While searching yelp for a restaurant with that makes a particular dish, I stumbled across Mesa Azteca. The photos of nachos caught my eye and I made a mental note to give them a try at another time. That other time came this past Friday night.
What makes their nachos special? Each tortilla chip is shown love. Instead of a heap of chips with ingredients scattered all over, individual tortilla chips are layered with ingredients. As a lifelong New Yorker it took me back to Caliente Cab Co., which was one of many after work go-to spots for me and my girlfriends in the 90s. We ordered plate after plate of nachos, if nothing else, aside from alcohol lol.
Anyway, the picky teenage girl and I ordered plain cheese, steak, and shrimp nachos, with a side of guacamole. The nachos come with guacamole and jalapeños on the side, but we really really really really really like guacamole, and their guacamole was really really really good. While some may complain about the number of nachos, as I explained people are used to these heaping piles of nacho with stuff piled on top, Mesa Azteca gives you about eight per serving.
Everything was really fresh and flavorful. The steak was a little smoky, tender and well seasoned, not salty. The shrimp nachos were very fresh and delicious. I don't eat fast enough so I missed out on the plane cheese, but Miss Picky said they were really really good. Coming from her, that's a complete complement and beyond her usual teenage lackluster responses to mostly everything. That's enough to say that the nachos were exceptional.
Mesa Azteca has more for us to explore, but it is our nacho go-to.
