Where to Stay in Melbourne During Your Visit (Updated 2025)

"I like Mercure Welcome as a budget-friendly option smack in the center of it all; as a reliable global chain, this location offers 330 tastefully furnished rooms with plus-sized beds, minibars, desks, and some rooms even have great city views." - Matthew Kepnes

I give them that the location is very central to eateries and most CBD attractions. You will have a good time with the cities’ free tram zone. The room power outlet was equipped with both usb-c and usb-a which is very handy. This is where the good things stop. My room 228 was dim and tiny. The window is next to roof ventilation units which means 24/7 buzzing noise. Half of the nozzles on the shower head was clogged. The water temperature would randomly swing from icy cold to burning hot without touching the faucet. Regular drilling noise would come through the floor during late night and early morning. This was the weirdest and worst room I stayed in Australia. It is usable but far from comfortable. I would not get paid to stay here…

Great location and the front desk staff were great. However for anyone coming to this hotel, just letting you know that they only make your bed and change your bedding every 3 days. The place including the halls and elevators need a good vacuum around the edges. There is a build up of dust. The breakfast was good and the older attendant was helpful.

The location is good, the breakfast ok and then everything else is very average.|The room is very small, the bathroom tiny with absolutely no shelf space. Lighting is poor throughout the room and especially the bathroom. The TV was 32 inches at best but on the plus side matched the small room as a decent sized TV would not have fitted. Very basic toiletries supplied. Would I return… definitely not!

Fantastic location. Close to everything. High standard of cleanliness. Great blockout blinds. Even though it’s right in the city it’s quiet for sleep. The staff have great customer service. They’re respectful, kind and helpful. I’d highly recommend this hotel to others!

The location was amazing, and the price was really good! I thought the room we had was quite large, and was clean with a comfy bed. But the walls were quite thin, and it was easy to hear other guests. Bathroom needed more space. Staff were very friendly and helpful.

A motel I once found as a little gem, now has left an irreversible taste in my mouth downhill. Firstly, we made a booking for a room with a queen bed and a single bed.. - on check in, and after given room key, we found we were given the wrong room. We went back and asked to change to the correct type of room. Both ladies at the counter seemed bothered by this request and said “they’d make a one time exception and move us”. Not our fault you gave us the wrong room. once we did get into our room properly, it just went downhill from here.. - The AC was not functioning properly and we were left uncomfortably warm during our whole stay, and of course there wasn’t any opportunity to get fr2/) air. - the room itself felt like a dungeon, it was cramped, dusty and extremely tiny. The only nice part of it was the bathroom (but even that had fatal issues). - The shower was actually broken. Completely. When you’d put on both hot and cold water like a normal person, it would boil you and not provide an optimal temperature. Even if the shower was strictly on cold, it still boiled. > we advised the reception and they “sent someone up” whom in turn was this grumpy middle aged man in a suit, definitely not the type of “handyman” we were expecting. > he spoke rudely and suggested we were dumb for not knowing how to turn it on, which we clearly do. This didn’t resolve our issue at all and instead was the final straw at the Mecure. Treat your guests properly, especially ones which have been loyal to you for nearly 2 decades. Fix your hot water / cold water system, I don’t want to get hurt trying to enjoy a basic need. The only positive was the TV provided some good movies and the beds were comfortable. Alongside being in the middle of the CBD and having access to everything in walking distance. This motel has gone very very much downhill and I’m beyond disappointed. I would recommend avoiding unless absolutely desperate.

Well located, but the most soulless and bare room I have ever stayed in - looking at a concrete wall 2m away. Basic and clean, but nothing like the photos or other Mecure hotels I've stayed in. If you're after a central location and don't care about the room, it's fine, but expensive for that level of comfort. Felt like a glorified backpackers right from the reception area - which is not a problem in itself (I've stayed at heaps) but for the price it was not up to scratch. Staff were friendly, but I will not be returning. Disappointing for a Mecure.

I recently stayed at the Mercure Melbourne in the heart of the city, and it was an excellent experience from start to finish. The location couldn’t be better—right in the middle of Melbourne, with shops, restaurants, public transport, and major attractions just steps away. The room was clean, comfortable, and well-maintained, with all the amenities you’d expect from a quality hotel. The bed was cosy, the Wi-Fi was fast, and I loved being able to walk straight out into the buzz of the city. The staff were welcoming, helpful, and professional, making check-in and check-out smooth and hassle-free. The breakfast buffet had a great variety of fresh options, and the dining area was bright and inviting.Overall, Mercure Melbourne is perfect for both business and leisure travellers who want convenience, comfort, and great service in the heart of the city. I would definitely stay here again.
