This is a review for the Mercy Hospital ER. I'm surprised to be writing this review. A little over a year ago, when I went to this ER with extreme stomach pain I was treated right away, told I was having appendicitis and scheduled for an emergency appendectomy. I overall had an awesome experience (well as awesome as having an emergency appendectomy can be). Because of this, when my husband had excruciating pain in his knee this past weekend (which was super concerning to us given he had a full hip replacement in the same leg less than 3 months ago), this was the place we chose to go.
From the start, I could tell this was not the experience that I had previously. One positive I will mention is that they have valet parking now (which they did not have when I was there last year) and will even grab you a wheel chair if needed and wheel you in. That's a nice touch that I can imagine being useful for folks who arrive by their own means. Other than that, this ER leaves a lot to be desired.
From the time my husband was brought into the back, we experienced rude nurses who for some reason had chosen not to believe him. They were condescending and short with us, acting as though we were wasting their time. Don't get me wrong, I understand that there are things in an ER that take precedence and my concern is not with the amount of time we had to wait or even had with the nurses. Instead, my concern is with the way the nurses treated us once they were in our room. The main nurse my husband had continued to question him and we could tell he didn't believe a word my husband was saying. Couple this with the fact that we spent 4 hours listening to this same nurse gossip outside of our room (we were right next to the nurse's station) and it was clear this nurse was more interested in what was going on in his own life (and all of his coworkers!) than his patients.
The reason this review is 2 stars instead of one is because of the doctor we had. If we only encountered this doctor, this would probably be a 3/4 star review. The doctor was awesome, prompt, caring and everything a doctor should be. Unfortunately, he just couldn't make up for the way we had already been treated and would continue to be treated.
After the doctor visited us for the first time, we overheard our nurse take him into the room next to us, question him about my husband and what the doctor thought - letting the doctor know that he didn't think our visit was something that required an ER visit. The doctor completely disagreed, but overall it was ridiculous that we could overhear this entire encounter.
Overall, if you can, I would recommend visiting a different ER over this one. It pains me to write this due to my previous positive experience, but it seems since then, this ER has gone downhill.
