Mercure Kangaroo Island Lodge

So glad we chose to stay here. It was just wonderful! The lodge and rooms are modern and well maintained. The food was very good and reasonably priced ( the curry was great). Breakfast was lovely but huge! The staff were all very friendly and accommodating. The setting and views are lovely too. Can’t recommend enough.

A highlight of our stay was the thoughtful hospitality — complimentary snacks and wine were prepared for all guests, which was a pleasant and generous touch. The restaurant requires advance booking during the holiday season, which is understandable. The dishes were well prepared, flavoursome, and certainly worthy of a four-star hotel standard. The location is excellent. We enjoyed a beautiful sunrise directly from our balcony, and the beach just across the road made it easy for a refreshing morning run. The only minor issue was that our room was not serviced despite a request made at reception. However, this did not significantly affect our overall experience.

Pool view rooms are a good size with a lovely lounge in the bay window, they also have a view of the ocean. Breakfast is so filling that we only felt the need to have the next meal at dinnertime. Information on the bushwalking trails is available at the reception. We extended the stay by a night and stayed for a total of six nights. We spent the mornings hiking and the afternoons around the pool. Great location to make day trips around the island. The beach across the lodge is a bit swampy and the nice beaches are about 15 minutes drive.

The Mercure Kangaroo Island Lodge is in a prime location directly in front of the American River, which is excellent for bird watching. We even saw koalas in the trees just a few meters from the hotel entrance! The rooms are very spacious and clean. We found the restaurant to be high value for money with great quality dishes; the à la carte breakfast is specifically very good. Most importantly, the staff are incredibly honest. We left a bag with our wallets and passports at breakfast, and they kept it safe and emailed us immediately, even before we noticed we left it. A very trustworthy and scenic place to stay!

Not your normal location for a major chain but a pleasant oasis.|The rooms have a beach chalet vibe with white painted wood panelling. They are rather nice with a chaise langue in the bay window but they have no chairs or table and the mini fridge is tiny. Our ‘poolside’ room came with a decent view of the sea.|Breakfast is very parsimonious. $29 gets you a coffee from a machine, fruit juice, and a single waitress-served course. The granola bowl looked best, other courses always included dry sourdough slices.|The adjoining plot is being built upon, so the car park was like a mud bath, especially in the rain.|Could be really nice with a few tweaks.

I would not stay here again but the hotel is ok.||1. Terrible administration! We had booked online, had had email correspondence and confirmed 1 week before coming. We got to the hotel at 7.45pm and reception closed at 7.30pm (luckily they had put our room keys in a safety deposit box… just in case we turned up) but they had cancelled our reservation as we were not there by 7.30pm! No where did it say we had to arrive by 7.30pm… so be warned. |2. The beds are so soft and really uncomfortable. |3. Restaurant gets fully booked if you don’t book in the morning for that evening. |4. They are building new pods for sleeping, whilst they look lovely there was a lot of building work going on whilst isn’t the calm and relaxed environment you want in Kangaroo Island.

Bay view room was dated. Extremely compact bathroom had oxidised mirror, hook missing from back of bathroom door, shower recess handle falling off, holes/plastic plugs in wall, fly screen dirty and lots of cobwebs, had to boil kettle in the bathroom because cord couldn’t reach power plug in wall and toilet looked 1980s. The staff were very friendly.

While the bathrooms need a makeover we had a good stay, it was clean and beautiful views from the Bayview room. Staff was very friendly and accommodating.
