Another popular Singaporean sightseeing and photo op stop is the Merlion Park. The park was jammed with young locals as well as visitors whose excitement of viewing the mythical Merlion or lion-fish hybrid creature was electrifying. After passing the convenience store and snack vendors under the overpass, our guide first led us to a smaller Merlion statue AKA "Merlion cub" located in a lush and shady tree-laden part of the park. There, many people were seen relaxing on benches with their snacks, respectfully chatting among themselves, and enjoying the gorgeous sunny day.
The Merlion is recognized as Singapore's icon or symbol and is only one-year older than this country's independence as a Republic in 1965. The Merlion Park's 28-ft or 8.6-m tall statue and its cub sits near One Fullerton overlooking Marina Bay. This Merlion and its cub statues are the only ones of the six recognized Merlion statues scattered around Singapore that spout water and, in my opinion, boast the most commanding view of some of Singapore's most recognized and unique architecture. Also, at Merlion Park, while walking out to the platform for a city skyline view, we purposely stepped into the area where we could be misted by the refreshing water spray from the Merlion on this hot day. While others in our group avoided getting wet, they later wished they had gotten sprayed before sweltering and walking to the nearby Victoria Theater/Victoria Memorial Hall.
We enjoyed our visit to this park and always enjoy returning here.
