name is Terry. By far the BEST dancehall in the Austin, Dripping Springs area! Always fun with great management and bartenders. Bringing great classic country artists that normally never play in Austin area. For instance, in Jan. Max Stalling, Bobby Flores, Kenny Orts to name a few...good sound system and great dance floor. Always a friendly and FUN atmosphere.

Amy R.

Yelp
First time to the new Mercer Street and was not enjoyable at all. I thought the crowds might have been because of the band, Asleep at the Wheel, but according to another lady I talked to, the crowd was pretty standard. The new venue is much smaller than the old and the set up is not conducive to dancing or to watching the bands because people stand in front of the tables. To add insult to injury, the folks who had tables paid an additional fee, only to have people crammed in around them, blocking their view. There is a small bar right at the front of the building, which creates a logjam at the entrance and one door to the restrooms which is right in the bar area as well, so that whole area is a nightmare with any kind of crowds. There is a lot of space there, they have a great opportunity if only this set up and the size were corrected for the types of acts they bring I'm. There is plenty of parking, so that's on the plus side.

Yelp
!!NOTE!! The Old Mercer Street Dancehall, has moved about 8 miles down the road to: 23490 Ranch Rd 12, Driftwood, TX 78619 The new place, looks just like the "old" joint and is run by the same folks... which could be good or bad. The new joint has potential, it's on a nice tree covered plot and has a big deck to sit outside. I saw a few past reviews that said the new dance floor was too "sticky" to dance a good two step, but trust me, they fixed that cause the floor is like a sheet of ice now! You could skate on the thing it's so slick! The sound is good but my biggest gripe is the lighting! They don't change it to reflect the type of band that's playing.... it's always eye searing bright, with tons of neon, giving it all the warmth and coziness of a gas station convenient store. The mood is totally spoiled if you happen to be seeing a more mellow band. Everyone at the show I was at said the same thing and a friend even asked the manager if they would turn down the house lights and he said "that's not gonna happen".... so they seem pretty committed to the hospital lighting, which is a pity.

Yelp
This place is awesome. Not only do they allow families of all ages to come out and dance, but the venue itself is super cute. I came on the night of a band (the derailers) which meant I had to pay a cover, but it was only $10 for entry fee. The band was awesome. Most beers were $4 and I got a Bloody Mary for $7 but it was a double. I love that they used Zing Zing in the mix. The crowd was a good mix, and the dance floor was spacious. Everyone was friendly and having a good time! Even better-- I got asked to dance plenty.. So that means people go to have a killer time. I would totally go back.. Maybe even take my kiddo next time. Sure beats paying a sitter! :) Mercer Street- you get super thumbs up from this gal on a good time out.

Yelp
First of all this place has reopened and it is a joke! I am not sure what they were thinking when they built this place. One very slow bar, which ran out of nearly everything. The bar at the front door which causes a back up when people are trying to get in. What is the point of the wall with glass doors, which are in the way and take up way to much room. Very small venue! I heard several first timers saying they would never return, including our group. No one was watching people leave with alcohol, but then again it's hard to leave with alcohol when there is none. VERY DISAPPOINTING!!!!

Yelp
My new favorite spot in town! Love the owners, who are so incredibly welcoming, love the band lineup, great wood dancefloor. Patio deck is fun to enjoy those Texas nights.

Wayne P.

Yelp
Attended the New Years Eve party there and it was a blast. Dance floor is good though crowded and the people there are relaxed and having fun. Drinks are great plenty of variety. Will go back.

Yelp
Mercer Street is nice little hole in the wall dance hall in Dripping Springs, TX. My wife and I stayed for a total of 1 1/2 hours and caught the last 30 minutes of the dance lesson - no we didn't take any lessons. My negative write up is directed to the The Mitch Jacobs Band. We stayed for @ 10 songs - none of which were from the 21st century. Roger Miller, Johnny Cash - what a total wasted trip.

Jim G.

Yelp
I love this place! I go every 2ed Sunday afternoon. The people who work there are nice, the cover is reasonable, it's easy to find somebody to dance with. The only gripes I have are the parking lot gets really muddy when it rains and it's a long way from my house.
google avatar

Shane M.

Yelp
This place is gonna be a lot of fun over the years. If we could just talk them into opening for the afternoon crowd on Saturday and Sunday, we'd be back more often. I look forward to spending some time on that dance floor this year. This place is nothing flashy, and exactly what I like in a small town dance hall. Open dance floor, country music and COLD beer.
google avatar

Henriette B.

Yelp
Yup as good as it gets! Why? How can you not love a Dance Hall with great music and a full bar. They even provide dancing lessons on Saturday night. The owners, Gay and Nick are very friendly and locally oriented. They helped a local group out several times by letting us host an event at their place. We have enjoyed several awesome musicians here like Jimmie Vaughan. Looking forward to more first class entertainment at Mercer Street.
google avatar

Rick S.

Yelp
This is a terrific dance hall with live music, a great dance floor, an overly friendly staff and terrific regulars. Saturday night dance lessons are easy to follow, challenging and always fun. This is my favorite place to dance and you have to try Second Sunday's.

Yelp
Howdy, wanted to stay local last night. It's hard to do a location with a group of four when the cover is $12 a person. Really!? 12$ per person. Didn't make much sense for us although we were going to drink but this is not South Austin.

Brenda H.

Yelp
Most fun dance place ever!!!!!!!!! My husband and I have danced here several times!!!! We've had the most fun. We will be back every weekend. The bands have been outstanding!!!!! Also, the martinis are wonderful!!!!!!

Don J.

Yelp
This is one of the newest dancehalls in Texas. It is located about 4 miles out of Dripping Springs. It's very nice and has great potential. I'm sure they will be doing something about the parking (I hope). It is very muddy when it rains. The people are friendly and the staff is nice. And of course the beer is cold. My chief complaint is the dance floor. My wife and I have danced most of the dancehalls in Texas and this has got to be the worst floor we have ever danced on. It is so sticky that when you leave your legs are just worrn out from trying to slide your feet. Hope they have plans for this. You would figure they would have this done before opening the doors.

Martha R.

Yelp
We love the music on Sunday and the dancehall. Only negative thing is the dancefloor. We visited when the new dancehall opened and was told it was being redone. Hopefully it is still being worked on because we were there today and the floor was awful. Very sticky and and hard to dance on. We asked one of the employees if they would put some dance wax on the floor and she did. It was not enough to help. Sure hope they improve he floor since we really enjoy the hall.

Yelp
This place is a blast ! They are very family friendly and the music is pure Texas. It has a nice large, wooden floor and the owner is a super guy. Decent beer pricing and a great place for a party ! Unfortunately, it's on the other side of the planet from me, but I still go a few times a year.

Bart G.

Yelp
We had our son's rehearsal dinner catered here. We had 100+ people, and there was plenty of room for all! Nicholas and Gay were awesome to work with. They went above and to make the event a great success!!

James M.

Yelp
Jimmy Vaughn Saturday night & Asleep at the Wheel the next. Very cool! The place was sold out but I never felt crowded. The show started at 8:45 and went to 11:45. There wasn't a big wait to get a drink. The place has an intimate hunting lodge sort of woody feel to it. Down front it seemed like I was onstage. The food truck has a tasty burger and it wasn't too pricey. Very nice.

Yelp
Mercer Street has gone from struggling upstart to the big time in a very short time. The facilities are great, including the bathrooms. The quality of the entertainment is getting to be first class and it will be a destination place for folks who want a real Texas dance hall experience without the tourists, hipsters and cartoon drugstore cowboys that fill up the Broken Spoke. The cowboy types you see here actually ride horses. Owner Nick runs a tight ship and that has helped his success. Prices are quite reasonable but, be advised, take cash.

Yelp
Not impressed, brought a group of people with me and prepaid for my wife at the door, which 5 min later couldn't make it. Asked the guy at the door for a refund and he said he had heard it all before and treated me like I was trying to scam him. Not a big deal but that is not how I do business. Good ol boy atmosphere without the morals? I guess they needed the extra $15 to pay for atmosphere which is very lacking.

Yelp
We stopped in opening night to see what it would be like. We arrived right around 7:10 and it wasn't too busy yet. It was $7 per person to get in at the front door. The lady said it was cash only as the credit card lines weren't up and running yet. We walked in and took in the building. It was a pretty good sized building made from mostly wood and metal. No ceiling fans or HVAC. Just the good old basics. There is a bar area where you can purchase wine for $5 per glass, beers in a can for $3.25 or $3.75 depending on the beer, or soda for $2. You can also get a bucket with glasses to mix your own. We saw people walking in with their own whiskey and wine throughout the evening. They also sell snacks (chips) for $2. Around 7:20 they started offering dance lessons out on the dance floor and numerous people went out. Lots of cowboy hats and boots dancing around. It was neat to watch By 8 pm it was getting pretty busy and the band was getting set up. Once they got started the band was really good. Great sound and very entertaining. We left a bit early, around 10 pm. There must have been 200 people inside the building, with at least another 100 waiting outside the door to get in, as other people left. I do have a few complaints: 1. At least 1/2 the tables and available seating were reserved. It didn't leave a lot of choices for places to sit. 2. When I was at the bar, someone from management tried to take my stool for the sound man. My wife said I was at the bar getting a drink, but the lady didn't care. She was screaming at my wife telling her they needed my seat. My wife said no again. She was very offended and we almost left at that point. I don't think taking seats from paying customers while they are at the bar spending more money is a good business idea. And don't scream at the customers.

Herr M.

Yelp
A huge thumbs up for this place having lessons that actually teach 2-step and not like a couple of other Austin places that teach 1-step. While I did skip on the lessons it seems like it'll be worthy as I'll a new move. One great thing was the music was too loud, you don't have yell at the person next to you just to carry a conversation. Dance is plywood it seems but it's smooth and no complaints. $4 beers, big ouch. $8 cover, ouch but live band. One real place that they could improve on is when the band takes a break, play some music, preferable current country music. Perhaps if the band is playing a lot of 2-step, have some polka.

Yelp
THEY HAVE AIR CONDITIONING!! Also many great beers on tap!! I went here for a Dripping Springs Chamber event and was very pleased with the staff and the environment. I will be back!!

Jen M.

Yelp
I loved the dance hall, cool building, great band, BUT.... WAY TOO MANY KIDS!!! I understand people like a place to take the kiddies, however when I go out on a Saturday night at 9pm I prefer to be around adults. Kids were running around everywhere... Suggestion: Friday night family night, Saturday night 21 and over. Otherwise it's 5 stars.

Jen R.

Yelp
Staff were very rude and the show times on the website weren't accurate to when the show was really starting. A lot of smokers. Not a lot of space for the number of people there.

J M.

Yelp
My friends and I saw JD Souther here tonight. It was our first time at this venue. The concert and the venue were great, except IT WAS FREEZING COLD WITH A STRONG FAN BLOWING. Everyone around us was complaining about the cold, even one woman who claimed she was hot all the time said she was concerned she was falling ill because she couldn't remember the last time she felt so cold indoors. When I went to the bathroom, all the other women were complaining about how cold it was, and those who had come to see a show last night said they nearly didn't come back tonight due to the temperature. Several other people and I all asked the staff to at least turn off the fan to the AC. They said they were not able to do so, despite claiming they were freezing themselves. Everyone in my group was so miserably cold that we left early, much to our disappointment because the music was great. I am shocked that the staff/owners of this establishment would be so arrogant and inconsiderate of their customers that they would ignore numerous requests from multiple people to raise the temperature. If people are dancing, I can understand a cold AC, but there was no dancing tonight and the cold was over the top. I wouldn't recommend this venue and will advise my friends against patronizing it because the owners obviously do not care that their customers have a pleasant experience.

Yelp
This place is great..........for a family to go. If you were looking for good dancers, singles that would ask you to dance, and air conditioning, this is not the place for you. There were a lot of couples and family's with kids as young as 5 dancing on dance floor. I was there early for lesson which was truly for beginners. There was no changing partners in lesson which tells me they are all couples. I stayed until 9 and didn't see the hundreds of people so it may be a Saturday versus Friday thing. Bottled water was only a dollar so that was best thing of all. Will definatly go back with my kids and grandparents but not as a person looking to do dance good two stepping, west coast swinging, east coast swinging or waltzing. I guess if I would have stayed later maybe there would have been more dancers come in but the kids and teens made me not want to stay unless I had mine with me. Cute idea and wish I had that as a kid to go to.
