I'm very grateful for Metro Diner. I've been going there, and ordering from them for years. The quality of the food is reliably good, there's something for everyone on the menu, and it's one of the few good diners left on the UWS.
I find it comfortable to eat there with friends as there's plenty of room and the servers don't rush you. Service is classic NY diner: they're not warm and fuzzy, but there's always someone close by to help, and they do a good, professional job. You'll get your food hot, without a long wait, your coffee and water will be refilled, and if there's a problem they'll address it. The place runs well.
It's also great for delivery, and Ive always ordered from them directly, which I recommend. They're reasonably fast, even very fast if it's not during lunch or dinner rush, and in decades of ordering from them, there have been only one or two small errors.
Very good burgers, yummy matzah ball soup, fresh fish, fresh vegetables, nice salads (I'm partial to the Fields of Dreams salad with grilled salmon), delicious roast chicken with stuffing, pork chops, milk shakes ... those are the kinds of foods I eat at Metro Diner, and I'm always quite pleased. Good sized portions, too.
They very recently launched their own online ordering system on their website. There are a few kinks to work out -- I've had to call to find out things like options for sides on a dinner entrée, and if you check out an item, when you return to the menu, it brings you back to the top instead of to where you were (considering what a large selection they have, that gets to be a drag). It's new, and I'm sure they'll work that out. Anyway, I MUCH prefer to go directly through the restaurant.
Hats off to the Metro Diner. They're an asset to the Upper West Side.
