Mhor 84 Motel, Balquhidder, Trossachs National Park, Scotland - Explore & Book

"Great news: Mhor is more. The clutch of foodie enterprises run under the Mhor name by the ever-energetic Tom and Dick Lewis and their wives Lisa and Mhairi, has a younger sibling. Mhor 84 is a relaxed, small, no-frills roadside ‘motel’ (on the A84, hence the name) that serves as Balquhidder's boozer, walkers’ tea room, community hub and great food destination. 2 miles from the centre of the village, it's the antithesis of anonymous roadside travel lodges, and a cheap-and-chic alternative to the secluded luxury of Monachyle Mhor (the Lewis’s hotel at the end of the glen). The transformation of the tired tartan-carpeted Kings Head inn that’s stood here for 300 years has been so dramatic that locals are still reaching for their whiskies in disbelief. It was revamped in just 5 busy weeks on a shoestring budget, but with the inimitable Lewis flair. White paint replaced coloured wallpapers, producing a bright contemporary feel, while vintage china and deer antler chandeliers give a stylish touch and woodburners make it feel like home. Upstairs are 7 simple ensuite bedrooms, most with mountain views, out back are a couple more rooms and a family-sized cottage. Cyclists and walkers on the Rob Roy Way, business travellers and holidaymakers wanting a stop-off will all love it. Highs You're in the heart of Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park - heaven for hiking, cycling, mountain climbing and fishing Stylish in a relaxed shabby-chic way, and fantastic valueTasty food: Tom and Mhairi both run other restaurants and really know about sourcing the best local ingredients The atmosphere - everyone feels truly welcomed here and it would be hard to find friendlier staff You can't get much more remote in the UK, yet it’s only an hour's drive from Glasgow and Edinburgh (and there's a large car park so no stress as you arrive) Lows The rooms are basic and some find their bare white walls and junkshop furniture too spartan, but they’re priced accordinglyFull pre-payment due on reservationThe white Venetian blinds in the bedrooms, while pretty, don’t keep out the light very well. In summer this could be a problem so pack an eyemaskBathrooms are yet to be refurbed so are rather datedRooms are over the bar so you may hear chatter, plus live music at the weekends (and lorries hurtling along the A84), but hey, this is an inn, and the double glazing keeps out most of the road noise" - Clare Hargreaves

We had an unforgettable meal at Mhor 84, a charming and cozy spot nestled in the beautiful Scottish Highlands. The location itself is stunning — surrounded by rolling hills, open countryside, and that peaceful Highland atmosphere that makes you want to slow down and stay awhile. The place has a warm, welcoming vibe with a touch of rustic elegance. It’s the kind of spot where you immediately feel comfortable, whether you’re just stopping in or making a special trip. I ordered the steak pie, which was absolutely delicious — tender, flavorful, and comforting, with a perfect pastry crust. Every bite was a true taste of hearty Scottish comfort food. The staff were very kind and attentive, making the whole experience even more enjoyable. If you’re exploring the Highlands, Mhor 84 is a must-visit — a perfect combination of great food, warm hospitality, and breathtaking surroundings.

Fantastic hotel/pub/eatery in a beautiful location. Room was spotlessly clean, the staff were welcoming and everything was run very smoothly. Dog friendly and good selection of drinks. Food was delicious and had a great wee break. Will definitely return.

Stopped off for lunch on way North. Nicely situated place for food. Ordered a burger and chips (very good) and lobster mac and cheese (excellent). Dog friendly too!

Stopped for lunch on the way back from holiday. I've been in many times before and stayed at both hotels a few times - excellent experiences every single time. Had loaded sourdoughs on this occasion. One pastrami and one beetroot. Superb quality and taste.

We did this as part of a stop on a hairy coo coach and we were so glad we did. The service was spot on and the food was delicious. I had the Haggis meal and my wife, the highly recommended steak pie which were both lovely. Quick turnaround, well priced and we now know of a new place to go out to!

I can honestly say this place has ruined mussels for me in the best way possible! They were simply the best I’ve ever had, and that includes trips through France and Belgium. Perfectly cooked, melt-in-your-mouth, with a sauce that was just spot on. The staff were also so lovely and attentive, which made the whole experience even better. Truly unforgettable!

We stayed 3 nights and, because we had dogs travelling with us, we were put in one of the cottages at the rear of the hotel. I would describe the overall ambience as quirky - perhaps a little too much effort has been made to create something offbeat. Staff were generally friendly and helpful. On the first night there was live music - a harpist/ singer - which was a pleasant bonus.||Our room was one of 4 in the cottage at the rear of the motel with parking right outside - it was clean, the bed large and very comfortable and the bathroom OK but it was very small and noisy. There was no floor space for the dog beds or to store suitcases other than closing them (the suitcases!) up and stuffing them under the bedside tables. The doors could not be closed quietly and the partitions between rooms insufficiently sound proofed so you could hear other guests talking and moving around. We had the misfortune on the first two nights of having kids in the other rooms while their parents were in another cottage and the kids kept going between rooms until 2.00am, slamming the doors each time.||The food was better than average although I would say the main "all day" menu was "pub grub" supplemented by more refined specials. However, the daily specials were, bar one change, the same on each of the three nights which was disappointing. Breakfasts were great.||When booking we found a dearth of hotels in the area other than some high end country retreats. Consequently the prices for accommodation and food were fairly steep reflecting the lack of competition.

Yelp
I had a delicious zucchini soup with their house made sourdough bread. They have a lot of fresh made baked goods that I wish I could have tried. Staff was very nice and friendly. This place is the middle of nowhere and prolly an ideal stop for lunch. We stopped here on a biking tour.

Yelp
Had an amazing little breakfast here on our way to the highlands. Who would have thought something as simple as toast and jam could be so delightful?! The bread was clearly freshly made and toasted to perfection. We also had a sausage and fried egg roll which was perfect with two big sausages. Hearty enough of a meal to keep us going in the highlands for hours! I only wish we had more time to spend in the area so we could have tried more of their food.

Yelp
Wonderfully friendly people who helped us out in a jam when we had car trouble at Rob Roy's grave. They were patient, helpful, and friendly. Wish the tow truck was slower so we could have savored dinner longer. What an oasis in our time of need

Yelp
This was my second trip to Mhor 84 which - a homely hipster heaven on the way to the Highlands. Part of a lovely like collection including Mhor Bakery, Mhonacyle Mhor, Mhor Farm and others, there is something very special about the shabby chic, hip but welcoming vibe cultivated by this special group. Set in spectacular scenery and only an hour and 20 minutes from Glasgow, the motel itself has lovely outdoor seating, access to a fantastic bike trail, a bar and restaurant, games room with pool table, lounge -with live folk music on a Thursday- and hosts a music festival every May. The customer service is really relaxed buy efficient - one thing to be aware of is that there aren't mini fridges in the rooms so if you need milk you must request a vacuum flask of it at reception. Every room is different but with a distinct 70s vibe- think avocado bathroom suites and peach marble wet wall! The rooms are minimal and comfortable, but the real jewel of this retreat is the restaurant. The food is genuinely excellent- you can book a table when you check in- and breakfast is served all day too. This time around for dinner I had scallops which were huge and delicious, followed by a ludicrously large and tasty McSweens haggis burger with chips and finished with a luxurious sticky toffee pudding served with salted caramel and ginger ice cream. We were fortunate to be staying on a Thursday and loved the folk music in the lounge- it's acoustic so quite unobtrusive but a perfect background to your Scottish escape! Check out is a nice late time off 11 and breakfast is all day from 8am. For breakfast I had tomatoes on sourdough with a beautiful zingy vinaigrette paired with a really lovely cup of tea. We will be back again as soon as well can.

Yelp
I'll do all the good stuff first then a couple of (tiny) niggles just so they don't get too big an ego. The general vibe in this place is incredibly relaxed and friendly. The staff were polite, friendly and knew their jobs pretty darn well. It's an old hotel from the 17 or 1800's which has been whitewashed inside and out to freshen it up then had some "shabby chic" fairy dust sprinkled liberally around. The rooms are basic (ie no fridge or DVD player, mostly ikea furniture) but clean and tidy nonetheless. This isn't really the sort of place where you come to luxuriate in the rooms themselves......it's all about the food. The food is just......immensely good, and pretty reasonable too. We ate there for breakfast, lunch AND dinner, if was so good. The fish and chips was the only slight disappointment, but the bar is set pretty high by Mohr Fish (owned and operated by the same folks which is why we were surprised that it wasn't quite up to scratch here). The only small criticisms were that our room was above the entertainment area downstairs and.....it wasn't the quietest of areas (although the staff did turn off the jukebox when we asked as it was incredibly loud) and also the music in the lounge/bar area was just.....terrible. The first night it was a lame "Ibiza lite" house CD with parping trumpet solos galore, the second night it was Dire Straits "Best Of" both of which were just left on a loop. Not great. I'm still giving it a five star review because generally all the staff were exceptionally nice and very good at their jobs, the food was mostly stunning and the vibe in the place is SO relaxing and cool.

Yelp
The bar maids are so nice and the food is unreal it's hard to believe this isn't already on Yelp! Five star dining at a three star price. All of the food has been incredible, but the pidgeon, black pudding and bread and butter pudding, the blat were highlights. Oh. And the lager!
