Where to Stay in Christchurch When You Visit (Updated 2025)

"I found this utilitarian, budget‑friendly motel to be one of the cheapest options in the area; apartment‑style rooms are modern and well‑maintained with comfy beds, kitchenettes and flat‑screen TVs, and there’s a barbecue area, free parking, and an owner who’s super friendly and focused on hospitality." - Matthew Kepnes

The bed in this room was King sized with memory foam on the mattress and the most comfortable sheets I've found anywhere! The rest of the room was perfectly serviceable. Only complaint was getting our cash deposit back in the morning took like 20 minutes while the front desk agent inspected the room and we waited uselessly in the lobby.

We've stayed in this hotel 2 years now, we usually stay during the FanX convention. First year wasn't awful, the room was decently clean, but this year. We settled in, there are hard laminate wood floors in the room we were in, but me and my husband woke up the next morning...bed bugs. And a $100 deposit???? It might be a good price for a room, but at the cost of terrible service, uncommunicated fees, and bed bugs. Do not book your next hotel here.

I was booked to stay here 6 nights but checked out the next day because this isn’t a place I’d want to be based out of for more than a night or two. Here are the reasons. Pros: Clean crisp bed linens and towels. Staff at the counter are accommodating and they did try their best to help with my queries. Fairly quiet location and 3-4 blocks from downtown and convention facilities. Cons: Clearly a budget option so soap/shampoo etc are all in sachets. The doors feel flimsy so I didn’t feel comfortable as a solo traveler for a long stay. Amenities and facilities are very dated and old. Overall: Ok for 1-2 nights. I booked through trip.com who said it’s non refundable but the property refunded me for the nights I didn’t stay so they’re a very decent lots. Staying here led me to a hidden gem across the road, The Little America Hotel which cost a little more. I checked in there the next day and really enjoyed my stay. Read my review separately

No breakfast!! The only reason I give this more than a one star are; 1. The front desk gentleman was very nice and helpful. 2. The water pressure was great!! We had been out camping and were just passing through and wanted a shower so I might be a little bias on the water pressure part. I’m all for low class stuff at a decent price, but I wouldn’t stay here again. Room was not very clean, the bedding was clean is the only part that kept us in the room and wanting a shower, the whole camping part comes into play again. The bed frame about disabled me, it was a king bed but the metal brackets on the frame on the ends and in the middle sticks out 2 inches or so. I hit my foot on it a few times. You also have to give a $100 deposit when you check in, which they wanted in cash if possible. Which was ok but then in the morning, they had someone go check the room before I could get it back, just too weird for me. But the front desk guy was super nice and very helpful. He was great! The shower tiles were missing most of the grout and the tiles were very cracked.

This is not the gem touted in the property description. Breakfast is not offered due to COVID-19 policy still in effect, rooms are in desperate need of update and/or refresh, including the beds, which I nearly fell off of on one side due to no support under it, receipts are not provided, even when requested, and I have no clue when my deposit will be returned. Yes, it is relatively close to the downtown area but spend the money someplace else.

Positive: Within walking distance of my last location Negative: TV remote did not work. Carpet was wet in front of refrigerator. They turned the water off right after I got to my room and never even made a courtesy call to notify me. I had to go to the desk to find out what was going on.

Do not stay at this hotel. The rooms are disgustingly dirty. The elevator doors don't close and it is not safe. They require a $100 cash deposit. They check your room before you can check out. They charged me $30 for a towel they said could not be cleaned. I used the towel to clean up the bathroom floor, which looked like it had not been cleaned in quite awhile. The outlets in the room are old and dangerous. Book at your own risk.

We booked a room with a King bed, for the sole purpose of taking advantage since we have a Queen bed at home. When we checked in, they did not inform us that they had changed our reservation to a double Queen bed. I went in to tell the front desk that it was not what we had reserved and all the guy said was "we ran out of King rooms, so we changed it to a double Queen. You can just sleep on one bed, you don't have to use the other one." Well, that wasn't the point and had I known that at the start, I would have requested a refund. |Also, make sure you keep your receipt for your deposit back (which is ONLY cash, by the way). The gal that checked us in DID NOT tell us to keep it, but luckily, we did! Otherwise, they wouldn't have given us our $100 back. Super sketchy if you ask me. |Poor communication all around. Would NOT recommend or stay here EVER again!!!
