Where to Eat, Drink, and Stay in Oaxaca, Mexico

"Run by Juana Hernandez, this casual roadside restaurant is renowned for its extraordinary tortillas—super soft and fluffy—and for deeply layered moles, including a house mole negro made by toasting and charring a wide array of ingredients (onions, tomatoes, garlic, bread, tortilla, bananas, chocolate, sesame seeds) on the comal before grinding and simmering to taste; the owner teaches traditional technique hands-on and emphasizes intuition in seasoning and timing." - Dana Bowen

Truly one of the most remarkable dining experiences I’ve ever had. Juanita and Ovidio were incredibly warm and welcoming, it felt like we were at home. The authentic Oaxacan food was so fresh and flavorful, and the black mole was better than what you will find at the finest restaurants in Oaxaca city center. This unique restaurant is absolutely worth the trip if you are in and around Oaxaca. Thank you!

Absolutely phenomenal food, service, ambience, everything. Probably my favorite dining experience in Oaxaca. If you actually like and care about food, especially local food and ingredients, it is a 100% worth a trip from Oaxaca. Far better than anything else, especially all the “nicer” establishments in Oaxaca city.

Was a guest of the family and helped prepare delicious food. Restaurant should be outstanding for trying traditional regional dishes.

This was like going to someone's house for dinner. ..except I don't know anyone who makes food like that. Exquisite.

I recently attended Juana's mole cooking class in Oaxaca and it was an absolutely amazing experience. While we only learned how to make one mole, we had the opportunity to taste 7 different types of mole that Juana had prepared. Each one was bursting with flavor and rivaled those found in Michelin-star restaurants. The class was very informative and Juana did an excellent job explaining the history and traditions behind mole. It was by far the best culinary experience we had during our trip to Oaxaca and I highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area. Juana is a true master of mole and her passion for traditional Mexican cuisine really shines through in her teaching. Thank you Juana for an unforgettable experience!
