23 Best Things to Do When You're in Singapore | Condé Nast Traveler

"This promenade overlooking Marina Bay is home to Singapore's iconic 28-foot Merlion statue, a half-fish, half-lion stone carving that shoots water into the bay. The fish symbolizes Singapore's beginnings as a fishing village while the lion head is a nod to Singapura, which means "Lion City" in Malay. Erected in 1972, it remains one of the nation's most popular tourist attractions, so plan accordingly." - Ashlea Halpern

Google
Singapore's iconic spot. Very busy during the day. The views presented are stunning and even though it is busy you still get a beautiful view, just to sit quietly and enjoy the atmosphere. Walking Walking across the river and bridge looking from a distance is very beautiful.

Google
Amazing place to visit.... Mind blowing views in the night time with excellent light show. Excellent maintaining by the Singapore government hands off to this country for such and clean city.

Google
What a place to hang around. At night it is even more amazing all the flashing lights, the culture, the crowd definitely must be a place to visit to see the whole area. At the left most is the view of the esplanade at the very front is the iconic Marina Bay Sands, at the back is the OG that is the fullerton hotel and at the right is the whole Marina Bay area. I highly recommend coming here any time of the day, either way it is a beautiful place to tour around.

Google
We went around 5 in the afternoon and the volume of tourists was so high luckily we were able to find a spot for picture taking. A dream come true. Another bucket list checked. You may rent a bicycle nearby to roam around the area. Truly amazing.

Google
Merlion Park is home to the city’s most famous mascot, a half-lion, half-fish statue symbolizing Singapore’s history as a fishing village and its “lion city” name. The main Merlion stands at 8.6 meters tall, spouting water into Marina Bay, with the smaller “Merlion Cub” nearby. The location offers unobstructed views of Marina Bay Sands, Esplanade, and the city skyline, making it a prime spot for photos, especially at sunrise or night when the skyline is lit. It’s free to visit, but be prepared for crowds and tour groups. 📍 Best time to visit: Early morning or evening to avoid the midday heat. 💡 Tip: Combine your trip with a stroll along the bay to Esplanade or Marina Bay Sands for a full waterfront experience.

Google
Average tourist attraction for pictures, nothing special but you can make nice perspective photos. Make sure there's no ceremony going on (e.g. national day parade) as they might close the area around the statue. Very crowded most of the time.

Google
Singapore's symbol is very cute. The area has a good view. The air in the evening is quite nice. You can sit by the water and enjoy yourself.

Google
Great place to visit with kids Our kids loved it! We visited in the evening, and the lights on the water made everything feel magical. Plenty of space for strollers, and safe areas for children to walk around. We even grabbed some snacks nearby and had a small picnic. Clean, accessible, and perfect for a quick family outing with amazing photo op

Yelp
Great to see in person. It's very crowded but still worth it for a quick visit. Comes with great views of the city and the bay.

Yelp
I struggled a little to find this place since I didn't have Wi-Fi. When I got there it was crowded. So many people taking pictures. It was beautiful. I took some great pictures. It was really hot that day ,so it was a little hard for me to smile trying to take photos. Recommend taking umbrellas. Good luck

Yelp
If you're a first-timer in Singapore, you have to make sure you visit Merlion Park and see the statue of Merlion. Merlion is a half fish and half lion. It signifies Singapore's fishing village and a lion city. It is one of the major attractions in Singapore and every tourist always has this as one of their locations to visit. If you take the MRT, you have to disembark at Raffles Place. The locals are very friendly and you can ask them for directions going to this place. At night time, the Merlion is illuminated with colorful lights and has a nice view. Make sure you have Merlion on your bucket list whenever you visit Singapore

Yelp
Gayle and I wandered down here during the 2 day Chinese New Year Holiday. There were a lot of people here at this gathering place, which I say as a couple of large concrete promenades rather than a park. The center attraction of course was the iconic Merlion overlooking Marina Bay. This 28-foot statue/fountain is half-fish/half-lion and shoots water into the Bay. The fish symbolizes Singapore's beginnings as a fishing village while the lion head is a nod to Singapura, which means "Lion City" in Malay. We also took the Singapore River tour and saw the Merlion from the water side. I enjoyed that view more than at land side.

Yelp
Merlion at sunrise. Must see when in Singapore Get there early to avoid the crowd. Stay as long as you want. Or go there late at night
google avatar

Yelp
You know, we got here around 8:16 am on a Monday morning and it was still busy. However, it starts getting really crowded after 9:30 am especially with all of those big af tour groups. It's a beautiful area to take pictures with the famous half fish/half lion fountain and Marina Bay Sands in the background. It's a must for anyone's first time in Singapore. I read that it's also very crowded at night. So, if you want to skip out on the crowds, it's best to do it before 7 am or late at night. Bring a hat, sunglasses, and suntan lotion. They also have a good shop nearby that sells ice cream and cold drinks.
google avatar

Yelp
Perfect spot for pictures and scenery. Plenty of eats & drinks here and nearby. This is a MUST stop for anyone visiting Singapore. The water shooting out makes props for all kinds of funny pictures.
google avatar

Yelp
When people think about Singapore they think about this Merlion and it is a must to spot! Everyone and their mom are here. I would recommend coming here at night because the lights are quite pretty and yes you will be able to still see the merlion in your photos. Also, you should be patient since it seems like it gets quite busy at night time. Everyone seems to want to take a photo with the statue spitting water out. Some people do make pretty interesting and funny photos.

Yelp
Another popular Singaporean sightseeing and photo op stop is the Merlion Park. The park was jammed with young locals as well as visitors whose excitement of viewing the mythical Merlion or lion-fish hybrid creature was electrifying. After passing the convenience store and snack vendors under the overpass, our guide first led us to a smaller Merlion statue AKA "Merlion cub" located in a lush and shady tree-laden part of the park. There, many people were seen relaxing on benches with their snacks, respectfully chatting among themselves, and enjoying the gorgeous sunny day. The Merlion is recognized as Singapore's icon or symbol and is only one-year older than this country's independence as a Republic in 1965. The Merlion Park's 28-ft or 8.6-m tall statue and its cub sits near One Fullerton overlooking Marina Bay. This Merlion and its cub statues are the only ones of the six recognized Merlion statues scattered around Singapore that spout water and, in my opinion, boast the most commanding view of some of Singapore's most recognized and unique architecture. Also, at Merlion Park, while walking out to the platform for a city skyline view, we purposely stepped into the area where we could be misted by the refreshing water spray from the Merlion on this hot day. While others in our group avoided getting wet, they later wished they had gotten sprayed before sweltering and walking to the nearby Victoria Theater/Victoria Memorial Hall. We enjoyed our visit to this park and always enjoy returning here.

Yelp
Visited on August 2024 (my second time here as an adult). This place is a MUST for tourists - take lots and lots of pictures! And bring a hat, sunglasses, AND an umbrella. Unfortunately it was raining that day and I did not bring an umbrella. In addition to the famous Lion, you can also see the spectacular view of the Marina Bay Sands.
google avatar

Yelp
Singapore has several 'fly-by' tourist destinations. The Merlion statute and the park it's located in is certainly worthy of that designation. If you join a good tour, you'll get to see it and hear the history. Don't forget to take a few (funny) photos while you're there!

Yelp
Not really a park per say, but home to the iconic symbol of the city. This half fish body with a lion head statue is a famous Singapore landmark and a major tourist attraction. On a Sunday morning around 9 am this area is already pretty full of tourist trying to get their selfie with the almost 9 meter tall icon as he spouts water into the Singapore River. Keep walking around, ther are different areas to get good shots from. The platform on the water is the best. You can wait your turn at the railing and then no one can get between you and Merlion. He is currently sitting at the end of the One Fullerton Shopping Mall on the west side of the bay across from the Marina Bay Sands complex. Make sure you check out the mini Merlion behind him.

Yelp
Yellow route, stop #4 when using the hop on, hop off bus tours. One of the most famous and iconic things to see when visiting Singapore.

Yelp
Yelp Review 2023 #303: A nice little concrete park where you can see and take pictures of different landmarks of Singapore such as the Merlion (nothing screams SINGAPORE better than this), the nice hotels and skyscrapers around the park that's surrounded by Marina Bay. You can spend 10 minutes for a quick picture or an hour trying to pose ridiculously with your mouth hanging open - not flattering, just don't! You can come up with something more creative than that. Normally, I like to start my day real early and take pictures of landmarks and interesting things whenever I travel in order to beat the crowd. I went to Merlion Park late in the day because I was busy somewhere else but surprisingly, there weren't swarms of people when I got here. Since this is an open air park without any sun protection of some sort and the concrete absorbing the heat from the sun, it does get hot really hot here rather quickly. So, after snapping a couple pictures, I left. I mean, what else is there to do here? You go in to the Fullerton and enjoy the A/C while eating a Merlion-shaped popsicle. There's a lot of eateries a few steps from the Merlion. The location of this park is pretty central. Everything you need to visit in Singapore is within 20 minutes away from here. So, no matter where you're staying at, make it a point to come here.

Yelp
My husband and I took a tour of the central business district in Singapore. At the end of the tour, we ended up in Merlion Park with the iconic statue of the Merlion, a mythical half-lion, half fish. The Merlion's fish-half symbolizes Singapore's origins as a fishing village, known as Temasek. The head of the statue represents the city's original name of Singapura. The statue currently stands at 8.6 meters tall in front of the Fullerton Hotel and overlooks Marina Bay, it's home since 2002. As tourists, we naturally had to take photos in front of the Merlion statue. It's a lot bigger than you'd think. There is a mini one in the park that you can also take photos of. The park is free to everyone and it is a busy hubbub of activity during the late afternoon and evening. We took a bus to and from the business district that day and found the park easily accessible.

Yelp
So much fun to come watch the Merlion spouting water into Marina Bay. It's got the body of a fish with the head of a lion and is an iconic landmark in Singapore. It's easy to walk all around the park and the views are outstanding. It gets crowded so get there early.
google avatar

Liz S.

Yelp
A fun tourist attraction with great views of the Marina Bay Sands. It was pretty crowded on a Sunday at 12pm. Taylor Swift was also in Singapore at this time, so the extra tourism could've been from that.
google avatar

Susan B.

Yelp
A must see visit when visiting Singapore. Because this is a very popular tourists' spot, be prepared. There will be a lot of people trying to get pictures of it and with it. Be patient and enjoy the view around there. Nice to chill or take a walk. Definitely need to check it out during daytime and nighttime. Best of all, it is free!
google avatar

Nico Samneil S.

Yelp
Clean area. Organized and alot of restaurants surrounding the area. Lobby for drop-off for grab is also efficient
google avatar

Jacky C.

Yelp
A super crowded popular tourist attraction mainly to see the Merlion statue. You've probably seen all of the crazy photos ops I don't need to go through. Go on any social media apps to get an idea how you wanna pose with the statue. Come early if you don't want the crowd in your photos, otherwise there's absolutely no avoiding it. Unless you got the Google Pixel to magically erase the crowd.
google avatar

Bill K.

Yelp
A really cool place to check out! On the bay, next to good food and drinks. The view is amazing and the atmosphere is equally the same. A great place to take the family.
google avatar

Dominic T.

Yelp
It is a nice park which contains the statue of official mascot of Singapore which is merlion, which is a combination of lion head and fish body. It is first spot tourists come to when they visit Singapore and we did the same. Great spot to take pictures and if you want to go for a long walk you can walk around. Also great place to see the Marina bay hotel and Singapore CBD skyline.
google avatar

Rolly U.

Yelp
This was my first-time visiting Singapore and was told, I had to visit Merlion Park to see the famous Merlion. This is Singapore's mascot. It was very easy to find. They have lots of great areas to take a photo with this amazing fountain. Be sure to see the smaller one near it. They have lots of good little places to eat near the area, so I highly recommend to eat and then walk all the food off. The view of everything near is beautiful. The skyscraper is just so nice to look at while enjoying maybe some yummy ice cream. I highly recommend you add this to your list if your visiting Singapore for the first time.

Yelp
An excellent viewpoint of the harbor. Go early before the heat of day and crowds. It is a free viewing platform with interconnecting bridges to nearby parks.
google avatar

Ann Nicole A.

Yelp
Such a beautiful place! It is definitely a must to visit when you are in Singapore! I came right after the sunrise and with the Marina Bay Sands in the view, it was beautiful. It was also nice to witness when the merlion fountain started and people cheered. There were tourists already there taking pictures and locals working out. But not as crowded.
google avatar

Faye L.

Yelp
Such a busy place, and it's all so a tourist place too. All people comes from the world, we are all in here to take just one pic in front
google avatar

Peggy W.

Yelp
Nice place to walk around after eating a full meal. The Merlion, a must see in Singapore. Good place to laugh with friends as you try and take the stereotypical tourist photo with the water going into your mouth.
google avatar

Yelp
Mermaid and Lion. Half fish half lion statue is a welcome gate to Singapore River. It is a sign of good luck and protection. The word singa is lion. Which symbolizes the Singapore when they first discovered the land in the early day. Now the Merlion Park is major tourist attraction. It is great area to visit at day and night. At nighttime they have the laser light show can be seen towards the Marina Bay Sand hotel. The statue was move from the original location to current location. Many tourist put their hand up like catching the water or a head wash. Anyway you like. The park can be access through the Fullerton Hotel Tunnel if you try to cross Fullerton Road. There no crossing above. Just go to ground floor tunnel to cross from the hotel.
google avatar

Samson W.

Yelp
It is one of the must visit attractions in Singapore. Everyone come here to take a photo in front of statue. Again, it was a must see attractions if you are in Si
google avatar

Yelp
The National Symbol of Singapore FUN FACT from Wiki: Merlion is a statue that symbolizes the country of Singapore. It has the head of a lion and the body of a fish. Singapore's name originated from Singapura which means "lion city". The fish, on the other hand, symbolizes Singapore's humble beginnings as a fishing village. There are several Merlions in Singapore but there are two located in the Marina Bay, a major tourist attraction. For this reason, these two Merlions are the most popular ones plus the bigger one located in Sentosa. Expect a lot of tourists fighting for their chance to have a selfie or group pictures with the bigger Merlion sprouting water from its mouth. But as any other tourist or Yelper for that matter, you do what you got to do. Ready? Say cheese. Click!

Yelp
Entering my 5th year in Singapore, the Merlion - and its associated water views - never cease to captivate me. Singapore's mascot provides one of the best ground-level viewpoints of the MBS and ArtScience Museum (The lotus flower that looks more like a garlic bulb). The Merlion name is derived from "mer" meaning the sea, and "lion" the oft-regaled king of the jungle. The mer-body represents Singapore's origins as a fishing village; whilst the lion-head represents Singapore's original name - Singapura (Lion City). There are several Merlion to see in the park, but the large one closest to the water is the original that attracts all the attention, and supplies all of the photo opportunities. [Tourist Suggestion]: Once you've completed this part walk towards the Fullerton Bay Hotel and check out Clifford Pier. This is one of the locations of Mahatma Ghandi's ashes. There is a plaque with some information which tells more of the story --- go find it! ;)

Yelp
I got to go here on my trip back in 2019. This is a must see attraction in Singapore. This place gets crowded with tourists taking pictures and selfies during the day. We decided to visit this spot during the evening time which I find as the best time since there was no crowd.
google avatar

Dean N.

Yelp
The Merlion is the symbol of Singapore. Part myth. Part fantasy. All roar! This is another symbol that is synonymous to this country. Merlion Park is on the Bayfront. It is small and it is crowded. That said, it is a must to visit. You will be jockeying for a position to take a picture with the Merlion. Pose Capture Post. Your friends will be jealous.

Hank D.

Yelp
We had a good time at the park sight seeing and ate at a few different restaurants. Pls note you'll need a credit card to pay for just about everything.
google avatar

Linda T.

Yelp
The Merlion is one of the famous landmarks in Singapore. There will be PLENTY of other tourist taking selfies and photos of the Merlion. I was here both during the late morning and evening. BTW, it was super HOT & HUMID during the daytime here. Personally, visiting the Merlion during the evening is slightly better since you can catch the Spectra water show from a far distance and Marina Bay Sands light show at 8PM. The MRT isn't really close by the Merlion. I took the bus getting here and I think it's the best option. Overall, definitely visit the Merlion while in Singapore. You'll probably spend 15 - 30 minutes here.
google avatar

Hubert L.

Yelp
Beautiful view everything from the river with the boat a bunch of cooperate companies. It felt magical looking up at all the skyscraper.
google avatar

Krysten I.

Yelp
The merlion park is a definite must-do in Singapore. You can't not go to Singapore without seeing the merlion and the small park caters to tourists well. There are large stairs leading down to the water that make for excellent image composition strategy. There is also a little pier where you can get the best photos of he merlion. Obviously it's really busy here, but people come and go quite quickly, so you're bound to get a good shot if you're a little patient. There are so many poses I've seen using the streaming water from the merlion's mouth. Get creative lol. There are restaurants nearby that are expensive, but I think bringing your own food and eating in the small park or on the stairs would be doable.
google avatar

Vicky L.

Yelp
The merlion is a symbolic attraction in Singapore and on our bucket list of travel fun. The merlion had undergone some reconstruction and maintenance last year so we were glad that we were able to see it and capture photos. During the night, you will be able to capture the lights and even a show across the waters performed by Marina Bay Sands. The photo op is great and a lot of tourists will be taking the same photos you are and crowds don't dissipate until right before midnight. During the day, there are even more people and tour groups but all under the blazing sun. Photo op still there, but definitely much harder to do with eyes open and with no one blocking your camera view. There is a coffee shop and souvenir store nearby the statue and a lot of food options a few blocks away.
google avatar

Nat W.

Yelp
Some people say this is a tourist trap and disappointing but I found it worth going. You can see the lion, and beautiful Marina Baysands in the back. If it is not too busy you can take pictures without people obstructing the view. There is a boat goes around, and you can see the lion really well without the crowds. However they don't take credit cards so remember to bring cash if you wanna do the boat ride. The night show was rather disappointing so I wouldn't really recommend wasting your time waiting for the show.
google avatar

Melody C.

Yelp
The Merlion was under construction when I went in late January. I only found out when I got there (can you imagine the disappointment?!) but even so, the view more than made up for it. The Merlion is right next to the bay and across the bay you could see the Singapore flyer and Marina Bay sands. There's an area where you can go down the steps and touch the water. There's no fence or anything so be careful if you have kids! Behind the Merlion there was a smaller one (dog size) so a bunch of people was just crowded around that taking pics. The esplanade bridge and Jubilee bridge is right there so you can easily take one of those bridges then take the helix bridge to go to marina bay sands. The bridges are very short so The whole walk probably took under 30 minutes (with pictures along the way).
google avatar

Manish C.

Yelp
Merlion Park is a beautiful waterfront area of Singapore, with the main attraction being the merlion, which is the iconic symbol of Singapore. Although it's essentially a photo stop place hounded by tourists and selfie snappers, the backdrop of the city behind the merlion and the view across the river to Marina Bay Sands are worth a stop here.
google avatar

Kemlyn B.

Yelp
The Merlion is the unofficial mascot of Singapore. Singapore or Singapura is named after a mythological lion. The Merlion is half lion, half fish. Visit the original statue/fountain at Merlion Park. The lion head spews out water into the Kallang River. Visitors can take pictures with the iconic Merlion by day or night. I love the park best at night because it is lit beautifully. Sometimes, it can get really crowded, but it is lovely to be by the riverfront and see the lights from boats and the gorgeous Singapore skyline!
google avatar

Kellie R.

Yelp
This is obviously a must do when visiting Singapore for the first time. Whether or not you think it's touristy, there's history here. I recommend visiting at night and watching the light show from across the water at The Sands. It can be a little crowded here but it's a cute place!
google avatar

Ideru C.

Yelp
A place where you can enjoy the view of some famous spot in Singapore. Lots of cafe surrounding it. Too many tourist :)
google avatar

Karen L.

Yelp
A nice stroll from the Asian Civilisations Museum to here. But there's no shade, so it got so hot. However, the Merlion is one statue that must be seen when traveling to Singapore. How couldn't you? It's so iconic. Spend some time trying to get the perfect picture with the stream of water. Get some perfect views of the buildings and the Marina Bay Sands hotel across as well.
google avatar

Julie B.

Yelp
The location of the Merlion is in an excellent spot. You can have the Merlion statue, The Sands, the Lotus all in one photo. It does get crowded through the day so it is best to go there either early morning or in the evening around 2000-2100 hours. You also have a great view at night when the Sands does its nightly light show. The only drawback to watching the light show on the Merlion side is that you won't be able to hear the music well. Happy travels everyone.
google avatar

Chris L.

Yelp
Lots of people and great people watching. We took a lot of fun photos with the fountain and then went on the $25 boat cruise afterwards (well worth it). It gave a history of Singapore and unforgettable views of the bay and canals. I would definitely recommend this to every visitor. This place is a must!
google avatar

Ellie J.

Yelp
Merlion Park, is a Singapore landmark and major tourist attraction. It is a mythical creature with a lion's head and the body of a fish that is widely used as a mascot and national personification of Singapore. It is located in the park at waterside, surrounded with many restaurants and cafes. It can get very crowded. Its better to visit early in the morning. Such a iconic spot in singapore. I didn't spend much time here. Just spent a little time to stroll the waterside and take pictures. Entrance is free, have nice public restroom areas too. Recommended!!
