Mérida, Mexico, Is a Favorite Travel Destination Among Locals — How to Visit

"The most convenient way to get to Mérida is to fly into Mérida International Airport (MID), which is close to downtown and offers a large number of direct domestic and international flights." - Meagan Drillinger Meagan Drillinger Meagan Drillinger left New York City for a life on the road. Mérida International Airport offers a surprisingly pleasant travel experience. The terminal is noticeably clean and feels modern with recent updates. Navigating immigration was a breeze, thanks to the short lines and the genuinely friendly and efficient personnel. Their welcoming attitude left a positive first impression of Yucatán. Overall, the airport provides a comfortable and stress-free start or end to any trip.

I finally figured how they steal our personal belongings at the Security point at Merida Aeroport. Followed closely how they operate. They work as a team. What they would like to have is separated for secondary inspection. Then they “ forget” to pass it forward to the passenger. When you ask for your belongings- you don’t get entire tray back, they would bring to you only requested item. For instance: I asked for my iPad and I got my iPad but not the whole tray with very expensive sun glasses. If I have asked for sunglasses they wouldn’t gave me IPad back. Anyways, I figured twice by now it’s an organized theft. Be aware.

Smallish airport. Security check is quick and efficient. Food Hall with a few dining options. Lady photos are of the lounge mentioned below. Only one Priority Pass lounge here when we traveled (Amex Platinum compatible), which is just after security on the right. Not listed on Google Maps and apparently not allowed to add places in this region yet, so I'm mentioning it here. Not a big lounge, minimal food (tiny sandwiches with little contents, chips, granola bars, etc). Bar area with a few free drink options.

Great experience... Shopping, transportation and different services. The rental car picked us up fast, we got the car very quickly.

Great improvement compared to the old airport. Lot of natural light. The layout and the outlets are much better. The only thing missing is the airport Business Class Lounge closed due to renovations. Immigration is slow but the staff are nice and friendly. Nice and clean airport. Lot of renovations going on at the moment

Great airport. Medium sized, fast and clean. So much better than CUN. There's not as many duty free shops. Easy security and immigration. Quick lines. Flights are on time.

It was our first time at this airport and I loved it. The airport is not so big but has all it needs. Mérida is worth to visit while you are in Mexico. Pros 1. Airlines check-in with no big queue. Everything went fast. 2. No queue in the airport security check. It was 11:30 in the morning. 3. It has several shops, restaurants, and cafes while you are waiting for your flight. 4. The toilet is clean. 5. They have charger point with Mexican plugs. 6. Wheelchair assistants are quite responsive. 7. They have painting exhibition from the departure gate.

Americans: Stay away from this place Ci Banco when trading your money. Trade it when you get back to the USA. I was trading pesos to dollars and they said they were trading at 21.60 peso for 1 dollar but were giving me less than that back in dollars. They don’t speak any English at all. When I used the translator to speak to them they made no sense in explaining this to me. I also showed them the converters online and how much more they were and they were trading at 20 peso per dollar but they still acted like the amount they gave us was correct. They said they don’t charge to do the money conversion, so if they are not charging then they are pocketing(stealing) the money, because it makes no sense why my mom and I were both cheated each by like $3-4 usd.

Yelp
We flew into and out of Merida this past week, and it's a pretty nice airport! Small-ish but with plenty of staff assisting at check in and immigration control. You can get a taxi or rental car very easily, but we had arranged to be picked up at the airport, which was very convenient and not too expensive since the airport is only 20 minutes or so from the heart of the city. I wish the airport had a few more food options and shops, but it had plenty of seating and was very comfortable. An airport I didn't mind at all!

Yelp
Very clean, modern and organized airport. Easy to navigate. Security checkpoint is usually pretty quick. Not a ton of lounges, but it's small. You really don't need to arrive here more than 90 minutes before domestic flights. There's a Johnny Rockets, of all chains. I can't speak for flying into here internationally or the airport wifi. I have only flown into/out of here within Mexico and have only used the wifi in the lounges. There are two terminals (A and B) so just make sure you don't find yourself waiting in line at the wrong security checkpoint. At least one of the lounges (AeroMexico) is BEFORE security so plan accordingly if you plan on using it.

Yelp
This is a small and efficient airport. I landed here as my final destination coming on vacation. Getting through customs and picking up my bag was no hassle at all. It took about 15 minutes, and I was out the door ready to start my vacation. On my way back to Los Angeles, I found the check in to be as hassle free as my experience landing here. The service rep looked over my documents, then directed me to security. Security took a very short time, and I was at the terminal in no time. The downsides to this airport: no place to charge your phone once you get through security, and minimal options as far as food and coffee. But... the folks here are super nice. And this city provided an outstanding experience overall. Five stars all the way.

Yelp
We as Americans are so accustomed to a poor experience at the airports and flying overall which is completely unnecessary so it's a treat when I get to fly to another country and experience their airports and services. Merida, Mexico is on the Western horn of Mexico. Cancun is on the Eastern side and there's about 3-4 hours driving distance between the two. Cancun is well Cancun. All inclusive resorts young people plenty of foreigners etc. Merida is not Cancun. It's a Colonial City founded by the Spanish and has influences from all over Europe including Gouda cheese. ( Yeah!!!) when you walk downtown through the many street vendors you'll see bright red balls of Gouda cheese. By I digress. Merida International Airport is serviced by only TWO US airports. Miami and Houston. You can't get there from another American city. Alternatively, you can get to Merida by first going to Mexico City from about 20 different US locations but directly in Merida it's either Houston or Miami. So with Houston it means that you're coming in on United and if you can from Miami most likely you're coming in on American Airlines. The terminal is decent size and very modern. Make sure prior to landing that you fill out the immigration papers. There are no desks or tables to fill them out when land and go down the maze of corridors. You won't be able to fill out these documents while going through the queue. The immigration officials will tell you in a strong tone to get out of line. So if your United or American Airlines gives you the immigration the moment you land. Fill it out completely before going down the maze corridors. Don't be that guy who is laid out on the floor filling out the form in front of the queue After immigrations. Go get your bags and go to customs where you'll press a button and play Red Light Green Light. Press the button. Green light means no checking of any of your suitcases and backpacks etc. Free to go Press the button. Red light means that all of your luggage, bags, backpacks, purses etc. goes through a scanner and then opened up and rifled through with the guy and his blue gloves. Your unmentionables will no longer be a Victoria's secret. Then it's through some more doors and now it's time to figure out how to get where you are going. A couple of notes. The coffee place in the lobby is freaking awesome and the bathrooms to the left are clean and ample but a gentle reminder don't put the toilet paper in the toilet. Outside is small really small. You'll feel like you're in Des Moines or Bakersfield or even Boise. There's some cool statues of things like a Jaguar and Dos Equis. There are over 5k Ubers in Merida. Uber is the way to go in Merida and I would highly recommend it. So go and enjoy Merida it's one of my favorite worldly destinations.

Yelp
Just landed in this airport to connect to my flight to Mexico City. Even though my time here has been short, every person I've met from immigrations and customs has been extremely friendly, which I appreciate since all I had to offer them was my broken spanish. I hadn't been off the plane more than 5 minutes and my luggage was already waiting for me at baggage claim. The airport seems small but very clean and there are several dining options around. They did make me throw my bottle of water away when I went through security again, oh well. One time for efficient airports! Gotta love them!

Yelp
I fly in and out of MID a few times a year and it's better than most other Mexican airports I've been to. It's a small airport with 2 terminals - very clean and not chaotic at all. There are a few restaurant/food options before security and the prices are reasonable when compared to the jacked up prices at most other airports. Immigration is usually pretty fast but customs can take a while as they sometimes only have one person screening passengers. Uber is not allowed to pick up passengers but the airport taxis are pretty reasonable

Yelp
At least the weather was a bit warm at 3am when we waited outside while the airport was CLOSED! Beware, this airport shuts down in the wee hours and everyone has to leave. There were three of us waiting: one whose flight was delayed, so decided to wait for the early transportation she was getting instead of bothering the relative at that hour; I had an early flight and got a ride, only to discover you cannot wait inside the airport due to closure, and there was a local man waiting for public transportation to start outside. Horrible!!

Yelp
The Merida airport is a medium-sized airport and surprisingly easy to maneuver, clean, cheeful, and bright. It is bustling during the day and very quiet and well-lit at night. I look forward to our return flight through here!

Yelp
That immigration guy was amazing! Fast! Not much food options in gate A. Bring some snacks. At least is a short flight to America!

Yelp
Claro Que Si. Nice, small regional airport, not too crowded, not too small. They have a booth outside to buy your tickect to take a taxi to downtown so try to bring some pesos with you. We flew Aeromexico and the people that check you in couldnt be more helpful.Reminded me of Burbank and Ontario when they first started.
