How to Get the Most Out of a Private Yacht Charter in Croatia, According to a Top Travel Advisor

"Soak up Split’s fascinating heritage and rich culture, especially when you have behind-the-scenes access to its museums and galleries. For example, you can tour the Ivan Meštrović Gallery with the curator and enjoy VIP access to the works of one of Croatia's most celebrated artists." - Emmanuel Burgio

"Ivan Meštrović was undoubtedly Croatia’s greatest sculptor. In 1952, he donated his magnificent summer residence located in the foothills of Marjan Forest Park to the state, along with many of his works. Located a mere 20-minute walk from Riva, the collection includes some 190 sculptures, along with 900 drawings, paintings and architectural plans."

Lovely garden and sculptures. Unfortunately the building is being renovated so you can’t enter the building. But tickets were half price, and included entry to the church just down the road. The sculptures were well worth a look.

Nice decent price unfortunately a lot of the gallery was closed when we visited but the tickets were discounted. Spacious and tranquil, really helpful and friendly staff who directed us to the church down the road which had a beautiful coastal view. And nice toilet’s probably some of the best in Split.

An interesting building with a small garden populated with some of the artist"s bronze sculptures. The staff were up front about the fact that the building was closed for renovations meaning most of the exhibits were unavailable, and the price was discounted accordingly. The ticket also includes the former church a little further along the road. Watch out for the cute little tortoises in the garden

The gallery was closed because of the renovation. Only the garden and Chapel were open fir visitors. I really enjoyed the sculptures in the garden.

The house was closed for renovation when we went, but the garden was good enough as it was half price and there were statues and garden tortoises! A nice place to enjoy the shade and a coffee before striking out to the forest or a beach

The Meštrović Gallery is honestly one of my top 10 museums in the world. And that says a lot — I’ve visited places like MoMA, the Musée d’Orsay, the Louvre… But in this case, I can’t really be objective, because I’m from this region and I know Meštrović’s work quite well. I truly admire the way he shaped emotion into stone — his art is spread across the entire former Yugoslavia. In fact, one of the most iconic symbols of Belgrade is his creation. I also highly recommend visiting his mausoleum (Mavrović family tomb) located in the Croatian countryside — a peaceful and powerful place that completes the picture of his legacy.

Unfortunately, this visit was a letdown. The main gallery was completely closed, which we weren’t made aware of until arrival. They did offer a 50% discount, but even at that price, the experience didn’t justify the trip. What was open consisted of a handful of bronze statues in the garden—five, to be exact—and while they were beautifully crafted, it felt more like a teaser than a true exhibit. We made the short walk to the nearby church that’s part of the grounds, hoping for more, but it too was sparse and underwhelming. Between the uphill walk (or the cab ride if you’re coming from town), the limited access, and the lack of any real context or experience once you arrive, it’s hard to recommend a visit while the gallery remains closed. I imagine the full experience could be quite special when everything is open, but for now, it’s not worth the time or effort.

What a great experience, even during a storm. We walked up the hill, via Riva and the sea front, which on a a sunny day may be too taxing for some (take water or a taxi maybe). The grounds had some lovely pieces, and a real tortoise! We climbed the steps and enjoyed seeing more sculptures inside, as well as the rooms and a video about Mestrovic (one clip included him at work). The building itself is worth viewing from outside for the entrance alone. At the admission desk we were also told about the church over the road (about 10 more minutes walk). This was very tranquil. The wood panelling as well as views to the sea from the church made it worth the extra walk. If you have a Split card admission is half price. I do not believe there were toilets or a cafe on site.
